View Full Version : Some days it doesn't pay to go to work.

As I was leaving the house to go to work today it started snowing, it was beautiful, little snowflakes just falling outta the sky.

Long story short; two hours later I'm going down this big, long, steep V shaped road and there is this SUV in front of me, he's going a bit too fast with the now slippery snow covering the road. There is a Nissan Titan coming down the road from the other direction toward us.

The SUV in front of me taps his brakes to slow down before he gets to the bottom of the hill and loses control, the SUV fishtails to the right (rear to the right, headlights to the left) then fishtails to the left, then the right and again back to the left, the Nissan had nowhere to go but towards the wood line.

When the SUV hit the drivers side of the Titan doing about 35-40mph he hit the Titan so hard that it broke the drivers side front wheel completely off of the Titan. The Titan was stopped by a tree. The SUV spun counterclockwise doing a 720 degree turn before stopping off the road in the right lane.

I seen the SUV lose traction and start his fishtails, I let off the gas pedal and was looking for an out. About the second that they hit I was only 30-40 feet behind the SUV, They hit at the bottom of the V. Parts started flying, bumper covers, mirrors, a wheel. I pulled the parking brake and got my car sideways to put most of the Metro between me and the two trucks, thinking I'm going to slide right into the middle of this mess, I got the Metro straightened out and slide into the grass of the right lane, coming to a stop about 4 feet from a 15ft embankment that drops off into a small creek. Not a scratch on my car. :woot:

I see the Titan driver run over to the SUV and ask if everyone is OK, I get out of my car and he asks me how I'm doing. I'm physically fine but a bit shaky, I tell him I'm fine. He says his wife is in the truck and is 6 months pregnant. She is ok too. I move the tire/wheel and front axle of his truck out of the road and we watch for cars coming down the hill. We weren't in a safe place for passing traffic.

seftonm you may remember this road when you were here last May, it's the one I took you down and up and turned around when you rode with me? It's a lot more fun with snow.

I only talked to the Titan driver because the runaway SUV was 75-80 feet from the Titan, that's how far it slid after the accident. We talked for a few minutes until the ambulances and fire engines showed up, one of the fire engines parked just behind my car in the right lane which blocked any cars from sliding into my car and knocking it off the edge into the creek below.

I got the pizzas and wings outta of the car and gave them to the Titan driver for him and his wife who was talking to the EMTs. I figured they would appreciate the gesture. I couldn't get my car outta the grass and didn't want to lose more ground towards the edge so I started walking up the hill and called the store. Told them to send another driver with a remake to my delivery, mine didn't make it. ;) Another driver picked me up at the top of the hill, it's a really big hill. I got back to the store and worked for about 2 hours inside. I took a delivery on foot to a hotel beside us, this made my take for the night about $20 and some change.

Later my managers son came to the store in his Chevy 4x4 crewcab to take her home, I asked him if he minded pulling me out of the grass, he said sure.

You couldn't even see my white car off the road, the snow had covered it completely. As we get out, a tow truck pulls in front of the Chevy. We get the chain hooked up to my tow point and wrapped around his hitch when a State Trooper flashes lights and pulls up to us. He says "Your not going to pull that car outta there with this truck." Managers son drops the chain off the hitch and pulls off. :eyebrow:

I'm respectful but firmly set on getting my car, we go back and forth, I need my car, he doesn't want to see us get hit, I can do this safely, he doesn't want to come back here to do another accident report, I live 20 miles away, he says to come back tomorrow, I asked if he would pull in front of us with his lights on so traffic would stop, he says he had to go to another accident and didn't have time to mess with me (he obviously did have some time to mess with me). He pulls up to the tow truck driver who had moved past us. They talk and laugh...I walk up to his car when he offers what I was going to ask if I could do anyway. If the tow truck will move in front of the Chevy with his lights on and block traffic I could pull my car out with the Chevy. I thanked him for his understanding.

Back on the chain and out in 20 seconds!!! I give managers son all my bills and change and tell him thanks and to make sure I get up this steep hill before he heads home. I get to the gas station and find no damage and begin uncovering my car from the snow. Managers son pulls up and says man that trooper sure was an ______, we talk about the trooper.

I took the long way home by interstate and highway not wanting to chance getting stuck on any back roads.

I think I'll stay home tomorrow. Take for the day, 4 hours of minimum wage. Some days it' doesn't pay to go to work. But the snow is pretty. :D - Dale

Well on the bright side, at least your car is OK.

There were a lot of bright sides,

1. I didn't get a ticket from the trooper who threatened to give me one for the previous accident which I didn't contribute to. He said if he came back and I caused an accident he would give me one for driving too fast for road conditions for the previous incident plus whatever he could think of for this hypothetical one.

2. I arrived there seconds before the tow truck and trooper. Even though I was clearly off the road they were probably going to tow my car had I not beat them there first. At one point I asked him directly "Your not telling me it's illegal for me to pull my car with this truck, are you?" His response was "Listen to what I'm saying to you, I don't want to come back here and have to do another accident..." Sometimes you've gotta listen to what they are not saying to hear the truth.

3. I got a phone call from the titan drivers mother-in-law, wanting to get my personal info as a witness for insurance purposes and she thanked me for feeding her daughter and them.

4. A delivery driver from a local sushi restaurant called and asked if that was my car and offered to pull it with a Denali, I thanked him but declined.

5. My buddy in Charlotte offered to get off work and come and get me. I thanked him too and declined.

6. The delivery guy who picked me up on top of the hill, offered to pull me out with his van. It's nice to know you have friends when you need them.

7. No one got hurt as far as I know.

8. I have a new delivery story.

9. My manager will totally understand why I'm not coming in tomorrow.

10. I did make $29.20 in minimum wage.

11. My mileage is right on track for another 50mpg if I can wait for the snow to melt some.

12. I got home early, I usually wouldn't get home until 2AM.

I prefer to embrace the bright side of things. :D - Dale

And that is why I'd rather drive through a blizzard in the North East, than one inch of snow in North Carolina ;). Glad you're OK Dale. If you ever do get that Prius, VSC and ABS absolutely kick a$$ for a situation like that.

I've had bad days- I substitute teach in public schools Jefferson Parish(suburb of NOLA) making $31/4 hours or $62/8 hours.Sometimes the students are "challenging"-mostly ok however.I actually work for Kelly Services.

HOWEVER MY WORST DAY WAS NO WHERE NEAR AS BAD AS YOUr DAY!!The A H COP, nearly in a wreck that would have injured you and totaled the Metro, very little net pay-that was a BAD DAY!

Glad all is well.It is good you have lots of friends; that is usually an indication of who you are.
Good luck
Charlie
