Linuxgold refer me from other site. Thank to him.

My name is Dan, I am from Detroit, MI

I have 95 F250 I know you say bad choice but I need work truck so I am not worry about spend gas.

History about this truck.

Plow truck with automatic it have 4 speed with 5.8L

It have 4.10 which is horrible gear for this truck. It get 9 mpg no matter how you drive.:(

Now We did some work on it

Change rear axle to 3.55 Now I get 14 mpg in city and 17 mpg in highway:eek:

Add vacuum gauge it does help very much.

Replaced shifter since old one was broke which I can't turn off overdrive at 50 mph or below.

Air front tires to 60 psi and rear tires to 80 psi.

Will have alignment this week.

Remove that plow blade immediately. :D

From 9mpg to 14 mpg is a huge improvement! There is still room to improve more.:D

CleanMPG is all about improving mileage in whatever you drive. If you were just driving that truck back and forth like a passenger car, then it would be a bad choice. If you use it to plow snow and work, then it's perfect.

True once it snow we put plow when no snow we remove immediately.

Last time I left plow on it. I got 7.8 mpg that were plow snow too. That was huge improve from my friend who own exact truck I have he get 5 mpg.

Agree 14 mpg is much better on my gas budget plus I could cruise on highway easier.

I do use this truck for work mostly plus trip to deer camp which is 500 miles round trip. Let hope it reach 20 mpg. I got 16.8 mpg out Ford E350 with 15 passengers with ac.

95 F250

Your truck, according to fueleconomy.gov is (after the new EPA change):

City:11
Hwy 16
Combined 13

I recommend that you print out maybe 10 pages from this link (https://www.fueleconomy.gov/mpg/Fuel_Purchases.pdf). Put it in your truck, fill up gas, put in the STARTING odometer, reset total miles traveled from last refill and drive around normally (DO NOT HYPERMILE, it will show your normal driving habit before you hypermile).

When you return for a refill, make the record of it on the fuel purchase records.

Create your own mileage log on CleanMPG, that is your STARTING point to improve your hypermiling techniques.

I would also recommend that you have your tires aligned (very important) and PSI inflated to the max (never over the max). Tune up regularly and replace air filter when needed.

I also recommend Scan Gague II (seeing that you are using 1995 vehicle [anyone correct me if I am wrong]), and use it AFTER you done your NORMAL driving on your first log. Scan Gague II will help TREMENDOUSLY, you might even hit 24+ MPG!

A worker that saves gas on hypermiling is doing a good business.

Thank and I will print that one at college tonight.

I need to get on alignment now it pretty whack out. It eat front tires badly.

I been look for new tires. Now it have 235/85/16 it seem to be fat if compare to my Dad's 01 F250 245/75/16.

I haven't found 235/75/16 yet.

It isn't obdII Ford didn't put on F250 or up why they have heavy gvwr so it was exempt from EPA until 2001. :(

I was look at mpguio but think it won't work because this one is V8?

The MpGuino requires a VSS signal and an electronic injector signal -- both of which should be available on your truck.

One big thing I have trouble.

I couldn't find special front bumper that Ford doesn't put lot on trucks. Why I want because it have 3 holes in bumper which help wind drag to less and keep engine cooler on highway.

Only it came on Eddie Bauier F150 or Bronco or diesel F250 to F350.

Look this one white/pink F150 that what I want bumper

Ok I got to alignment shop so they reject when they saw 95 F250.:(

Well I decided to do and change front axle's gear from 4.10 to 3.55 to match rear axle.

I notice it lot drag when spin tires. If loose little on wheel bearing it spin easier but little shim loose.

I use Ford motorcraft grease but is there good grease for wheel bearing?

I been look for new tires. I do drive highway lot and plow snow. I been check Michellin tires. Are they good tires?

Ok my friend need me drive to Toledo that is 60 miles away. Well friend doesn't like drive slow so he rather go 80 mph since he is pay for gas in my F250.

I was surprise that I got 12.28 mpg for go 80 mph all way with 600 lb pound of engine and tools in flatbed. Before with 4.10 I was get 9 mpg at 55 mph. 3.55 is best investment I done to this truck.

I could got 16 if I stay 65 mph.

Yeah, gearing is the right thing to do, but you do have to do both axles the same or they'll fight each other in 4wd (and possibly cause more drag in the xfer case even in 2wd).

Next winter, make sure you try a block heater and a grill cover. They don't just help it warm up, but help you save fuel too. Just watch your temps if you're plowing or towing heavy.

Go easy on both pedals, keep your speeds down, and anticipate traffic & lights and you'll be up to mid-high teens in no time.

Front axle been disconnect. Still wait for guy to bring 3.55

Found college's auto shop who will do alignment on this truck.:woot:

Grill cover= NO WAY. It been overheat many times when drive with plow.

block heater I was consider add one but still look for good price.

For city here it impossible to drive that I want to. Too many people know where I live because my F250 with flatbed is rare here so I can't do that. Avoid brake on red light have improve me but require lot patient and time.

Patience, yes. That's one of the hardest things to learn. If the light's red, though, it's not costing you any time. You still have to wait until the green, whether you are stopped or still rolling at 5 mph.

Thanks to cash for clunkers, there should be a lot of trashed trucks at salvage yards to look through.

Makita (the tools?? nice tools, but not cheap)

Welcome. You might have noticed that everyone is welcome here-hybrids, small cars, large cars, mini pickups,1/2 ton pickups/SUVs, heavier duty work pickups like your 3/4 ton, and full on trucks that go cross country. Some forums that are mpg oriented are kinda picky/bitchy if you aren't driving a smallish car-not here
"Run what you brung" could be this forums motto.

12.8mpg at 80 mph?? Pretty good really considering the speed, and considering you are driving a tall wide brick with a V-8.

You are certainly on the right track with the regearing.
When you get new tires, you might want to see if any of them make some lower RR claims. There is a wide difference in how much gasoline various tires chew up. You have some limitations since your truck is used as a snow plow, so you need tires that give plenty of traction in ice and snow.I live outside New Orleans, so I don't know Jack about snow tires.

Keeping your speed down, and pulsing and gliding in city traffic are your best bets after the regearing. Many folks shut off the motor at redlights- it would save .7gallon per hour in my 1/2 ton Suburban 5.7 liter(350). It would save the same for your motor-maybe more since Chevy is better than Ford(just kidding,I couldn't resist a shot at a Ford truck).

I'm guessing you can get maybe 18-19 mpg eventually at 60mph on the hy.My Suburban gets an honest 21mpg on long 3000 mile interstate trips(with the cruise set to 62-68mph).It is a smaller, lighter 2wd vehicle, with car type tires,so your mpg will be a little less.

Luck
Charlie

F250 only weigh 6,500 pound it XL no ac or power seat or power window.

We did alignment and balance tires. WOW alignment was so bad that we end adjust all tie rods to get level.

Tires were way out balance no wonder at 80 mph it shake badly. Like you thought it bad tie rod or ball joints. Now it smooth and notice that I don't need push more gas to stay speed on highway.

I believe that turn off engine and turn on engine is actually hard on it. I turn off if I park or not moving for like min.

I been look for tires that help highway mpg and need traction for plow. I am not plan buy one until Fall so I am try get my money worth out that current tires I have now.

I used to have geo tracker. I would say bad choice for Detroit's highway. Their engine are underpower and regear is incorrect. 70 mph= 4,200 rpm while in Novi where everybody push us to 80-90 mph that was 5K rpm.

It got 18 mpg in winter and Summer it get 31 mpg. It was tired from city driving. NO matter how hard I drive it get 31 mpg by stay 55 mph and everybody were pass me that I could feel that my geo is ready to spin out from them.

I take it your truck has the speed density fuel system?

My F250 4wd with a 351w 35" mud terrains 4in of lift and a 5 speed manual could squeak 17mpg highway no problem. Usually 15 city with 4.30 gears. Biggest step in fuel economy improvement with that (its my tow pig) was to convert to mass air and sequential fuel injection. The fuel system in your truck if you have the SD setup and not a MAF will fire bank 1 injectors together so even though the cylinder didn't get ignition yet, fuel was squirted. This was ford's first attempt at fuel injector in the late 80's and they didn't really change much until 95-97 when these trucks got mass air.

My current driver is a 245K F350 crew long bed 4x4 with a 351w and a c6 3 speed auto without lockup. She has 3.55's front and rear with 35" mud tires. She gets 16 no matter what i do, but it has ported heads, a truck performer intake manifold. Full exhaust and a custom air intake setup for the mass air conversion.

If you are looking for the bumper with the two holes, its the powerstroke diesel bumper.I have one off a 96 stroke on my 94 F350.

I believe it isn't MAF but how hard to convert? Worth it?

My Uncle's 96 E350 weigh more but does better on gas compare to my F250. That mean he have MAF system?

F250 was build in 9/94 so it basically 95 on Title.

Was work on exhaust leak it amazing 2 giant holes. Cat converter were plugged bad.

Now it feel like something cause power and quick accelerator than before. I hope Reach 15-16 mpg.

Good new

I GOT 16 MPG :Banane36::woot: Those miles were CITY no highway. It been sit for 4 days so gas have vapor gas if I fill full and drive straight until empty I could gotten 18-20 mpg

itsacrazyasian

I have hard time believe that your F250 could get 17 mpg with oversized tires. Have you check your speedometer are correct? That mpg would have been 5-10.

Does that powerstroke bumper actually cool radiator and improve mpg from less drag?
