Hello to all MiHG members and friends,
After the misstep of our postponed MiHG Meet of March 20 (which was cold and snowy) we look forward to the first Meet of 2010 with the earlier than usual warm weather. As you are now beginning to see better mileage with the rising temperatures, this Meet will give you a great opportunity to refresh your Drive $mart skills, talk about what’s on your mind, learn about some volunteer opportunities to celebrate Earth Day and learn about the what is happening in the automotive world of EV’s (electric vehicles).
Our friend, MiHG member and EV guru, Ben Nelson, will be giving a segment on what’s happening in the EV area of the auto industry in “EV’s Taking Charge”. Ben’s expertise is the home grown type having built/remodeled or owned a 1995 Chevy S10 EV, a 1995 Geo Metro EV called the “Electro-Metro”, a 1981 Kawasaki K2440 motorcycle EV and an “Electrak” riding lawnmower. He is the founder of the Wisconsin Alternative Auto group and a co-founder of the Milwaukee Electric Car Club and besides being a hands on mechanic, Ben is a teacher and presenter of EV technology with various schools and organizations in the area. Here are some links about Ben and his projects:

Our Milwaukee Hybrid Group has become a local, regional and national organization that has led the way in many areas and continues to be a sought after group at Earth Day events since our 1st Meet in 2006. This year we have accepted 6 invitations to celebrate Earth Day celebrations, first inspired by our own Sen. Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1971. This is a listing of where MiHG members will be present for earth Day 2010:
Saturday, April 17th at the Outpost Natural Foods in Wauwatosa from 10-2
Wednesday, April 21st at the Franklin Public Library from 10-7
Friday, April 23rd at the 5th Annual Green Vehicles Workshop at the downtown campus of MATC from 8-4
Saturday, April 24th at the First Annual Green Vehicles Fair at the south campus of MATC (a PYR$ event) from 10-2
Saturday, April 24th at the Greener Oconomowoc Fair at the Oconomowoc High School from 11-3
Saturday, May 1st at the first Spring Green Fair at Alverno College from 9-5
Additional details and sign ups will be discussed at this Meet, however if you cannot attend and still would be interested in sharing as much of your time at an event, feel free to send me an email. These events are a great opportunity to share your experience with hybrids and to show how D$A can improve anyone’s mileage.
Lastly we’ll have our MiHG Open Forum again at this Meet. We usually don’t have time at other Meets to exchange ideas, ask questions, and seek answers on any subject that is important to you. It could be on transportation issues, specific vehicle questions on equipment or accessories, warm weather driving tips, what’s coming up the driveway or even broader environmental issues. We could also discuss the direction that you would like to see the MiHG go in 2010. This segment will allow each one of us to be the teacher and the student as we learn from each other.
This MiHG Meet will have new friends attending for the 1st time since the Milwaukee Auto Show. At the Show we encouraged individuals and families to bring their current vehicles and invite their friends, associates and neighbors to receive our free Drive $mart training. We’re sure that they’ll be inspired by our Round Robin session as they hear the stories of our members that have taken the steps to improve their fuel mileage by 10, 20, 30 and even 40 % above their vehicle EPA ratings. Each of you are the proof that D$A works with any vehicle, any time and in any conditions. This is our opportunity to make believers out of drivers that may not think those improvements are possible. Justin Fons, two time World Fuel Economy Record holder, will be on hand for this behind the wheel D$A training.
And now, finally, the specifics of this first MiHG Meet of 2010:
For our first timers, here’s the way things generally work at a meet. We begin to gather in the Library parking lot about 9:15am to schmooze and show off our vehicles. If the weather is good, we’ll begin check-in and our VTP’s (Vehicle Tire Pressures) at that time. At 10:00am we’ll begin to setup our room and by 10:20 we should be set to begin our introduction round robin. We’ll have a short session and then take a short break for snacks and item sales. We’ll then have our main session and offer some updates, reviews, news, short subjects and door prizes and then break for lunch about 12:00 pm. After our potluck lunch, we’ll begin our Drive $mart sessions about 12:30 pm and begin cleanup. Beverages and utensils will be supplied but we encourage all attending to bring some food to share. (Main dishes are greatly appreciated). Be prepared to be gracious, with the understanding that the agenda usually does not follow the timeline.
