The French designed Venturi Astrolab may be the answer to many of our current and future climate problems today. With upper body panel(s) consisting of 3.6 sq. meters of 21% efficient solar cels and a 7 kWh NiMH battery pack for energy storage, this little wonder can travel up to 10 miles per day on sun energy alone. The NiMH battery pack can be charged via std. outlet at 1.5 kW in < 5 hours. With its included 16 KW motor, the Astro Lab can achieve a total of 65 miles a day with a top speed of over 74 mph. Its battery pack is estimated to have > 2,500 cycles (165,000 miles or more) and at least 10 years of useful life.

Its chassis consist of a carbon fiber shell/body and aluminum front and rear units to support its low 280 Kg (~ 620 pounds empty) weight. This structure is not only designed to supply the strength and flexibility to support its own weight, the weight of its driver and passenger through any number of normal every day commutes but is strong enough to protect its occupants in case of collision from any angle.

Besides its lack of amenities many would find mandatory including a complete air bag package, PWL, PL, PM, adjustable seats, SAT Radio, iPOD interface, and a bevy of cup holders to name just a few, its $92,000 EUR ($121,000 + USD at today’s conversion rates) price tag makes this vehicle affordable only to those with 7 + figure salaries and a lot of excess disposable income :(

The Venturi Astrolab Solar Cel equipped vehicle is scheduled for delivery as early as January 2008.

It's a "rich boy's toy", not a real car. Still, it's a step in the right direction.
