View Full Version : New Tank Record! 3536 miles 314MPG in a Prius II PHEV
TheForce 07-12-2010, 12:02 PM Once again Hybridfest has forced me to fill up early. But not by much this time.
Today I have set a new distance record on my 2006 Prius Plug In. 3536.4 miles and 313.51MPG. This tank started out on February 6th and ended today July 12th. I had about 5% fuel remaining according the the CAN-View. At the rate I was going I could have driven about another 50-100 miles. This tank was about 99% my commute to work and back.
Here are some stats.
Distance: 3536.4
Calculated MPG: 313.51
MPG Equivalent: 115.43MPGe
Gallons gas used: 11.280 @ $2.779
Watt hours used: 650379.9 @ 8 cents per kWh
Watt hours per mile: 183.91
Total tank cost: $83.38
Cents per mile: 2.4
Here are some pictures.

Sorry no CAN-View or Scan Gauge pictures because at these high numbers the CV and SG are so far off on accuracy it not even worth mentioning.
According to the Scan Gauge my daily trips resulted in about 500-600MPG. I feel that a 4000 mile tank is doable. A 5000 mile tank is possible and 6000 mile tank it just with in reach but would take a lot of work. The only way I would be able to reach anything above 4000 miles a tank is to not go on any long trips between March and November.
DIGG IT!! http://digg.com/autos/314MPG_3536_miles_one_a_tank_of_gas_in_a_Prius_II_PHEV
RobertSmalls 07-12-2010, 12:27 PM Congratulations on having nearly kicked the oil habit.
Right Lane Cruiser 07-12-2010, 01:04 PM Very nice, Jay!!! Your MPGe is knocking mighty close to my max tank average, too.
PaleMelanesian 07-12-2010, 01:51 PM Very nice! It shows that, at least on a cost-equivalent basis, electric is more efficient than hybrid.
And here I thought my 1114 miles was great. :o
Hi Jay:
Congrats and at this rate, you will be testing out gasoline longevity long before the Volt and Prius PHEV arrive :)
Good Luck

I've seen E10 last at least 9 months. Congratulations and with numbers like that plug ins start to look feasible to the average owner.
aburk4 07-12-2010, 06:32 PM That's pretty damn good! ;)
TheForce 07-12-2010, 08:40 PM Very nice, Jay!!! Your MPGe is knocking mighty close to my max tank average, too.
Yeah when you calculate out the equivalent MPG the Prius seems to top out a little over 100MPG.

Yeah I don't think I will have a problem with bad gas unless I can find a way to go pure electric all the time.
Ophbalance 07-12-2010, 10:27 PM Man, that's brave... I cannot seem to even attempt to go beyond 10 to 10.15 gallons used in my non plug-in Prius. I just don't know if I'll ever see it hit 11 gallons used, but it's nice to know it (might) be there if I need it.

Just remember our Prius has a bladder and it stretches. I filled up when it was cold in February and I filled up again when it was about 85F outside. My guess is that this should have been about a 10.28 gallon fill instead of a 11.28 gallon fill based of previous tanks.
smart-za 07-13-2010, 03:34 AM Amazing result - thanks especially for the MPGe number.
As a next step, how about ripping out the engine, selling it for spares, and using the proceeds to buy some nice long distance bus tickets?

Indeed. That's why I've taken to only driving as many gallons as I know I filled up previously. ;)
LinuxGold 07-13-2010, 08:24 AM :woot: Way to go!!! Good Job!
Damionk 07-13-2010, 12:35 PM You know you are a hypermiler when you change your oil more often than fill the tank.:D
:woot:
hyperme 07-13-2010, 07:57 PM Wow! Suddenly I feel so inadequate.

So you have......................... Prius Envy??
aburk4 07-13-2010, 09:50 PM So you have......................... Prius Envy??
:biglol:
Nice.
SD3_Driver 07-13-2010, 10:21 PM i'm jealous... barely get 350miles from my tank.....
Chuck 07-13-2010, 11:07 PM So you have......................... Prius Envy??I use a 2000 Enzyte for my enhancement. ;)
Seriously, those are numbers that many of us would dream of over two tanks!
Right Lane Cruiser 07-13-2010, 11:30 PM Yeah, I can't match that with my two best tanks stacked together!
hyperme 07-14-2010, 04:18 AM So you have......................... Prius Envy??
That, my friend, was pretty clever.;)
JusBringIt 07-14-2010, 06:41 AM My car doesn't even see 314mpg on the instantaneous readout :o
phoebeisis 07-14-2010, 07:27 AM Crude guess is you use about 250 watts per mile on pure electric- is that about right?
I guessed you get 80 mpg on gas-but maybe that is too low a guess on pure gasoline?
I'm trying to guess what an electric car- like the Leaf or Volt(sorta')-will actually get with a very adept driver. I'm guessing an average driver can get 1/2 the distance. 500 watts per mile had better be wrong(5 cents/mile). I'm guessing a Leaf will be more efficient on all electric than a Prius, but probably not more than 10-20 % more.
The Leaf will have big problems if it sells for the same $$ as a extended range Prius.
The Prius is tough to beat.

And it looks like he was getting ~60 mpg before the conversion.
60 * 11.28 = 677 miles on gas
3536 - 677 = 2859 miles on electric
650,380 kwh / 2859 miles = 227.5 kwh / mile

It's all about the AER. Horses for courses.
The PHEVrius (assuming it's just priced as a $4k option) would be something everybody* would consider as an efficient vehicle.
The Leaf has limitations but for somebody who can use the range but commute safely within it or can afford to take the risk on the degradation it will be cheaper to run than the PHEVrius.
Similarly, the Volt will have a niche among those who can make full use of the extra EV range and stay off the CS.
I'd like them all to sell out and well.
* Who can afford a 26k new car and isn't a hybrid hater.
nidly 07-15-2010, 05:44 PM Would list the cost/mile comparison for the electric vs. gas ? Thanks.
