I had an opportunity to view OTC school and see a nice presentation to SAE members of many of the class/work rooms. The students had many vehicles on display. I was nicely surprised by the supermileage vehicles that were there and had an oportunity to chat with a student about the vehile.
The comp approx 10 mile test track that averages 15 mph , 130 # driver and 4 wheels. Akron's vehicle I think weighed abit over 100 # and got 800 mpg in the comp. I think the winner got 1139 mpg for the test track. I liked the clutch to disengage the drive wheel, narrow 100 psi tires, and modified tiny engine. He said they go to about 25 mph and cut engine off.
I find most surprising that he said there was very little difference in the drivers ability , it was simple (accelerate to 25 and then coast) I believe his goal was to reach 1500 mpg, cool. :)
