View Full Version : Week of May 3rd - May 9th, 2010 (Nat Avg $2.91)
Right Lane Cruiser 05-03-2010, 06:30 AM Welcome to May!!
I had typical Monday morning traffic and winds to deal with. :p
48F (44F windchill), 9mph head/crosswind from the WSW, overcast:
99.8mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 108.3mpg over 445.9mi with 14 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
diamondlarry 05-03-2010, 07:07 AM Doing pretty good today. We had 56F and the wind was SW@ 5 mph. The average is at 96.5 mpg for the day.
100 8.8
112 .5
93.6 11.9
PaleMelanesian 05-03-2010, 08:07 AM Good start to the week. 82.5 mpg at 53 degrees.
Tank is at 78.4 / 815 miles. My projections put the Low Fuel Light at about 985 miles, and I've gone 50 past that point several times. It looks good for the Kilo.
lxmike 05-03-2010, 01:02 PM well today went pretty good for me. work and driving wise. temps this weekend broke 90 for a lil bit sunday. todays high was only 87 :p :)
45.1- 7.2 mile to work. could have been better except for some "roadblockage"
43.4- 6.4 mile home. tried to extend my loop through the shopping center but i'd need to carry more speed so thats a bust for now.
now for the "blockage" coming over the flyover i saw two set on red n blues up ahead and i thought"gee that's nice a reason to drive slow now" :D As I got closer I saw they was in left lane so i stayed where i was and slowed down alot caue they was still in roadway. i rolled past them and saw what they had stopped it was a 6-8" Alligator in the middle of the road!
Andrew : do you use the fuel level x-guage at all? Just wondering what it shows when you get down there.
Sean: Just couldn't make that last .2? ;)
Larry: your approaching insight terratory now! :D
PaleMelanesian 05-03-2010, 01:32 PM My old scangauge doesn't have the x-gauge feature. My car also struggles with poor fuel pressure when the tank gets low, so I'd rather not "plumb the depths" too far.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-03-2010, 04:13 PM Hi, Mike -- nope. Traffic and wind held me back. :( Same thing this afternoon.
54F, 13mph cross/headwind from the W, overcast:
112.0mpg for 23.0mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 108.5mpg over 469.0mi with 14 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 105.7mpg over 45.8mi
At least I got the oil changed when I got home. :p
diamondlarry 05-03-2010, 06:41 PM Not too bad for today. Grocery shopping always hits me hard.:( We hit a high of 72F today and the wind was S@ 10-20 mph with gusts to 32 mph.
100 8.8-to gas station for coffee (I know Andrew;))
112 .5-station to wife's work
93.6 11.9-back home
88.0 8.8-to gas station (for the car this time:p)
124 16.2-station to wife's work
79.9 7.7-wife's work to Meijer for groceries
80.0 12.2-Meijer to my mom's
100 .7-back home
Average for today was 94.6 mpg
Mike: Next week I will actually be driving an Insight. I'll try to go easy on Sean.:p:D
Right Lane Cruiser 05-03-2010, 09:00 PM Easy nothing, Larry! You squeeze the max out of that car every time you get behind the wheel -- I won't be satisfied with anything less! :D You'll be the first Insight owner to have a 100+mpg lifetime average or I'll be very surprised indeed. :woot:
I finally got that missing aero-panel installed this evening. Yay! The car finally has all its parts in place! I've got a highway trip coming up a week from tomorrow so we'll see if it makes any difference. ;)

I don't know about 100 mpg lifetime. I think the trip home from Phoenix is going to be nothing short of brutal.(unless nobody tells me how to reset the lifetime before I get home;) , kidding) I did a bit of topographical research and found that I will be starting out at rough;y 1,500' and will relatively quickly reach as high as just shy of 8,000' before descending back down through New Mexico and Texas.
Die2self 05-03-2010, 09:36 PM home>school>work
- 22.2 / 13.6 miles (51F SE@7)
work>home
- 24.3 / 13.1 miles (74F W@6)
daily avg = 23.7 / 26.7 miles
tank is still on the F with 57.2 miles and ~23.3 MPG
Had to come home and trim a few little trees in our neighbors year that were blocking our garden from some sun;)
Also had to finish cutting down a big (6" diameter) branch that cracked off, but was still hanging on to the top of the Maple from last weeks strong winds.
Three bundles of branches and 1 trash can of leaves and cut up twigs. I wish I had a chipper, I could sure use some more wood chips :)
lxmike 05-04-2010, 05:30 AM Larry, yeah I just found out! use that wonderfull lil car and milk it for all you can buddy.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-04-2010, 06:17 AM Larry, keep the car long enough and that trip will be a small percentage of your total miles. I wouldn't worry about it too much but suspect you'll do better than you think you will. :)
I'm not totally sure it is the extra panel I installed last night but the car coasted further this morning than it typically does in (denser) cold air.
36F, 3mph headwind from the SE, overcast:
101.7mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 108.1mpg over 491.5mi with 14 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
PaleMelanesian 05-04-2010, 08:03 AM New record! 88.1 mpg / 10.7 miles home last night! :woot: That's a record for either direction, and this is the uphill trip.
82.3 this morning - Cool mornings are keeping these trips low for now.
The tank is up to 78.6 mpg / 838 miles and about 1/4 on the gauge. That's already my 5th best distance.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-04-2010, 09:09 AM Very nice, Andrew! I think you've got that kilotank in the bag now. Wanna try for 1020mi while you are at it? ;)
PaleMelanesian 05-04-2010, 09:18 AM I think 1024 would be more appropriate. ;) Or 1111? :D
Right Lane Cruiser 05-04-2010, 09:28 AM Well, if you want to go that far, take a look at the distance on my longest tank in the Elantra. ;)
Not too many gas powered cars break the 1K mark.
PaleMelanesian 05-04-2010, 09:31 AM I'd be out and pushing for that last 0.9 mile. ;)
calculated it. :( 88 mpg required to reach 1111. Not likely! I'll settle for a plain Kilo.
Chalupa102 05-04-2010, 12:51 PM Awesome numbers Andrew!
73F and cloudy with winds from the WSW @ 10mph
- 51.5mpg for 22.6 miles from home to the gym
- 47.4mpg for 9.1 miles from the gym to school
- 47.7mpg for 23.4 miles from school to home (had a small tailwind)
Day total: 49.2mpg
The tank is currently up to 47.9mpg over 279.8 miles with 7.2 gallons remaining.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-04-2010, 03:06 PM It's a wonder what warmer weather will do. :)
70F up to 75F (5F rise on my way home!), 15-21mph tailwind from the SE, sunny:
126.6mpg for 22.9mi (Work to home)
The tank is now back up to 108.8mpg over 514.7mi with 13 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 112.8mpg over 45.7mi
I still have a Church event to drive to tonight. It isn't my usual location so this could get interesting.
PaleMelanesian 05-04-2010, 03:09 PM Very nice, Sean!
diamondlarry 05-04-2010, 05:22 PM I only had one trip today as my wife drove to work. The temperature was 74F and the wind was SW@ 15-20 with gusts to 30 mph
123 9.9-to daughter's voice lessons
88.4 9.9-back home
Average for today was 102.9 mpg
lxmike 05-04-2010, 06:42 PM ok an uneventfull drive to work today but the end wasn't as good. reason why?: parking at my workplace sucks if your working anytime after 9 am. can't just park anywhere and if full have to see security about where to go. I couldn't find a spot so i saw a guard and asked and all i got was " i'm not working over here so just park where you want" :(
todays numbers
40.9- 7.2 mile to work and around the island
44.6- 6.4 mile home.
should have been 45 but guy in front slowed to let car is right lane merge and he turned right arggg!
Now for some "poking"
Sean better pick it up cause there might be a new "Sheriff in " Insight Town" soon! :p:p

- 23.5 / 13.4 miles (53F S@9 with a different route as they closed the one I normally use for widening during the summer to 5 lane, it needed it, it was part of Route 66)
work>home
- 23.4 / 13.1 miles (79F S@26 gusting to 33) nasty windsess
daily avg = 23.5 over 26.5 miles
tank is just above 7/8 with 83.7 miles and about 23.4 MPG
Had to mow the lawn and weed wack, so used up a little more juice.:(
Right Lane Cruiser 05-04-2010, 10:20 PM Mike, if you saw his routes you'd know I don't have a chance with my all city driving. :p
The trip to and from that other Church hurt the day average but at least I did manage to top 100mpg for the round trip (100.1mpg to be exact ). The way there was very windy and I did have it up over 108mpg for a while... but the last 4mi is a lot of hilly terrain with stopsigns/lights in very bad places. Oh well -- couldn't have done better in anything else!
69F down, 19mph cross/headwind from the WSW, overcast,
57F back, 6mph crosswind from the SSW, overcast:
101.5mpg for 16.4mi (Home to Church)
98.7mpg for 16.4mi (Church to home)
The tank is back down to 108.3mpg over 547.7mi with 12 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 107.1mpg over 78.7mi
Right Lane Cruiser 05-05-2010, 06:12 AM I seem to be stuck in a rut for morning numbers...
49F (45F windchill), 10-20mph cross/headwind from the SW, clear:
101.9mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 108.1mpg over 570.5mi with 12 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
diamondlarry 05-05-2010, 06:22 AM The temperature is 61F and the wind is WSW@ 5 mph. The average is at 95.2 for the day.
94.8 8.9

93.0 11.9
LinuxGold 05-05-2010, 06:26 AM 55.8 F degree temp

Trip to work today:
32.98 MPG @ 23.68 miles
PaleMelanesian 05-05-2010, 08:58 AM 86.4 home last night, 85 degrees.
This morning I had to detour to buy more "one more thing"s for a project at home.
74.3 mpg / 8.7 miles / 62 degrees, through a very busy school zone.
94.0 mpg / 4.6 from there to work, for a morning total of 80.1 / 13.4.
Tank is up to 78.8 / 862 miles. Projected LFL is 987 miles, some time early next week. (I just realized! I didn't fill up at all in April. :D)
Skwyre7 05-05-2010, 09:54 AM Hi, all. I've been MIA for a while and will likely continue to be so. I've simply been super busy the last couple of months, but have kept an eye on things via twitter. I've set a couple new personal records for regular trips. My current record for my morning commute is now 49.6 MPG (up from 49.2). I think 50+ is attainable. I also set a record for my "babysitter to home" run of 50.4 MPG (up from 49.0). I now have a complete trip to the babysitter's and back at 50+ MPG - during rush hour!
JusBringIt 05-05-2010, 11:59 AM If only my Avenger was only used for work. :p This is a different and temporary commute, however, 5.9miles @ 47.9mpg home for lunch, 5.9miles @ 48.0mpg back to work. I was over 50mpg on the trip home till I went past the driveway :o.
This is on the busiest street in the city too!
Right Lane Cruiser 05-05-2010, 12:33 PM Welcome back, Michael! We'll be here when you are able to put more time in. Good to see you are still making progress toward goals!
Ricardo, it's always something, isn't it? ;)
Right Lane Cruiser 05-05-2010, 01:59 PM Well that sure wasn't much fun. :p. Massive winds to drive through with cooler temps do not make for high mileage. This tank is suffering; when is all this wind going to stop?!?
51F, 22-32mph cross/headwind from the WSW, overcast:
101.2mpg for 19.8mi (Work to doctors' office)
The tank is all the way down to 107.8mpg over 590.3mi with 11 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 101.5mpg over 42.6mi
lxmike 05-05-2010, 02:33 PM well today wwent ok workwise and driving into work. comiong home was a different story. i'd get to a 4 way stop and play the old " who goes first now" game.
46.2- 7.2 mile to work. it's nice not worrying about anyoen at 4:30 am casue isee maybe one car my whole trip
42.1- 6.4 mile home.
tank sitting at 43.9- 93 miles and just dropped under the Full mark.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-05-2010, 02:45 PM A bit better on the way home but those winds are nasty!!
53F, 25-35mph wind from the W, intermittent rain:
105.5mpg for 4.1mi (Doctors' office to home)
The tank is steady at 107.8mpg over 594.5mi with 11 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 101.9mpg over 46.7mi
Die2self 05-05-2010, 09:26 PM home>school>work
- 22.9 / 12.8 miles (57F N@6)

The SG kept cutting out or the truck was just acting up, not wanting to run or stay running after the bump starts.
daily avg = 24.0 / 28.0 miles
tank is just under 7/8 with 111.7 miles and up to 23.5 MPG (calculated miles to E is setting at 523:p)
Right Lane Cruiser 05-06-2010, 06:18 AM Hi, Jason -- are you going to make that magic target distance on this tank? :D
I had a better run this morning that the other mornings of the week.
40F (36F windchill), 6mph tailwind from the NW, clear:
104.5mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 107.6mpg :ccry: over 617.2mi with 11 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
LinuxGold 05-06-2010, 06:40 AM 69 F, 9 MPH from the SSW, clear:
34.3 mpg for 23.67 mi (Home to work)
Tried to maintain 65 mph (36 instant mpg) approaching steep bridge, van came in too close, went down to 55 mph (41 instant mpg) and died down to 35 mph (28 instant mpg) before recovering downhill. :(
PaleMelanesian 05-06-2010, 08:23 AM The SG kept cutting out or the truck was just acting up, not wanting to run or stay running after the bump starts.
How's the battery voltage in a FAS? How's the alternator's output voltage when the engine is running? You should be seeing 12v, or at least high 11's at the end of a FAS, and something in the 14v range while running/charging.
I had the SG cut out one time this winter, when my voltage was down to 11.3 and I key-started at a light.
I was mad about something, and only got 77.6 mpg going home.
Better attitude this morning, and I got 83.0 mpg.
Tank is steady at 78.8, now up to 883 miles.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-06-2010, 08:26 AM Hey, Andrew... need some wind down your way? I'm tired of the stuff up here... ;)
PaleMelanesian 05-06-2010, 08:37 AM I forgot that part. 7-8 mph wind both times, tailwind going home, headwind this morning. I was doing really poorly to be down 5 mpg on the tailwind trip.
Nothing like your wind lately, though. Whew!
JusBringIt 05-06-2010, 08:42 AM 5.9mi home @ 44.9mpg yesterday
wet, light rain this morning, 5.9mi @ 37.0mpg. I think this is the worst I can do on this commute being that I timed the lights horribly.
Chalupa102 05-06-2010, 01:02 PM I set a new PR for the trip from school to home :). I must say that today the Stop & Shop truck near me was one of the best and courteous drivers that i have seen on the roads recently. He also seemed like he was hypermiling his semi using DWL and actually not speeding like most of the other ones do around here.
71F and partly cloudy with winds from the WSW @ 13mph
- 49.3mpg for 22.7 miles from home to the gym
- 46.2mpg for 9.1 miles from the gym to school
- 48.7mpg for 23.4 miles from school to home :woot:
Day total: 48.5mpg
The tank is up to 48.0mpg over 335.2 miles with 1/2 showing on the fuel gauge and 6 gallons remaining.
PaleMelanesian 05-06-2010, 01:18 PM I went out for errands at lunch. 90 degrees out there!
The last segment is nearly the same as from my daughter's school to work, where I've twice hit my (previous) record 105 mpg / 3.6 mi.
67.6 mpg / 3.2 miles - first store
39.0 / 0.5 miles - 2nd store
52.7 / 0.3 mi - 3rd store
129 mpg / 3.4 miles - back to work. :D :woot:
The tank is up to 78.9 / 891 miles. That's my 3rd best distance already.
Die2self 05-06-2010, 01:49 PM Andrew, I will take a look at the FAS numbers again.
They are in the 14's with the ICE on. The last time I monitored the VOLTS was in the Winter when it was dark and I was FAS'ing (not that often), but it was get down to 11.2-11.4 on long waits at lights when I would shut off.
I may have to charge the battery up here, but I think that the battery is over 5 years old from before we moved from Wisconson down to MO.
lxmike 05-06-2010, 01:50 PM You guys can have your wind and i'll keep my heat! :p It's nice going in at 4:30 am. I see maybe 1-2 cars my whole trip into work and can real take advantage of it.
45.6- 7.2 mile to work.
43.9- 6.4 mile home.
tank sitting at 43.9 106 miles.
again got stopped leaving the garage at work. usualy i slowly roll out but had to stop this time. I'm thinking or trying something new leaving work. instead of going to the light and having to sit there to make my left hand turn i was thinking to go right and make a u-turn a lil ways down. that way i'd keep moving, but it would add a lil distance to my trip home.
Right Lane Cruiser 05-06-2010, 03:07 PM Oh good grief, Andrew. :p :woot:
I was way WAY off my game today. No excuse for it and I can't justify it. :ccry: I was still in the 90's half way through my trip when I know I should have been at least up to 110mpg. :(
Oh well. I guess some days are like that. :o
54F, 5mph head/crosswind from the NNE, overcast:
109.9mpg for 22.9mi (Work to home)
The tank is steady at 107.6mpg over 640.2mi with 11 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.

Die2self 05-06-2010, 07:07 PM Ok voltage readings on the way home

Never got below 12.2 when FAS'ing or sitting at the lights with the ICE off (radio the only thing that is still powered on)
Home>school>work

work>home
- 23.6 / 13.2 miles (85F S@21 gusting to 28)
daily avg = 22.6 over 26.6 miles
tank is at 3/4 with 138.3 miles on it and down to ~23.3 now (ETA Miles to empty down to 518).
Sean I try my hardest every tank but things just come up that wack the dream away:(. We shall see this tank:o
PaleMelanesian 05-06-2010, 09:49 PM 77 mpg home. Should have been at least 3 mpg better, except for a hard uphill pulse into a red light. I know better!
Right Lane Cruiser 05-07-2010, 06:17 AM Not very nice weather to contend with this morning.
47F, 1mph head/crosswind from the ENE, raining:
102.4mpg for 22.8mi (Home to work)
The tank is steady at 107.6mpg over 663.0mi with 10 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
It is supposed to keep raining all day. :p

- 48.9mpg for 23.5 miles from home to school
The tank is steady at 48.0mpg over 358.7 miles with 5.6 gallons remaining.
PaleMelanesian 05-07-2010, 08:17 AM Linux, I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but if you note the mileage at the F fuel mark, the rest is very consistent. All the variation in fillups comes above the F mark.
After last nights poor 77 mpg, I got 80.5 this morning.
The tank is steady at 78.8 / 917 miles. That's my 2nd best already, and 17 to go for my best ever.
I have not seen the fuel light yet. I've done 50 past the light 5 times, and 75 past it once.
LinuxGold 05-07-2010, 09:40 AM Linux, I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but if you note the mileage at the F fuel mark, the rest is very consistent. All the variation in fillups comes above the F mark.
I agree, it is just a forecast, and as reliable as weatherman's predictions on news.
=)
Right Lane Cruiser 05-07-2010, 11:31 AM Well, I'm thoroughly grumpy now. :p
My wife called. She left her key in the ignition in ACC position all night. The car wouldn't start. So... I had to drive home. In the middle of rush hour. In the rain. With cold temps. Wondering if the battery had been damaged and what it was going to take to get it going again.
I get home with a dismal number and the wife doesn't want to wait at home while I leave the 12V on the charger (after I determined that was the only issue with the car)... she's got an important meeting to be at. So I went through the "relearn" procedure listed in the manual and got the car going again.
Now I'm chilled from the garage, tired (as usual), grumpy from traffic/weather/terrible mileage home/disruption in work day... Blah!
45F (43F windchill), 5mph headwind from the NE, raining:
85.0mpg for 22.8mi (Work to home :ccry:)
The tank is down a full mpg to 106.6mpg over 685.6mi with 9 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 93.0mpg over 45.3mi
Okay... now that is out of my system... It's FRIDAY!!! :D
LinuxGold 05-07-2010, 11:34 AM Sean,

LinuxGold: I'm glad I'm not in your shoes! I believe she trolls here and you are in danger of being blasted out of the CMPG universe! :Banane38:
PaleMelanesian 05-07-2010, 01:34 PM Sean - Down a whole mpg, with that many miles behind you?!!! That is awful!
My lunch trip was better.
77.1 mpg home with a stiff gusting headwind.
91.1 mpg back to work with a crosswind - it changed 90* from earlier.
The tank is up a tick to 78.9 / 938 miles. My best ever!
lxmike 05-07-2010, 01:57 PM ok today tried diff route home so i could possibly avoid stopp for a red light. It didn't go soi well casue so much traffic and i wasn't where the turnaround was.
45.3- 7.2 mile home to work
43.9- 7.2 mile work to home./ tank sitting at 44.1- 121 miles.
have just decided this will be my 500 mile tank attempt. only 379 more to go! :p
rhwinger 05-07-2010, 03:11 PM Well, no century numbers with my HCHII, but I had an interesting experience. My son Levi and I were heading to the store when we passed an intersection where the driver of a Lexus FSP was just itching to pullout into the street. After we passed the intersection the woman shoots out onto the road and rushes up behind us. She then abruptly passed us, exhuast pipes roaring. She whipped around in front of me and made the next right turn blasting off in full afterburner. We just continued along in hypermiler mode and I then made the same right turn, heading down the same road the FSP took.
After a few minutes, I spotted her in the left hand lane, stacked up in a line of cars behind the first traffic light. We just slid on past her in the left lane, which had a lot less cars in line. :Banane39: By the time the light tuned green, I was a half dozen cars in front of her. After awhile, the folks in the left lane passed me and she came barreling past us again. This process repeated itself for the next 3 traffic lights in about 6 miles of traffic. I was enjoying this little game immensely. ;)
Finaly she took an exit and she was all of 3 seconds in front of us when she hit the ramp. As she decended down the curved ramp, I'm thinking 60 - 70 mpg vs, what, 10 - 15 mpg, with less that 10 seconds difference in elapsed time? I thought this might be a teachable moment for Levi, who will be driving in about 2 years. I started to explain my observations of the FSP driver behavior, and Levi inturrupted me with some questions. I got so distracted in the explaination, *I* took a wrong turn and ended up taking a 6 mile detour to get back on track! :o
So much for saving fuel.
Chalupa102 05-07-2010, 03:30 PM Not so great conditions hurt my numbers today. 71F and sunny with winds from the WSW @ 18mph
- 42.3mpg for 11.7 miles from school to the pet store for cat food (had a pretty stong headwind and had to deal with rediculous traffic)
- 47.3mpg for 26.7 miles from pet store to home. Had a nice tailwind and should have had almost 49mpg, but got caught behind a bus playing stop and go for about 4 miles . When it was finally over, i had the long hill to climb to get to my house
Day total: 46.8mpg :ccry:
The tank dropped to 47.8mpg over 397.3 miles with 4.7 gallons remaining.
