The Boll logistics group of Meppen, Germany is currently testing Lower Saxony, 25 meter trucks. A goal of the pilot project is it to test the feasibility of the lengthy trucks over determined distances. All results will be forwarded to the Federal Institution for roads for final appraisal.

With the help of the 25 meter truck program, road loads can be reduced, increased load volume will be realized and emissions reduced significantly. The 25.25 meters long double train with attached central axled rear trailer has a permissible total weight limit of 40 tons and is in regular transport duty today (terminal to terminal). A substantial increase in utility of the truck/train is made possible by the increased load volume of 150 cubic meters instead of the standard 100 cubic meters.
The modular concept uses the Motorwagen Dolly semitrailer apart from the articulated towing vehicle semitrailer tandem trailers. The compatibility of the trailer components makes this solution a better one then the regular transport solutions with simpler distribution at the final destination. A tandem trailer can be uncoupled quickly from the semitrailer reports Boll as just one of the advantages of this concept. Given that each component itself is again combinable, companies may find this concept particularly suitable to their needs. The 25 meter full trailer combination needs a 52 meter vs. 34 meter parking bay but hauls approximately 54% more freight weight. Entrepreneur Boll says the economic reasons are two-fold. Today we drive the Meppen/ Duisburg route once per night using three trucks. With the use of the 25 meter trucks, we could make due with just two. In just one year, we could have already saved the cost of the second trailer(s). We have plans for six lines of approximately 750 trucks. The vehicles would predominantly use motorways and federal highways at night in order to avoid impairment of normal traffic. The modular concept currently exceeds the length restrictions of German roads with a maximum permissible overall length of 18.75 meters. The enterprise requests special permission for the Meppen to Hanover to Magedeburg and Meppen to Duisburg routes. Such innovative commercial motor vehicle concepts with longer trucks can be an important contribution to both economic and ecologically favorable utilization of cargo hauling. With regards to road safety, the enterprise is in a pioneering role. The enterprise drivers in close co-operation with the DEULA Freren are specially trained to drive the lengthy trucks with training in a specialized program. Besides braking tests on wet and dry roads, testing of the handling characteristics on roundabouts and in tight curves is part of the training program.
