View Full Version : Week of April 19th - April 25th, 2010 (Nat Avg $2.87)
Right Lane Cruiser 04-19-2010, 06:18 AM We are fast approaching the end of April -- warmer weather is on its way!
40F, no wind, clear:
102.4mpg for 22.8mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 104.3mpg over 25.3mi
diamondlarry 04-19-2010, 08:34 AM Not so good today.:( We were at 34F this morning and I was only able to mange 73.8 mpg over 20.8 miles.
I'm going to be experimenting with higher average speeds as it's quite possible my next job may be in a location where I can't enjoy the low speeds I glide down to. I sometimes go as low as 15 in the middle of some of the country routes I travel. The above numbers were with P&G between 40 mph and 30-35 mph. I also anticipate more highway trips than usual due to my daughter becoming quite serious with a young man who lives in the Cincinnati, OH area.:) I think they live in the general area of Jud so I may have to stop in there. I don't even know when my next kilotank is going to be possible. I seem to also be having trouble finding the time to install my Enginer kit. Anybody want to come to IN and do some wiring/installing?;) I can pay.:)
PaleMelanesian 04-19-2010, 08:37 AM 81.0 this morning, cooler but still good.
Tank is at 77.8 / 494 miles and 3/4 on the gauge.
I need 82 mpg for the next 500 to reach 80 mpg / 1000 miles for the tank. I may have some extra capacity at the bottom of the tank, so it may not be quite such a stretch. Still, I'm aiming high.
lxmike 04-19-2010, 08:53 AM No driving for me today! After working a 7 day stretch It's time to recharge my "batteries" :p:D
Andrew how far do you go when you get down to E??
Road Trip To Indiana!! :Banane49:
LinuxGold 04-19-2010, 09:37 AM I am running my dad's Ford Ranger (auto) seriously LOW to E (been hypermiling on that truck, so far 330 miles and going...)
PaleMelanesian 04-19-2010, 10:21 AM Andrew how far do you go when you get down to E??
Not far. My car, and others of its generation, have an issue with low fuel pressure when the tank gets low. Just before the light comes on, it starts getting hard to start (and restart) the engine. After about 10 seconds, everything is fine again. I end up doing more early bump-starts, engine-on gliding, etc, just to keep the car running. You can imagine what that does to the mileage.
I've gone 75 past the warning light on a road trip, but it was seriously struggling at that point and I was wondering if I'd get home or run out first.
On my 935 tank, I went 45 past the warning light.
I'm projecting the warning light at 960-970 this time.
(once you get a reading at F and 1/2, predicting the rest is very consistent. All the variation in fillups happens above F)
Right Lane Cruiser 04-19-2010, 03:10 PM Larry, I'd love to give you a hand but I've not got the time on my hands. :p
Andrew, I didn't quite hit the competitive mark today. I'll try harder tomorrow. ;)
67F, 5mph cross/tailwind from the ESE, sunny:
117.7mpg for 23.3mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 110.2mpg over 48.6mi
Day Total: 109.5mpg over 46.1mi
lxmike 04-19-2010, 03:35 PM Sean, I'm Gonna Hold you to that buddy!
Andrew yeah I notice that too. It's real easy to loose mpg's, but so hard to get them back.
PaleMelanesian 04-19-2010, 03:43 PM Absolutely. Several reasons for that:
1. I'm already pushing near the max. Anything below that will drop the average, and I can't do much to make up for it, since I'm already maxed out. 75 plus any number of 80's will always average out below 80.
2. MPG is a flawed measurement. G/m is better. For an extreme example, 2 trips, 50 and 100 mpg, average out to 66.7, not 75. Reason being, the lower mpg trip uses more fuel, so affects the average more heavily. A low trip is even worse for the average than it first appears.
3. Psychology? When I'm on a roll, it's easier to get the big numbers. When it hasn't been so good lately, I struggle to get even "ok" numbers.
diamondlarry 04-19-2010, 04:47 PM Not a problem at all Sean. That would be quite a haul for you anyway.
Not too bad for today. We hit a high of 61F and the wind is NW@ 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 mph.
73.8 20.8-to wife's work and back
89.5 9.4-to wife's work average speed was 31 mph and direction was primarily north
97.4 3.7-wife's work to bedroom store average speed was 20 mph city traffic
83.3 15.0-store to home average speed was 27 mph direction was primarily south 60/40 highway city
Average for today was 80.8 mpg
So far, my experiments with higher average speeds are going well. My P&G range is usually closer to 30 mph-20 mph or lower. On segment 2, I was at 40 mph- 30-35 mph. Segment 3 was 30-40 depending on traffic.
Die2self 04-19-2010, 10:13 PM nice start to the week for MPG and is so much better for pollen this week too :D

lxmike 04-20-2010, 02:57 PM Ok today was a crazy day. Work wise that is! :p We been expecting the stae surveyers and they finaly showed up!! :woot: now they will be here for 4 days looking at EVERYTHING' that goes on in the whole building. then to top it off two people called out and a third tried to then decided to give her 2 weeks notice on the phone and was told that not acceptable.
now on to my driving: pretty normal drive to work. I tried leaving 5 minutes later to hopefully miss the top of the hour proplr that cut it close and it worked out pretty good didn't have anyone behbind me on the long road heading to work.
42.9- 7.2 mile to work
weather here is nice n sunny and i was hoping that i'd be able to at least match or even beat my morn run. No such luck.
42.3 6.2 mile home.
tank sitting at 362 miles under 1/4 now. fuel level at 16.3%.
Right Lane Cruiser 04-20-2010, 03:16 PM Well, that was fun. Too bad I had a headwind and obnoxious traffic -- I had it up over 130mpg for a while. At least this time the day average met the goal. ;)
71F, 6mph headwind from the NNW, sunny:
120.4mpg for 23.4mi (Work to home)
The tank is now up to 110.9mpg over 93.8mi

PaleMelanesian 04-20-2010, 03:18 PM That it did. ;)

39F (33F windchill), 9mph cross/tailwind from the NNE, clear:
106.6mpg for 22.8mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 109.9mpg over 117.6mi
Looks like the wind is going to intensify and shift to the NE. Blah.
Chalupa102 04-21-2010, 07:59 AM Back to school today after a long weekend doing some tough hiking on the Appalachian trail with my Boy Scout troop. Normally i ride my bicycle today, but i have a minor injury to my left knee from Monday. It's actually an old injury that i had a few years ago that's showing back up, so i probably won't be biking much this week unless it's feeling a bit better :(.
42F and sunny with no wind
- 50.1mpg for 23.5 miles from home to school
The tank is up to 47.3mpg over 413.4 miles with 4.3 gallons remaining.

Tank is steady at 77.8 / 556 miles.
LinuxGold 04-21-2010, 08:25 AM 32.83/124.1 Miles, dead still wind - went to friend's house in Magnolia DE last night
A learning experience on DWB, DWL and NICE-on Coasting .
Ordering MPGuino today.
29.2mpg/235 miles
All city, little A/C during hot days, mostly 5-10 mile drives on a cold engine. I guess that's pretty good considering the EPA estimates.
PaleMelanesian 04-21-2010, 01:55 PM Lunch trip to investigate a potential school for my girl in the fall. ~ 80 degrees
71.8 / 7.5 mi going there
92.1 / 7.2 coming back (lower elevation)
That's enough to bump the tank up a tenth to 77.9 / 570 miles. Still aiming for 80 / 1000.

Tank sitting at 375 mile- 40.8 mpg.
Right Lane Cruiser 04-21-2010, 07:49 PM I didn't do nearly as well today as yesterday, but the lunch with a good friend was worth it. It was a short route but full of unpredictable (curvy/hilly roads obstructing view) lights at close intervals. I had to take the same route back out and then run into a wind... and I was late for an appointment so I had to drive faster than I wanted to.
Some days are like that!
49F, 12-17mph crosswind from the NE, sunny:
65.8mpg for 2.4mi (Work to restaurant :o)
57F, 13-16mph headwind from the NNE, sunny:

The tank is all the way down to 107.6mpg over 146.4mi
Day Total: 101.7mpg over 51.6mi
Ouch. :o
Die2self 04-21-2010, 08:28 PM Andrew, when you have that many miles on the tank every 0.1 MPG is a hard fought battle.
I'm pulling for you, we are all in this together :D
home>school>work (I was able to breath all day, allergies not that bad today:Banane44:)
- 22.9 / 13.5 miles (54F SE@5)

Right Lane Cruiser 04-22-2010, 06:15 AM Chilly this morning. I thought we were done with this weather for a while?
30F, no wind, clear:

The tank is now down to 106.9mpg over 169.2mi
diamondlarry 04-22-2010, 07:54 AM I had 41F when I started out around 6:00am EST and the FCD was reporting 39F by the time I got back home just after 7:00. The winds have been calm. I'm at 89.4 mpg for the day but I think I may be done driving for the day in the Prius. My wife's Saturn is getting a bit thirsty so I'll be driving it the rest of the day.
PaleMelanesian 04-22-2010, 08:36 AM Thanks, Jason. Your 0.1 is great as well.
I gained another 0.1 going home, but lost it this morning. Had to take a detour for dog food.
82.1 / 10.6 mi going home. Tank up to 78.0.
75.0 / 11.6 mi this morning. Tank back down to 77.9 / 593 miles.

- 49.8mpg for 23.5 miles from home to school
- 47.7mpg for 23.4 miles for the trip back home
Day total: 48.7mpg
The tank is now up to 47.4mpg over 483.9 miles with 2.8 gallons remaining. I'm planning to fill up tomorrow on the way to school.
PaleMelanesian 04-22-2010, 12:58 PM When's that 50 tank coming, Dan?
I went to a lunch event at my daughter's school.
60.7 / 3.9 miles there
96.3 / 3.8 back. This route is where I've done my best-ever 105 mpg segment. I stopped to check a gas station for ethanol warning stickers. None!
no change in the tank reading - still 77.9.
Chalupa102 04-22-2010, 03:06 PM When's that 50 tank coming, Dan?
Hopefully soon Andrew. I've already hit my goal of 45mpg, so now it's time to aim for 50.
PaleMelanesian 04-22-2010, 03:09 PM Looks like you'll be able to hit the 500 mark at the same time.
lxmike 04-22-2010, 05:19 PM just a regular day today nothing "wild" to report
43.7- 6.1 mile to work
45.9- 5.3 mile home.
tank up a notch to 41 now 387 miles.
Right Lane Cruiser 04-22-2010, 05:42 PM Still didn't hit the mark with today's average but the traffic was really bad.

116.5mpg for 23.4mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 107.8mpg over 192.7mi
Day Total: 109.0mpg over 46.2mi
Die2self 04-22-2010, 09:22 PM Up another 0.1 ;)
Home>school>Work
- 23.3 / 13.5 miles (57F E@7 with damp roads from the rain earlier in the night)
work>home
- 26.4 / 13.2 miles (76F S@14 Gusting to 21) (FAS'ing more, can you tell;))
daily avg - 24.8 / 26.8 miles
tank is up to 23.3 with 301.9 miles on the ODO and just under 3/8 of a tank left.
Right Lane Cruiser 04-23-2010, 06:09 AM Man... it seemed like everyone on the road was driving specifically to make me stop this morning. :(
Oh well. At least I equaled yesterday morning's number.
38F, 2mph head/crosswind from the E, clear:
102.4mpg for 22.8mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 107.3mpg over 215.5mi
PaleMelanesian 04-23-2010, 07:51 AM I've not had a "normal" driving day all week. It's been detours and errands everywhere!
71.5 / 4.3 miles - work to store
77.7 / 5.9 - to another store
82.1 / 4.8 - to a gathering at a friend's house
76.5 / 8.2 - home
(all of that was with a front seat full of dog food, a trunk full of mulch, 3 segments with tomato plants on board and one segment with child #1 on board. If only I had a hatch, I would have hauled twice as much mulch instead of needing a second trip later.)
83.2 / 10.5 this morning in a light drizzle.
The tank is holding steady at 77.9 / 634 miles. My predictions showed 664 at the 1/2 mark, and it looks like that's about right.
Chalupa102 04-23-2010, 07:57 AM Got gas on the way to school this morning. 44F and sunny with winds from the N @ 7mph
- 45.3mpg for 6.9 miles from home to the gas station
The tank fill up ended up being 48.1mpg over 490.9 miles
- 50.5mpg for 16.6 miles from the gas station to school
The tank is full at 50.5mpg over 16.6 miles.
PaleMelanesian 04-23-2010, 08:02 AM Go get that 50/500! :woot:
Right Lane Cruiser 04-23-2010, 03:11 PM I didn't quite hit the mark today, but close. :)
69F, 16mph tail/crosswind from the SE, mostly cloudy:
121.4mpg for 23.4mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 108.5mpg over 238.9mi
Day Total: 111.1mpg over 46.2mi
I think I'm going to have to phase out use of my FAS button in the afternoons. I dealt with extra drag from the car riding with a SOC of 18 bars all the way home and couldn't get it to charge to 19 because of the button (which is more demanding than key FAS). It isn't much, but you can definitely tell the car wants to siphon off energy when the SOC isn't at least 19 of 20 bars. :( :p
lxmike 04-23-2010, 04:04 PM Happy Friday! To those lucky ones that are off this weeked. I am working tomorrow but it's an early shift 5- 1:30 (ugg) but then i'll be free and have sunday off and don't have to be in till monday at 11 so almost like 2 days off hour wise :D
Low fuel light is on for good now. SG showing 9.76 gas used which is .11 over what i used last tank. gonna get my lil gas can out and stop and pickup a galon or 2 to carry along in case. I know i'll chicken out better to have and not need than need and not have!
todays numbers
44.4- 7.2 miles to work.
43.2- 6.2 mile home.
tank sitting at 401 mile- 41.1 mpg fuel % -10.3
Continued my streak of 400 mile tanks :)
Chalupa102 04-23-2010, 09:22 PM From earlier today: 66F and sunny with winds from the NNW @ 10mph
- 41.6mpg for 8.0 miles from school to the gym
- 43.6mpg for 9.1 miles from the gym back to school
- 46.9mpg for 23.3 miles from school to home with some crosswinds
Day total: 46.4mpg
The tank is at 46.5mpg over 57.3 miles with 11.8 gallons remaining.
alvaro84 04-25-2010, 02:52 AM New week, new tank.
Finally I could broke the 3l/100km limit again, without heavy P&G - may be because the rain-free weather, and the longer trips: I had a bunch of the usual ways to the town and back, but came back so quickly the engine could not cool down "properly" :D
And visited our local SakuraCon at Budapest (more cosplay freak images of me may come - imagine me as a useless little bunny :D :D :D) - it's a 2*60km trip.
Final result for this tank is 2.95l/100km, almost 80mpg :D
Right Lane Cruiser 04-25-2010, 09:28 PM Nice work, guys!!
I have to say, I really like my wife's car. I took it for a trip to the bank this evening and discovered something kinda interesting about the car. It was cold so it started the engine up as I was backing out of the garage. The backup sensor was going nuts (I think one of the radar sensors got dirt on its cover) so I stopped (still in reverse on the driveway) to see if it would quit. The engine turned off when I did this, and it didn't turn on again for quite some time. I used EV mode out of the neighborhood and part way to the bank before forcing the engine on for a pulse... and then it wouldn't turn off again because it was in warm up mode. Once it warmed up sufficiently, I got full hybrid functionality again as expected but that initial cancel of the warm up was a nice surprise! Has anyone else noted this behavior?
At any rate, 50F, 13-19mph wind from the N, dark but clear:
73.1mpg for 4.5mi (Home to bank ATM and back)
Not bad for a warm up hit and headlights on the entire way! :D:thumbs_up:
