View Full Version : Best Fill-up Technique?

Hi all--

Going to pick up my HCHII this weekend, as some of you are aware. Before I get started, though, I want to get ready to keep nice and accurate FE stats, which got me to wondering -- what is the best method of ensuring accurate fill-ups? I know there's a slight error in most new HCHII's and I'd like to keep better track.

Should I stop at the first click, to I fill it all the way up the neck of the filler, or something in between?

Because of the weird fuel bladder thingy, my wife's Prius is a pain to fill accurately and as a result we've yet to get a good calculated FE that I'm confident in. I know the Civic has a standard fuel tank so that shouldn't be an issue. In my Audi, I occasionally get a tank back pressure problem that makes it difficult to know exactly when the tank is full, so I've come not to always trust the click-off nozzles.

Any tips? --RN

Here is a helpful thread. I stuck to "first click".

Just do first click. It is easiest. As long as you document the miles and the amount of fuel used then any errors will be minimized over time. If you put in a little more fuel one time then you will get poorer mileage on the next tank, but the tank after will come out higher. It will all even out.

1st click works for me. I even try to fuel at the same pump at a particular gas station on the way home to minimize any inconsistancies?

if you can try to fill up at the same gas station and better yet same pump! i notice they always have cheapest prices at a certain day/time so find what routine works best for ya.
