View Full Version : Week of February 8th - February 14th, 2010 (Nat Avg $2.66)
Right Lane Cruiser 02-08-2010, 06:21 AM Another blustery week with plenty of snow here. :p
23F (12F windchill), 10mph head/crosswind from the E, snowing and unplowed roads:
69.0mpg for 22.8mi (Home to work)
The tank is back down to 75.6mpg over 419.7mi with 11 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
diamondlarry 02-08-2010, 07:01 AM Kind of a cold day here. At least the wind is kind since it's E@ <5 mph. The temperature was 16F. I had 61.1 mpg over 19.3 miles. I just got word yesterday that my Enginer kits are ready to ship and I need to contact the trucking company for delivery details. Sounds like I may be busy this month. :)
PaleMelanesian 02-08-2010, 08:26 AM 67.1 mpg this morning, with the incoming rain just starting to sprinkle.
It was a busy weekend, multiple Lowes trips, for "just one more thing", or rather, "a bunch more things". Driving with LOAD will hurt your mpg. For the record, with a fold-down seat, you can fit 16 2x4's in a civic. Can't do that in an HCH.
Tank is down from 68.2 to 67.5.
jcp123 02-08-2010, 01:24 PM Well, this tank is going to suck...
Right Lane Cruiser 02-08-2010, 02:43 PM Tell me about it, JCP. I had a hard time getting up my driveway when I got home. :p
26F (14F windchill), 14mph cross/tailwind from the E, snowing:
70.9mpg for 22.9mi (Work to home... was 74.3mpg before the driveway )
The tank is down to 74.4mpg over 442.6mi with 11 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 70.0mpg for 45.7mi
Chalupa102 02-08-2010, 04:01 PM No numbers cuz i rode the bicycle to school and back, so that means i didn't have to get gas today. I am definitely gonna have to fill up tomorrow before i head out to school though.
Die2self 02-08-2010, 06:24 PM school > work
- 18.1 / 13.6 miles (32F SW@3 with light snow and wet roads)
work > home
- 20.5 / 13.3 miles (34F N@14 with light snow and wet roads)
daily avg = 19.3 / 26.9 miles
tanks ~19.5 over 138.4 miles (gauge is just under 6/8)
lxmike 02-08-2010, 07:38 PM 39.9 7.2 mile to work. usualy is 7.1 but couldn't find a park spot in my usual places so i had to circle round.
39.1 5.1 miles home.
jcp123 02-08-2010, 09:12 PM Tell me about it, JCP.
I had some unusually justifiable hard driving yesterday which will wreak some total havoc on my tank...
Right Lane Cruiser 02-09-2010, 06:13 AM Another unplowed journey to work today. :p
21F (10F windchill), 10mph cross/tailwind from the the NNE, flurries and snowy/slushy roads:
70.2mpg for 22.8mi (Home to work)
The tank is back up to 75.2mpg over 465.5mi with 10 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
PaleMelanesian 02-09-2010, 07:50 AM 54.1 mpg () on the way home, in the rain, with a 20 mph headwind as a cold front blew through.
64.4 mpg this morning. The overnight freeze encased my car in ice, and there was frost on the inside of the windows. I'm amazed at how well I did in the conditions - just shy of a record for 29 degree temperatures.
The tank is down, again, to 67.0 and 450 miles. Just above half on the gauge.
Right Lane Cruiser 02-09-2010, 08:08 AM Nice work, Andrew!
PaleMelanesian 02-09-2010, 08:17 AM Thanks! I just realized why my morning was so good - last night's headwind is now a tailwind.
Taliesin 02-09-2010, 10:34 AM I don't even want to think about this tank.
Right after I filled up, the truck went in the shop. So idling and the "test drives" killed it to begin with.
On top of that, windy, cold, and snow. Including a 25 mph headwind last night that didn't turn into a tailwind this morning.
And then my truck was stuck in my drive this morning. It took me half an hour to get it out, which made me late. It wouldn't have been as bad, but that half hour also means I end up in a half mile line of vehicles waiting to get onto the base. Steady speed isn't even idle in 1st gear going uphill. Waiting in that line for 15 minutes is a killer, and I had to wait in it yesterday too.
Chalupa102 02-09-2010, 12:39 PM Good day today. 31F with very little wind.
- 40.2mpg for 6.9 miles from home to the gas station. Tank fill up was 41.8mpg.
- 47.1mpg for 15.7 miles from gas station to the gym.
- 39.3mpg for 6.1 miles from the gym to school :). Definitely happy about the results cuz it's a short route with A LOT of stop lights.
- 44.1mpg for 23.3 miles from school to home.
The tank is currently at 44.3mpg. Tomorrow the Northeast is supposed to get hit with heavy snow. That should be fun .
PaleMelanesian 02-09-2010, 01:31 PM lunch errands. ~40F, 15 mph winds gusting to 25
52.8 / 5.1 mi, headwind
72.4 / 3.2 mi, tailwind
67.2 / 2.9 mi, tailwind
That brings the tank down, again, to 66.8 / 461 miles.
Right Lane Cruiser 02-09-2010, 02:28 PM 25F (12F windchill), 14-18mph head/crosswind from the N, overcast:
75.6mpg for 22.7mi (Work to home with a stop on the street so I could clear the driveway)
The tank is steady at 75.2mpg over 488.2mi with 9 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 72.8mpg over 45.5mi
melinuxfool 02-09-2010, 04:42 PM Warming up today. Was 40 degrees for my trip home. I got 25.1 mpg for that trip. Filled up tonight to save a buck on a car wash while the temperature is finally above freezing. Would you believe, there was a pickup truck underneath all that dirt? ;)
Average for this tank, 22.9 calculated mpg (159 miles and 6.942 gallons). The benefits of hypermiling are more apparent in warmer weather as you can actually see trips (like mine today) that are significantly better than the EPA ratings.
lxmike 02-09-2010, 05:08 PM 40.X on 7.1 mile drine into work today.
my trip home had 2 stops. First was at bank to cash check from my brother, then stopp to get my taxes done. Weather was wind and raint coming home or i would have just came straight home and biked to the tax office.
35 mpg, 2 mile from work to bank.
42.1 mpg 2 miles from bank to tax office.
28.5 from tax office to home. office is in shopping center and coming out i could see light was green at intersection and i made the choice to jump out or get stuck behind a line of cars so i did. Wrong choice Mike!
tank down to 38.9 now Forgot to check the miles and is rainy now so will update next time.
Die2self 02-09-2010, 06:14 PM school > work
- 18.0 / 13.7 miles (14F W@7) had to break the ice holding my doors closed:eek:
work > home
- 18.9 / 13.2 miles (27F NW@14-22)
Need to let the block heater run a little longer in this colder mornings:o
daily avg = 18.4 over 26.9 miles
tank is down ~19.4 with 165.3 miles and the gauge is on the 5/8 line
Right Lane Cruiser 02-10-2010, 06:14 AM Man, what a difference clear roads make! Considerably colder this morning but I easily surpassed the last couple of morning commute numbers.
5F (-6F windchill), 6mph tailwind from the NW, clear:
75.2mpg for 22.8mi (Home to work)
The tank is steady at 75.2mpg over 511.0mi with 8 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
PaleMelanesian 02-10-2010, 09:08 AM 59.4 home last night, fighting that north wind.
65.3 this morning, no wind at all. There was light frost, but not a big deal.
Tank is down again, to 66.5 mpg / 483 miles and just above 1/2.
Right Lane Cruiser 02-10-2010, 04:34 PM Well, that was a bugger of a drive home. I was making great mileage but with all the traffic on the road I pulled over to a turn lane to let people by and some ice caught the loose edge of one of my aero-panels (behind the missing passenger side one). The one that had been pulled loose late last year when we had a big snowstorm and I had to run over a huge chunk of ice as I was merging onto a highway. That time I just pushed the edge up from the pavement and it pretty much sprang back into place. This time it had the other two front support points ripped loose and was left with the leading edge half way down from the bottom of the car to the pavement. A nice big scoop!
I had to pull over twice to "unfold" it after that happened. :p
I was able to reattach the outer edge (push plastic clip), but the inner one wasn't salvageable and the loop on the front-most edge was ripped off... so I flattened out a metal bracket I had laying around to make big tab to put the bolt through which is angled back over the top of the plastic aero-panel to keep it in place. I'll have to purchase another panel to install when it warms up. Blah.
21F, 1mph crosswind from the SW, sunny:
81.5mpg for 22.5mi (Work to home)
The tank is back up to 75.4mpg over 533.6mi with 8 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 78.0mpg for 45.4mi
jcp123 02-10-2010, 05:03 PM I'm impressed - despite some hard driving, I managed a 15,04mpg showing. I'm perplexed but pleased.
lxmike 02-10-2010, 05:50 PM cold here today by florida standards. didn't even get to 60 here.
40.8- 7.1 mile to work.
40.2- 6.1 mile home.
Tank sitting at 39.0 @ 177 miles.
been trying to drive like i used to which is getting up to speed slower. I had been accelerating slow to about 30 when it would be in 4th then accel semi hard to get to 42 where my torque converter locksup.. I am now just getting up there slower now and it seems to be helping. when i say semi hard i mean about 24-2500 rpm as oppossed to 21-2200 that i'm using now.
Die2self 02-10-2010, 05:56 PM cool this morning but warmed up
school>Work
- 17.8 / 13.7 miles (8F N@3)
work > home
- 20.8 / 13.3 miles (33F N@6)
daily avg = 19.3 / 27.0 miles

The tank is steady at 75.4mpg over 556.4mi with 7 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
PaleMelanesian 02-11-2010, 08:13 AM I don't understand the weather. Last week it was 27 degrees and raining, but today we have 39 degrees and snow. First accumulating snow in about 7 years, so it could be interesting later today. We don't have any plows or anything.
67.1 mpg home
65.6 this morning
Tank is steady at 66.5 mpg, 518 miles and 1/2 tank.
Skwyre7 02-11-2010, 10:37 AM Crap weather yesterday during my morning commute - blowing snow and freezing slush on the roads. I took a turn too fast (not that fast - I am a hypermiler ;)) and slid into a curb. I bent a control arm and the steel rim on the front driver's side. It's at the shop now getting fixed.
Other than that, My last tank was up from the previous two. :)
Right Lane Cruiser 02-11-2010, 02:06 PM 23F, 1mph wind from the S, sunny:

Day Total: 80.3mpg over 42.8mi
diamondlarry 02-11-2010, 03:35 PM Not too bad for today considering temps in the low 20'sF and winds W@ 10-15 mph and semi-snow covered roads. I had 54.* (yeah that's right, I forgot to write anything down today:0) for 38.5 miles today.:o
Right Lane Cruiser 02-11-2010, 03:48 PM 26F (21F windchill), 4mph wind from the SSE, sunny:

There's a ""Big Boy Expo" this weekend, cool cars, trucks, atv's,motorcycle, yard stuff and the flyer said electic cars too. So i'm gonna check it out saturday and see what i can find.

Sounds like fun lxmike:Banane18:
Chalupa102 02-11-2010, 07:17 PM This weather has been crazy. Yesterday pretty much every school in Western Mass, including my college, was closed because they were expecting a huge snowstorm. There was maybe 2 inches that actually fell; they were predicting 8-12". Today it was seasonably warm. 39F with 15mph winds from the NW.
- 45.8mpg for 21.5 miles from home to school
- 34.2mpg for 5.9 miles from school to the gym
- 45.3mpg for 23 miles for the trip home
- 46.1mpg for 2.6 miles from home to the middle school to pick up my friend's son (gotta love downhills)
- 38.7mpg for 1.6 miles from middle school to friend's house to babysit
- 33.8mpg for 6.7 miles from friend's house to home
The tank is down to 43.1mpg as of now with over 3/4 remaining on the gas gauge.
Right Lane Cruiser 02-11-2010, 10:02 PM 9F, no wind, clear:
78.7mpg for 17.2mi (Church to home)
The tank is steady at 75.9mpg over 614.8mi with 5 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 78.9mpg over 81.1mi
Right Lane Cruiser 02-12-2010, 06:12 AM So close!! Those last two red lights are all that stood between me and 80+mpg. :p
-3F, no wind, clear:
78.7mpg for 22.8mi (Home to work)
The tank is steady at 75.9mpg over 637.6mi with 4 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
This tank isn't going to last much longer.
Taliesin 02-12-2010, 08:43 AM Well... I filled up the tank this morning.
It was almost as bad as I feared. I worked my tail off and managed to salvage a 30.1 mpg tank.
I dropped of the truck for all the maintenance after driving 16 miles from the gas station.
I picked it up with 18.5 miles on it, and almost 1/4 tank gone.
PaleMelanesian 02-12-2010, 01:15 PM Well that was... interesting!
Keep in mind, the last time we had any snow accumulation at all was 6 years ago, and that was maybe 2 inches.
We got about 5 inches of snow overnight. My uphill driveway was impassable. I could see cars driving past on the street, but couldn't get there. It's a gravel driveway, and I have no snow shovel. I called in to work and decided to try again later. Went outside to play with the kids in the snow. :)
I finally got the driveway clear with a rake (), enough to get out. I'm at work now, but clearing that 100+ feet with the rake really tired me out.
I got 67.2 mpg to work, but counting the earlier failed attempts, the day's mileage is 60.
Predictably, the tank is down, from 66.4 to 65.9 and 538 miles.
jcp123 02-12-2010, 01:30 PM I can't comment on my FE today, but I can say that my car handled snow remarkably and surprisingly well.
Right Lane Cruiser 02-12-2010, 02:45 PM Nice raking, Andrew! :D:thumbs_up: Hopefully it doesn't dump any more on you.
20F, no wind, sunny:
50.7mpg for 1.3mi (Work to restaurant with some circling of the lot looking for a spot)
25F, no wind, sunny:
87.8mpg for 23.4mi (Restaurant to home)
The tank is back up to 76.3mpg over 662.3mi with 4 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 81.7mpg over 47.5mi
lxmike 02-12-2010, 02:54 PM 41.2- 7.1 mile to work. temp was 53.
trip home i stopped at circle-k to get some "juice" :D 2 mile from work and could only manage 35.X. had started raining and winds are blowing from the sw which is headwind for my first mile then sidewind the next 4, then the last mile is behind me.
trip from store to house i pulled out 40.5 for the last 4 miles.
tank sitting at 39.2 -191 miles.
Sean: Thats what gets me. I have a light about a mile from my house and if i take the short route 99.999% of time it is red. I have been looping through a shopping center and my odds are much better.
Right Lane Cruiser 02-12-2010, 02:59 PM Hi, Mike -- there aren't any alternate routes for the last part of my route to work and those last 4 lights are in bad spots (foot of hills or on the side of a really steep hill).
The shopping center loop is a good call! I've got a few of those types of alternates on my routes and I do love maintaining momentum. :)
Chalupa102 02-12-2010, 03:09 PM No driving to the gym because my sister volunteered to drive. 35F with 14mph winds from the W and the windchill at 29F.
- 44.7mpg for 21.5 miles from home to school
- 40.3mpg for 17.7 miles from school to the store. Cold start up temps and went a way that i've never gone before and traffic was horrible :(
- 40.3mpg for 8.6 miles from store to home
The tank has dropped to 42.8mpg and i have to go out later tonight. Unfortunately it's gonna be short trips, which normally i would take the bicycle but i'm giving blood, so it probably wouldn't be such a great idea.
lxmike 02-13-2010, 02:15 PM Just got home from the expo. was nice to get out but wasn't much to see. They had them cramed in there so the booths was real small. The electric cars they had ended up being electric carts: golf/utility. They did have an electric bike and motorcycle.
42.4 mpg 16 miles there, I had a headwind for the first 3-4 mile then once i got on main road it ended up being a tailwind and i was :D SG was showing above 50 mpg at steady cruise and that's what pulled me up to 42. I was only car coming in at the time and i got a nice 1/4 mile fas and even circled the lot a bit and found a high spot to roll out when leaving
40.8 13 miles from expo to fiveguys. ever since i found them they're the only burger place i'll go to.
41.1 3 mile home. This could have been much better. The 1 light on my way home got stopped at and i figured the front car was going straight. well when light went green he turned right and everyone else was too. :( Here in florida you can turn right on red after stopping.
Tank up to 39.5 236 mile.
Chalupa102 02-13-2010, 07:21 PM ^I went to an expo today as well. It was the Camping and Outdoor Show at the Eastern States Expo (Big E).
Forgot to put in last night's trip. Went to give blood last night, but i had a vaccine right before school started. It was under 21 days from yesterday, so i wasn't able to donate :(. 31F with 11mph winds from the W.
- 44.9mpg for 9.3 miles from home to senior center
- 39.5mpg for 9.5 miles for the trip back home
Tank had dropped to 42.6mpg yesterday at the end of the day. Today, i brought my mom to that show and out to eat. 32F with very little wind.
- 48mpg for 36.3 miles from home to the Big E :woot:
- 38.4mpg for 15.7 miles from the Big E to Friendly's to eat (a lot of stop lights with the route i took)
- 40.4mpg for 14.6 miles from Friendly's to home
Tank is up to 42.9mpg as of now and i should be done driving this weekend. Planning to ride to bicycle tomorrow for the trip to church.
