View Full Version : Week of June 21st - June 27th, 2010 (Nat Avg $2.75) Right Lane Cruiser 06-21-2010, 06:08 AM Welcome to another week! No driving for me today as I'm not feeling well and working from home. PaleMelanesian 06-21-2010, 08:27 AM 87.7 for me this morning. That brings the tank up to 80.8 / 724 miles. epurvee 06-21-2010, 09:25 AM Infinite MPG / 16 Miles Home to work by bike. lxmike 06-21-2010, 06:21 PM My brother had to drop his harley off for servgice and guess who got to pick him up there? :p Didin't do bad at all! In fact was pretty good trip there and back even with the rain and wet roads. Brother didn't say much he just sat back and closed his eyes for the trip. I know he wanted to get home, but he respected my driving. we have a silent agreement. don't say anything about how the other drives and if they do then it's a friend discuccion about it. that being said here's todays tally 43.1- 8.4 miles to work. had to park on second floor of garage. 45.2- 14.3 mile to pick up brother. In garage i parked so i could push car back out and roll down to the ramp, but soneone came out from stairwell and i got lil embaressed and cut it short. :o 46.8- 11.8 motorcycle shop to home. brother must have though i was crazy when i'd "fas" when light was green. warthog1984 06-21-2010, 06:42 PM 193mi on 3.5 gal for 53.1MPG from the bandit. Mostly city driving, so a bit better than EPA. Right Lane Cruiser 06-21-2010, 08:52 PM My wife took our daughter, her sister, and her sister's two boys to the science museum today in the FFH (yes, two car seats and a booster seat fit just fine in the back). Apparently, as they were getting loaded up the oldest (my 4yr old nephew) pointed and said, "Look at Sean's hotrod!!! That's a cool car!" :D:thumbs_up: I've never heard my Insight referred to like that before but I kinda like it. :p Die2self 06-21-2010, 09:14 PM home>work - 25.3 / 13.4 miles (77F S@5) My truck seems to like it best around upper 70 and lower 80's work>home - 23.0 / 13.1 miles (92F S18 Gusting to 24) of course the wind doesn't help to much on he way home  daily avg = 24.2 / 26.5 miles tank is on the full line with 57 miles on the odo ETE is at 531 miles ~ 24.1 MPG now (may be a good start on the next challenge) Right Lane Cruiser 06-22-2010, 06:10 AM I got off to a little bit later start this morning and the traffic sure showed it. 67F, 4mph cross/headwind from the SSW, partly cloudy: 113.9mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work) The tank is steady at 114.2mpg over 963.9mi with 11 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge. PaleMelanesian 06-22-2010, 08:11 AM New Record commute! :woot: 95.3 mpg / 10.7 miles. 81F, light headwind. Last night was 79.2 mpg in the scorching heat. The tank is now at 81 / 746 miles, and between 1/2 and 1/4 on the guess-gauge. Right Lane Cruiser 06-22-2010, 08:56 AM Way to go, Andrew!! :woot::flag: rhwinger 06-22-2010, 10:31 AM Interesting day on the road yesterday. Just had new Michelin Energy Saver’s mounted on my HCHII. On the first drive into work at 5 AM, I found my normal route closed due to an accident. Doubled back a few miles and the resulting delay due to the detour had me on the interstate to make up for lost time. Got to work with 65 mpg/40 mile segment on the display – not bad I thought. The tires are still at 32 PSI from the dealer, in 50 to 60 mph speed ranges, bad traffic, etc... Walked into the office and found my phone ringing off the hook. Had to go right home to deal with a situation with one of the kids, interstate driving just about the whole way to get home promptly. Still hung in there at 66 MPG/72 miles when I got home. A 20 mile run out to a friends house to retrieve the oldest son. After the crisis was resolved, it was back to work, interstate driving again in order to minimize lost time. 65 MPG and 100 something miles upon second arrival to the parking lot. Back home after the work day, it’s 90+ degrees out there in the afternoon sun, and my shirt is soaked in sweat when I pull into the day care to pick up the youngest son. Turns out it’s the wrong day care, another cross town run in the heat to the RIGHT day care. Back to the house just in time to get ready for a Boy Scout meeting, passengers now demanding A/C. Still holding 62-63 MPG with the minimum A/C I can get away with, without stirring up a passenger revolt, with over 150 miles pulling into the parking lot for the meeting. Take another family’s kids home after the meeting and finally pull into my garage at 9:30 PM. 164.1 miles at 62.1 MPG. Whew! Glad that day was over! PaleMelanesian 06-22-2010, 10:39 AM Wow! Good thing you have the car you do. Right Lane Cruiser 06-22-2010, 10:43 AM That's darned impressive, Bob!!! Right Lane Cruiser 06-22-2010, 03:09 PM I started out well on the way home hitting 135mpg at just 2.6mi... but traffic just wouldn't cooperate the entire way. At one point I was up to 144mpg... 85F (90F heat index), 4mph tail/crosswind from the S, sunny: 132.5mpg for 22.7mi (Work to home) The tank is back up to 114.4mpg over 986.7mi with 11 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge. Day Total: 122.4mpg over 45.2mi Kinda warm out there... especially with rolled up windows. I forgot what it is like to have standing water beads all over your arms... :p PaleMelanesian 06-22-2010, 03:24 PM Why not open the windows? Opening them a couple inches, the aerodynamic hit is insignificant at the speeds we travel. My style in the summer is to have the right-front and left-rear both about 2 inches down, and my window 6+ inches open, but closed to about 2 inches for the high-speed stretches. lxmike 06-22-2010, 03:48 PM Doing a lil demodding here. Took out the piece of cardboard i keep in front of my radiator and also i had blocked of the snorkel on my air cleaner so it would only be able to pull underhood air. gonna see if they make any kind of difference. I do notice on trips to town and back car would heat up a bit more with cardboard in. todays numbers this will be easy 44.9 - 8.4 to work 44.9 6.3 miles home. not this isn't a typo :D tank sitting at 156 miles, 44.8 mpg still above 3/4 on dash guage. I have 8 more days of work then i start my 3 week summer vacation!! Right Lane Cruiser 06-22-2010, 04:35 PM Hi, Andrew... I do use rolled down windows when I can but I had some higher speed areas and also some gusting winds. I typically run the vent fan if I have to have the windows up but the little 12V doesn't like much of that (even on low speed setting) when FASing. Unfortunately, I can't get any crossflow in this car because the windows are directly across from each other... unless I roll them pretty much all the way down. :p Mike, a 3wk vacation? You lucky guy!! Enjoy! :flag: Die2self 06-22-2010, 06:17 PM home>work - 25.3 / 13.4 miles (77F S@9) work>home - 23.2 / 13.2 miles (95F with Heat index of 105F, S@10 Gusting to 21) Still holding out on the AC, black truck with these temps is getting tuff. daily avg = 24.3 / 26.6 miles tank is at 15/16 with 83.6 miles ETE is still at 531 with ~24.2 MPG Right Lane Cruiser 06-23-2010, 06:20 AM The trip in wasn't much fun. Plenty of road raging out there. :( 70F, 14mph cross/headwind from the SW, raining: 104.5mpg for 22.6mi (Home to work) The tank is back down to 114.2mpg over 1009.3mi with 10 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge. PaleMelanesian 06-23-2010, 08:31 AM Nothing remarkable here. 83 home 82.5 to work Tank is at 81 / 769 miles and approaching 1/4 on the gauge. Right Lane Cruiser 06-23-2010, 03:12 PM Man, today just wasn't making things easy for me!! I couldn't quite match this morning's commute. :( 71F, 23-33mph headwind from the NW, raining: 104.1mpg for 23.1mi (Work to home) The tank is back down to 113.9mpg over 1032.5mi with 10 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge. Day Total: 104.3mpg over 45.8mi Blah. :p diamondlarry 06-23-2010, 04:21 PM I still got it!:woot: I took the Prius (now being driven primarily by my wife) to the station to be filled. She is going on a trip to Cedar Point and is leaving right after work tomorrow so I wanted it topped off for her. She should be able to get there and back on one tank as we were able to go to Cleveland and back over Memorial Day weekend on one tank and Cedar Point is closer. Anyway, with a temperature of 84F and winds SSW@ 15-20 mph and gusts to 35 mph, I was able to average 110.6 mpg over 17.4 miles. Segment 1 was primarily into the headwind and segment 2 was primarily a tailwind. 84.2 8.7 161.1 8.7 Die2self 06-23-2010, 06:11 PM like riding a bike eh Larry? home>work = 25.3 / 13.4 miles (77F S@9) work>home = 24.0 / 13.2 miles (92F H.I. = 99, SW@13) daily avg = 24.7 / 26.6 miles tank is at 7/8 with 110.2 miles on it. ETE is up to 534 miles and MPG is steady at 24.2 diamondlarry 06-23-2010, 06:51 PM Hi, Andrew... I do use rolled down windows when I can but I had some higher speed areas and also some gusting winds. Unfortunately, I can't get any crossflow in this car because the windows are directly across from each other... unless I roll them pretty much all the way down. :p Mike, a 3wk vacation? You lucky guy!! Enjoy! :flag: Any ideas on how to run the vent fan on an Insight with the Auto-Climate Control System? Would it be as simple as pulling the fuse for the A/C? lxmike 06-23-2010, 06:52 PM Oh well.. not bad of a day considering. took my longer route to work and got stuck behind a truck n trailer and had to touch the brakes to keep back. 43.3- 8.4 mile to work 45.1- 6.3 miles home Right Lane Cruiser 06-23-2010, 07:21 PM Larry, with the HVAC system off turn the temperature dial all the way to the coldest setting (the LCD will show 60F), hit the Econ button twice so that you see "A/C Off" on the LCD, then tap the fan button to set the speed. You can cycle through any of the modes by pressing that button. One of them is floor and defrost — I use this to clear the windshield without AC. lxmike 06-24-2010, 05:59 AM Off work day but have some yardwork to do! Anyone wanna come down n help? :p Right Lane Cruiser 06-24-2010, 06:08 AM Not today, Mike... but have fun with that! :) 60F, 4mph tail/crosswind from the WNW, overcast: 116.7mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work) The tank is steady at 113.9mpg over 1054.9mi with 9 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge. PaleMelanesian 06-24-2010, 08:19 AM Several stops on the way home. 68.5 mpg / 3.4 miles 68.9 / 4.0 80.0 / 9.1 This morning was a great run. 80F and humid. 90.9 mpg / 10.7 miles. - One pulse, I shifted into 5th too soon (20 instead of 25), and the pulse went too long as a result. - One FAS, I keyed back on too quickly, losing about a second of idle fuel. - No loss here, but one hill I came up short by a few feet. I jumped out and pushed. :p They just repaved that section, and the rolling resistance is higher until the new surface cures. Right Lane Cruiser 06-24-2010, 03:04 PM 79F, 2mph cross/headwind from the W, sunny: 125.0mpg for 22.6mi (Work to home) The tank is now back up to 114.2mpg over 1077.6mi with 9 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge. Day Total: 120.7mpg over 45.0mi Taliesin 06-24-2010, 07:07 PM They just repaved that section, and the rolling resistance is higher until the new surface cures. I got a similar surprise today, though it wasn't new roads... The weather conspired to make the tar bubble up out of the asphalt on our road. That stuff is STICKY on the tires. Killed the coasts. Still got 38.0 on the commute in. diamondlarry 06-24-2010, 07:16 PM I didn't do too bad today. I had 105.7 over 19.5 miles. This included a segment of 117.8 over 8.9 miles on the way home from the gas station. It seems as though the FCD is a bit on the optimistic side as I had 98.5 showing for the tank and the calculated was 93.8 mpg over 716.9 miles. Perhaps it is the unregistered miles due to FAS ing? Die2self 06-24-2010, 07:37 PM home>work = 22.7 / 13.4 miles (72F N@7) work>home = 25.7 / 13.1 miles (88F N@9) daily avg = 24.2 / 23.5 miles tank is just above 3/4 with 136.7 miles ETE is at 533 miles and still creeping up 24.2 MPG Chalupa102 06-24-2010, 08:47 PM Normally i take the bicycle, but decided to drive today so i could fill up my car and get gas for my lawn mower. 80F with winds from the W @ 11mph - 51.8mpg for 5.2 miles from home to Church for music practice - 34.5mpg for 1.7 miles from Church to the gas station Tank fill up was 48.9mpg over 544.4 miles using 11.124 gallons - 39.2mpg for 7 miles from gas station to home Day total: 42.4mpg The tank is full at 39.2mpg. Right Lane Cruiser 06-24-2010, 09:25 PM Larry, it is such a small tank that it doesn't take much variation in fill level to cause fairly large swings in mileage numbers. Just be extra careful for consistent fills and the numbers should fall in line. Check out my logs for examples -- I record the FCD readout in every entry. I drove the FFH to and from Church tonight trying out some of the info GaryG has been sharing about his methods for squeaking Prius numbers out of his FEH. 81F down, 8mph cross/headwind from the SSW, sunny, 75F back, 8mph cross/tailwind from the SSW, clear: 63.0mpg for 17.8mi (Home to Church) 66.7mpg for 17.8mi (Church to home) Day Total: 64.8mpg over 35.6mi Right Lane Cruiser 06-25-2010, 06:06 AM It has been nearly two years since the last time I did this, but I finally hit the mark on the morning commute again. :D 64F, 5mph cross/headwind from the S, clear: 120.0mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work) The tank is back up to 114.4mpg over 1100.0mi with 8 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge. PaleMelanesian 06-25-2010, 08:12 AM Wooo Sean! I did: 83.1 home 92.7 this morning. 2nd best commute, and would have been a record last week. The tank is up to 81.2 / 826 miles and 1/4 on the gauge. So far the projections are nearly identical to last tank's. epurvee 06-25-2010, 08:28 AM Great commute this morning. Horrible trip on the way home. About 1.6 miles from home a storm had knocked a tree down and the deputies at the scene made all of us detour into a neighborhood which took me 30 minutes to find my way out of, with speed limit of 25, speed bumps and lots of stop signs, the Venture was screwed out of the 27 MPG I had going at that point. 31.9 MPG / 11.0 Miles home to work 20.1 MPG / 15.6 Miles work to home LinuxGold 06-25-2010, 09:02 AM It has been nearly two years since the last time I did this, but I finally hit the mark on the morning commute again. :D 64F, 5mph cross/headwind from the S, clear: 120.0mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work) The tank is back up to 114.4mpg over 1100.0mi with 8 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge. Good Job Sean! :Banane53: Right Lane Cruiser 06-25-2010, 02:45 PM Thanks, guys. :) It was a good feeling, that's for sure! Unfortunately, it decided to rain on me for the trip home. I started out with sprinkles and wet roads, drove out of it, then got hit with fairly heavy rain as soon as I got into the 3mi city "beep'n'creep" section at the very end of my commute. Don't ask me why the day total doesn't make sense... something to do with truncation errors in the display, I'm sure. I keep one trip meter counting just the current trip, another the day, and the third the tank average. <shrug> 77F, 7mph tail/crosswind from the S, raining: 120.0mpg for 22.4mi (Work to home) The tank is steady at 114.4mpg over 1122.5mi with 8 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge. Day Total: 119.8mpg over 44.9mi :p PaleMelanesian 06-25-2010, 03:53 PM Wait... 120 + 120 / 2 = 119.8? Wait again... 144 tank average?!!! Great work regardless of the funny math. Right Lane Cruiser 06-25-2010, 04:01 PM Oops! The second one was a fat fingered typo. :o Note that the total distance for the day is 0.1mi longer, too. I don't know what the car calculated with... lxmike 06-25-2010, 04:38 PM just posting todays numbers guys. work got me all aggravated!! 44.2- 8.4 miles 42.2- 6.3 miles tank sitting at 186 miles, just under 3/4 Die2self 06-26-2010, 11:11 AM Yesterdays numbers were impressive to me ;) home>work = 27.3 / 13.4 miles (72F E@3) I think this is a PB TO work. Traffic was not pushy and have been leaving for work earlier work>home = 24.7 / 13.1 miles (92 H.I.=99 S@9) daily avg - 26.0 / 23.5 miles (NICE!!) Oh and only 1.02 gals used I am trying for a sub 1 gal commute in this Fuel Sucking Pig. tank is up to 24.5 MPG with 163.2 miles and showing 3/4 of a tank ETE is up to 539 miles Weekly avg = 24.7 over 132.7 miles Right Lane Cruiser 06-26-2010, 12:08 PM Excellent work, Jason!! :flag: Right Lane Cruiser 06-26-2010, 08:50 PM More driving in the wife's FFH today to pick up some food from a Vietnamese restaurant across town. I didn't record the weather conditions but I was pretty happy with the results considering the traffic and higher speed driving required. 52.2mpg for 9.8mi (Home to Pink Flower via direct, congested route... warmup hit) 69.1mpg for 10.3mi (Pink Flower back along the same route but bypassing the last segment using part of my Church route to Rainbow Foods for desert) 57.9mpg for 2.3mi (Rainbow Foods to home) Day Total: 59.5mpg over 22.4mi diamondlarry 06-26-2010, 10:14 PM In the rush of being in vacation mode, I forgot to write down numbers so I'll go by memory.:o I went to Cedar Point yesterday and I thought the Insight did quite well. I was under some minor time constraints so I didn't take it super easy; I tried to stay above 55 on the IN toll road/OH turnpike. :p On the way there, I ended up with 80.1 mpg over 209 miles with an average speed of 55 mph. There were times that I was able to sustain 105 mpg for several miles at a time while traveling 60-63 mph. I was able to sustain 90-95 mpg up to around 65 for as long as the terrain was flat. Today started out good but went downhill fast after two factors ganged up on me. 1) The wind switched from a mostly crosswind to a pretty much full on headwind. 2) My passenger was getting miserable in the heat and the fan on high trick wasn't cutting it.:p I did cycle the A/C off and on though. At one point I was up to 82.9 mpg but by the time I got back to town. it had slipped to 72 something but I was able to recover back to just over 74 mpg. I will get to test my highway skills once again next week as my wife and I are going to Cincinnati to visit the parents of my daughter's boyfriend. I won't be under as much of a time crunch then so I'm hoping for closer to the 85-90+ range. It is a 268 mile trip. vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
