View Full Version : Week of May 31st - Jun 6th, 2010 (Nat Avg $2.74)
Right Lane Cruiser 06-01-2010, 06:07 AM Welcome to a new week and hopefully some nice weather!
I had an okay drive to work this morning, though I got to work and found that my "acceptable" parking slot has been moved yet again. Every few months it seems that one of the slots I am used to parking in gets marked with "reserved" or "permit parking". :( Why can't everyone do just do the first come, first served bit? If I have to get in early to get a nice spot, why shouldn't everyone? :p
59F, 6mph cross/headwind from the SSW, partly cloudy:
113.9mpg for 22.6mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 117.5mpg over 328.9mi
diamondlarry 06-01-2010, 06:49 AM Not a good day at all for me.:( I had two strikes against me: SOC management and very dense fog. The fog was so dense that I had to have the lights on and I have just enough hills that I didn't want to be going too slow and have someone come up and do a rearender on me. Oh well, the rest of the day should be good for some good numbers. The temperature was 61F and winds were calm. I had 92.8 over 20.0 miles. The coolant temp was at a nice 168F this morning.;)
LinuxGold 06-01-2010, 07:32 AM Home to Work
71F Mostly Cloudy, WSW @ 7mph (crosswind/tailwind/headwind)
32.85 mpg
26.88 miles
warthog1984 06-01-2010, 01:46 PM Last couple of days:
128 miles of mixed local & superslab riding on 2.3gal (includes small spill from carbs when I forgot kickstand) for 55.6MPG. More EcoRiding than true hypermiling.
lxmike 06-01-2010, 02:41 PM Well, I passed the 400 mile mark and right now sitting at 414 and gas guage showing about 1/4 left. 86 miles to go for a 500 tank :flag:
todays numbers.
45.9- 7.4 to work.
45.4-6.4 home.
summertime i here now! been hot but not the humidity has arrived.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-01-2010, 03:02 PM Go Mike!! :woot:
I had a less than stellar trip home today. The traffic was bad, road construction is getting worse, the wind didn't help on several legs of the journey, and I was distracted by work stuff. :p
82F, 11mph tail/crosswind from the SSW, overcast:
121.4mpg for 22.9mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 117.7mpg over 351.9mi with all 20 bars still showing on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 117.5mpg over 45.5mi
diamondlarry 06-01-2010, 06:02 PM We hit a high of 83F and the wind was S@ 5 mph with gusts to 12 mph. I surpassed 100 mpg but not by much. I guess more learning is to come.
92.8 20.0-to wife's work and back
117.9 13.1-to wife's work via a different route. Not sure if I'll stick with this one or not
99.8 11.4-back home
Average for today was 100.9 mpg. The tank is at 103.? at just over 110 miles and all 20 bars remain on the guess-gauge.
Die2self 06-01-2010, 10:36 PM home>work
- 24.4 / 13.4 miles (69F calm)
work>home
- 22.4 / 13.2 miles (91F S17) nasty head wind
daily avg = 23.4 / 26.6 miles
tank is just under 6/8 with 167.5 on the odo
~23.3 and ETE 512 miles
Right Lane Cruiser 06-02-2010, 06:08 AM Blasted rain and road construction. :(
57F, 9mph cross/tailwind from the N, raining:
108.8mpg for 22.5mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 117.0mpg over 374.4mi with all 20 bars on the fuel gauge.
diamondlarry 06-02-2010, 06:29 AM Pretty good start to the day despite a heavy downpour and a 10 mph headwind on the return trip. I had 64F and the wind was S@ 10 mph with gusts to 30 mph.
121.2 8.6
105.9 11.9
Average for today was 111.8 mpg. I have noticed that the Insight isn't quite as picky about rain and wet roads as the Prius is. I would have done extremely well to hit 90 mpg in the Prius with these conditions. This afternoon is supposed to be nicer weather but I have some SOC issues to take care of.:o:p
LinuxGold 06-02-2010, 08:14 AM Tried different approach in High speed P&G from home to work
70F Clear, Calm
32.13 MPG
26.87 miles
PaleMelanesian 06-02-2010, 08:22 AM We took a weekend trip to St Louis in the van. 650 miles each way, with a moderate load and AC on, and kids in the back, so decent speed was required. ;) I used DWL and strategic downhill coasting, and good LRR tires (GY FuelMax).
~30.5 mpg round trip, with an average speed just above 60 mph. (The van is rated new-epa 16/23 mpg)
-----------------
This morning, my car had a low battery (10.9v). It almost turned over, but not quite, so I jumped it from the van.
75.1 mpg driving (idling at stops), but 67.7 including a couple minutes of driveway idling before leaving.
LinuxGold 06-02-2010, 08:28 AM I am thinking about creating a pdf file detailing on how to hypermile a V6 AT car to distribute to budding hypermilers.
PaleMelanesian 06-02-2010, 01:30 PM Another weekend sighting. We saw loads of these headed north/east through Arkansas. Probably a dozen trucks, with two blades each. Also a few hubs in the mix.

SpartyBrutus 06-02-2010, 01:41 PM Just posting a bit this week after some time away.
Inherited my Dads 99 Merc Grand Marquis w/only 52k mi and am seeing if I should sell it or not. If I average over 30mpg on my daily commute this week, then its a keeper (at least thats what I will tell my Wife...)
Stay tuned to old school odo miles / refill gallons results end of the week.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-02-2010, 04:22 PM Good to have you back, SB!!
I had another disappointing drive home. :p Cooler weather and all that construction didn't make things easy on me. Besides that, where did all this traffic come from at 2:30PM??
68F, 6mph head/crosswind from the NE, overcast:
120.0mpg for 23.0mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 117.2mpg over 397.4mi
Day Total: 114.2mpg over 45.5.mi
I still have Choir practice to attend tonight so the averages are very likely to drop.
lxmike 06-02-2010, 07:40 PM I had some of that construction too! they had one lane blocked off for a lil bit and had a flagger in middle of open lane deciding what side to let go, luckily he let my side keep going and i wasn't held up too much. I went in at 9:30 so i found a nice high spot in garage and that helped my return trip numbers as you'll see.
43.2- 7.4 miles to work.
47.7- 6.4 miles home. :D
Even managed to bring the tank avg up another .1 :woot:
tank sitting at 428 miles. 72 miles to go for 500 :flag:
Die2self 06-02-2010, 08:38 PM home>work
- 24.2 / 13.3 miles (73F S10)

daily avg = 24.1 / 26.5 miles
tank is at 194 miles ~23.4 with ETE up to 515 miles now
Chalupa102 06-02-2010, 10:01 PM Left last night and got here today in NC for a vacation visiting some friends. When i left MA at about 11:30pm, it was about 65F. Today, during the trip i got as hot as 92F. It was mostly sunny with some rain toward the end.
- 51.3mpg for 200 miles from home to rest area in NJ to sleep
- 54.0mpg for 91.5 miles from rest area to gas station in MD
The fill up ended up being 49.0mpg over 505.4 miles. This is currently the best tank i have ever had.
- 56.1mpg for 154.9 miles from gas station to rest area in VA for lunch
- 51.3mpg for 132.4 miles from VA rest area to NC rest area to stretch
- 47.7mpg for 148 miles from NC rest area to destination at friend's house in NC (had some heavy rain on part of this trip)
Day total: 51.8mpg
The tank is currently at 51.6mpg over 435.5 miles with 4.6 gallons remaining.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-02-2010, 10:30 PM Way to go, Mike!! :woot:
Jason, think you can make that magic 500mi tank this time? :D
Dan, those are some sweet numbers!!
I managed a personal best for the first time in quite a while on the way in to Church tonight. :D I had it at its highest 5.3mi into the trip when I had to stop at a light... at 125.0mpg. ;) It was worse after that but still good enough to eclipse my previous best by a solid 3.3mpg. :flag:
Unfortunately, the way back is always tough as it has long uphill sections... and a cop decided to tail me for the last 4 miles so I couldn't drive as slowly as I'd like. :p Oh well. If it hadn't been for that the daily average would have at least stayed what it was this afternoon.
71F down, 7mph cross/tailwind from the N, clear,
64F back, 1mph headwind from the NW, clear:
116.3mpg for 18.1mi (Home to Church)
109.7mpg for 18.4mi (Church to home)
The tank is down to 116.7mpg over 434.0mi with 20 bars showing on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 113.5mpg over 82.1mi
On the plus side, the lifetime average ticked up to 91.4mpg on the way to Church this evening. I think I'll finally get it up over 92mpg this summer!
Right Lane Cruiser 06-03-2010, 06:09 AM Well that was a pleasant drive in despite leaving several minutes late this morning. :)
I hit the 0.9mi mark at 135.3mpg... I don't think I've ever seen it quite that high before. If I could just get rid of the construction and get the traffic to go somewhere else... :p
47F, no wind, clear:
115.6mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work)
The tank is steady at 116.7mpg over 456.5mi
diamondlarry 06-03-2010, 06:23 AM I had 59F for this morning and the wind is WNW@ 5 mph with gusts to 11 mph. The avweage is at 105.1 mpg. I think I have that pesky SoC issue under control for today so I expect the average to rise this afternoon.
101.5 8.4
107.8 11.9
LinuxGold 06-03-2010, 06:57 AM Yesterday Work -> Royal Farms (for some snacks)

PaleMelanesian 06-03-2010, 08:42 AM 76.6 / 10.5 home last night. Construction, down to 1 lane with a flagger. Sound familiar, anyone? :p
85.3 / 8.9 - after dinner, to church for music practice
74.6 / 9.8 - back home. Had to watch the battery and headlight usage, so idled a bit more (and detoured to avoid hard stops).
87.6 / 10.7 this morning. :D That's a to-work record by 1 whole mpg!
The tank is up to 79.1 / 371 miles and below F.
lxmike 06-03-2010, 11:52 AM 76.6 / 10.5 home last night. Construction, down to 1 lane with a flagger. Sound familiar, anyone? :p
My flaggers were there today. :)
I had to make a trip to my bank and when i turned i saw them down there and made a quick about face and went down to next road. it extends my trip to work about a mile, but cuts out a stop.
45.0- 6 mile to bank.
I stopped at store right up road from bank but didn't record the numbers! :o
I needed a few thing and to fill my gas can for when my low fuel light does come on.
tank sitting at 438 miles. 62 to go for 500 :flag:
Right Lane Cruiser 06-03-2010, 02:05 PM Looks like you've got this one in the bag, Mike!!! :D
CleanMPG member EVuser is in town today and we met up for lunch and a quick demo drive in the Insight before I had to run off for a doctor's appointment. Good discusion and a really interesting guy.
I didn't reset the trip gauge after our 2.6mi drive at 97.x mpg from cold. ;)
75F, 8mph tail/crosswind from the S, sunny:
120.7mpg for 22.3mi (Work loop, then to doctor's office)
The tank average is back up to 117.0mpg over 478.8mi with 20 bars on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 118.2mpg over 44.8mi
Right Lane Cruiser 06-03-2010, 02:47 PM Now that trip was satisfying! :D
75F, 5mph wind from the SSW, sunny:
127.8mpg for 4.1mi (Doctor's office to home)
The tank is steady at 117.0mpg over 483.0mi with all 20 bars on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 118.9mpg over 49.0mi
diamondlarry 06-03-2010, 03:36 PM Good news and bad news. The good news, my SoC is doing great. The bad news, FE number not so much.:p I think I have some more work to do on balancing SoC management and high FE numbers. The temperature was 75F and the wind was NW@ 5-10 mph with gusts to 15 mph.
101.5 8.4-to station for coffee
107.8 11.9-on to wife's work and back home
101.2 9.3-to wife's work
93.0 11.9-back home
Average for today was 100.5 mpg.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-04-2010, 06:08 AM Keep working at it, Larry. :) You'll find the right balance and then there will be no stopping you!
I had wet roads (it rained all night) but I was able to compensate fairly well because there was less traffic than yesterday morning. Hopefully the afternoon commute isn't too bad...
64F, 9mph cross/headwind from the SSE, overcast with wet roads:
113.5mpg for 22.5mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 116.7mpg over 505.5mi and I still have all 20 bars on the fuel gauge.
diamondlarry 06-04-2010, 06:26 AM I sure hope so Sean. In the meantime, it's kind of driving me nuts.:p Ok, my daughter would say I'm already nuts but that's a while other story.:D
I have 56F and wind NE@ <5 mph. The daily average is sitting at 102.9 mpg.
102.6 8.4
103.1 12.0
LinuxGold 06-04-2010, 06:54 AM There must be something cosmically perfectly aligned in the universe. This morning I took out of parking lot from my apartment, aggressively FAS 'd in motion going downhill out of complex. Pulse & Glided then FAS 'd to a stop on end of hill, hit 30 mpg @ 1 mile.
I approached slow moving car going @ 55 mph downhill, decided to do 5 mph Pulse & Glide behind that car ALL THE WAY to Cecil, MD rather than to pass that car. A lot of cars lined up behind me, (Glad blame wasn't pinned to me, it's that car in front of me!) I slowed down to a 18 wheeler behind me then sped up to that car like a bouncy ball between two objects.
When I turned east from Cecil, MD, the slow car continued southbound on RT 213, the mpguino showed the staggering and unbelievable status, it was 37 mpg!! So I decided to continue that "Bouncing" Pulse & Glide all the way to work and was able to achieve, wait, let me make the report....
Home to work
73F Clear, 2 mph W (crosswind/headwind)
38.05 mpg (200.26% of EPA)
26.83 miles!
:bananahuge:
Right Lane Cruiser 06-04-2010, 07:14 AM Sweet work, Scott!!! :woot:
You've got the bug now. :D
LinuxGold 06-04-2010, 07:56 AM Thanks Sean!
PaleMelanesian 06-04-2010, 08:30 AM 77.3 mpg home last night
86.4 this morning
The tank is up to 79.3 / 397 miles.
warthog1984 06-04-2010, 03:00 PM 121miles on 2.1 gal for 57.6 MPG on the bike.
Missed shifts while accelerating, brief hit on the throttle dragged me down. But it was very fun:D:D:D.
SpartyBrutus 06-04-2010, 03:41 PM Spent the week in my Dads 99 Merc Grand Marquis. Finished with 329mi / 10.2 gal or 32.2mpg. Not bad for 17/24 EPA though mostly highway miles.
May keep this car now.
lxmike 06-04-2010, 04:38 PM well Todeay i wasn't sure if my flaggers would be out there so i took the longer way to work and it helped out.
46.6- 8.4 miles to work
44.3- 6.4 miles home
tank sitting at 452 miles and no low fuel light yet! it has flashed on going round some of my quicker turns, but not in steady driving.
48 miles to for 500 :)
Right Lane Cruiser 06-04-2010, 05:56 PM I didn't have a good trip home at all. :( Extra heavy traffic and an unscheduled stop did not help the average one bit. :p
76F, 14mph cross/headwind from the W, sunny:
115.3mpg for 22.6mi (Work to home)
The tank is steady at 116.7mpg over 528.1mi with 20 bars on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 114.4mpg over 45.1
Chalupa102 06-04-2010, 11:07 PM Yesterday as per wunderground: the low for eastern NC was 71F and the high was 84F with winds from the SSW @ 7mph
- Yesterday's total: 45.8mpg over 81.1 miles (made a lot of shorts trips)
Today the low was 71F and the high was 88F with winds variable @ 7mph
- 48.7mpg for 23.4 miles from friend's place to base
- 38.2mpg for 4 miles from base to gas station with rain showers
The fill up today broke my record even more :). Got 54.6mpg over 544.8 miles using 9.982 gallons:woot:
- 51.3mpg for 61.9 miles from gas station to restaurant/restaurant to friend's place (forgot to get individual trips :o)
Day total: 49.3mpg
The tank is currently at 51.3mpg over 61.9 miles.
Die2self 06-05-2010, 11:39 AM Thursdays number, I have a house full of family and that day was just super busy
= 24.2 over 32.1 miles
Friday
home>work
- 25.6 / 13.3 miles (68F S5)
work>home
- 23.6 / 13.2 miles (87F SW14)
daily avg = 24.6 / 26.5 miles
tank is at 252.6 at the 1/2 way point
MPG ~23.6 and ETE 519 miles
diamondlarry 06-05-2010, 11:45 AM As of today, all numbers from the Prius will be mostly from my wife's efforts. Just to brag on her a bit, she got 71.9 over 6.5 miles on wet roads at 66F and no wind.
Right Lane Cruiser 06-06-2010, 02:40 PM My daughter isn't feeling well today so she and the wife stayed home. It was a good thing too because it was an extra long service.
I managed to convince her to let me take the FFH to Church and back on my normal route for some benchmarking and exploratory technique tuning. The car did pretty well but I'll need more seat time to dial it in properly. It is a technically challenging route that typically pulls in numbers at least 15% lower than my work route...
68F down, 6mph tailwind from the NW, partly cloudy,
72F back, 11mph cross/headwind from the W, overcast:
60.6mpg for 17.8mi (Home to Church)
61.5mpg for 17.8mi (Church to home)
Day Total: 61.0mpg over 35.6mi
some_other_dave 06-06-2010, 06:46 PM 50 MPG tank: CHECK! Filled up yesterday, just over 50 MPG . I was quite surprised when the fill only showed 8.5 gallons; I tried to put more in and it clicked off--twice!
Hopefully it's not a bogus result and I can keep pulling these sort of numbers. We'll see!
