the guy across the street from us has often become JERK of the day in my book by idling his suburban to warm it up in the morning. he gets several trophies for that.

tonight, however, he has outdone himself. we have been getting snow all day, and it's continuing through tomorrow. lots of snow.

i saw lights outside, and when i looked, there is his suburban sitting in the street running, with the lights on....while he has been clearing his driveway. it's been close to an hour.

'nuf said. jerk.

1 hour???? A Suburban uses .7 gallons/hr-who wastes $2 for what?? Is he doing it just to heat the vehicle??

My 2004 Elantra manual says explicitly "Do NOT idle the engine for more than 10 minutes or damage may occur." I don't believe it as true, but I did find it interesting that it says not to let it idle.

I complained to my significant other and he just said he has the right to drive what he wants, and waste what he wants. he didn't like that he did it, but says we can't control what he does...

I agree. I can only adjust my own behavior, I don't always do it to my the best of my abilities and I have the most to benefit from my improvements. Yet I often fall short of my goals. I can't expect more from others.

Since he is your neighbor, why not help him clear the driveway, you would cut his fuel consumption in half, you would certainly strengthen your relationship with this neighbor which might go a long way in building a friendship, where with time you may be able to discuss without prejudice hypermiling, he would be more receptive to your intelligent advice if he was getting it from a friend whom he respected. -Dale

Dale, i am 63, my significant other is 74. we both have artificial knees. the guy across the street is a kid (at least in comparison) and has a snow blower.......plus several cars. he doesn't need my help, nor are we in a position to offer him any. and, as you well know, talking to a suburban (and mustang) owner about hypermiling is like selling ice to eskimos.

Laurie, be careful of Suburban bashing-ha,ha. My 98 can get an honest 18 city(actually averages more like 15 when I'm the only driver, but my wife absolutely tanks my tanks when she drives it) and it gets an honest 21 mpg hy-no matter who drives.

I bet your affluent neighbor has a somewhat newer one-the 2002's are 1 mpg up on mine, and the 2007's are 3mpg up on mine.He could get an honest 20 mpg city and 24 hy if he has a late model.

Safe bet he doesn't, since he throws .7 gph down the drain just because he is a sissy that can't take a little cold-and he has 4x4 -a nice option in the great white north..
I have some need for my FSP-6-7 pets(cats/dogs) and 3 adults to evac.

Seriously, is there an anti-ideling ordance in Plymouth?

Last year it was illegal for semis to idel like this in Dallas and service stations had to provide electrical outlets.

It is fairly common in my neighborhood for people to shovel their driveway, or snowblower their driveway while their cars/trucks are running. Does it bother me, yes. Can I do anything about it, no. I just can hope that someday they care more about the environment and air quality issues.
Right now the man across the street is shoveling his driveway while his pickup truck is running. What are you going to do?
In Pennsylvania diesel trucks and buses over 5 tons cannot idle for more than 5 minutes, with a few exceptions. Parking lots, where trucks sometimes park, are required by law to post signs stating not to idle your diesel truck.
