View Full Version : Mileage logs
pcs0snq 02-04-2010, 01:05 PM Was just wonder why the mileage logs have many "one shot wonders" (most less then a tank) and many retired or no longer logging? I think it would be better to parse those out with those that keep posting day in and day out on the top. True users as opposed to a extreme test cases for a few miles to make a hi spot on the list or cars that have long been sold or the driver gave up.
I was looking at the better Honda Fits and see two have not posted in some time.
ksstathead 02-04-2010, 04:17 PM Some examples:
I have posted my results on my wife's car and on my son's car, but do not track their results.
I avoid posting routinely because: a) with my 1.5 mile commute I would pull down the gallons saved at times (below epa) and b) I prefer to track in excel and/or a tablet in the car and not re-enter data elsewhere.
I would not be offended if I were pushed to the bottom or were expunged altogether. It is how I get a rating as skilled hypermiler in the signature blocks, and shows I have done it. But not a biggie. If I ever have a longer commute, I might post more, at least if I did a challenge.
pcs0snq 02-04-2010, 06:56 PM just saying.....I'm sure I could all out in a MT fit and get a 70mpg run and post that and look like the king. Huge difference between that and day in and day out dealing with rain, winds cold weather and some crappy hypermilling conditions. and have almost 50.
Here's a few exmples

gabe1475 02-04-2010, 08:01 PM I tend to agree. Although I would not say get rid of their accomplishments, but perhaps a seperate category "best one way trip" or "best tank".
PaleMelanesian 02-05-2010, 08:41 AM I agree about the one-hit-wonders. The retired vehicles are good for a reference point. (like FitMPG's 21,000 miles logged) They show what's possible in the real world while NOT cherry-picking a single best tank or trip.
WoodyWoodchuck 02-05-2010, 12:16 PM How about not making the main list until you hit 1,000, 2,000, 2,500 or 5,000 miles logged? This would cull the one tank guys from the main list but still show on a ‘preliminary’ list or something. I downloaded and sorted by vehicle then miles logged for my comparisons. All my comparisons were done using only logs with over 10,000 miles. I felt this gave me actual numbers form folks who kept the logs updated regularly, not just a prime tank here and a killer tank there.
PaleMelanesian 02-05-2010, 12:35 PM I removed a handful of single-tank entries. Checked the members' posting history, and they joined, posted once or twice, posted that one tank, and then disappeared.
I'm leaving shan and fitmpg in there.
Damionk 02-05-2010, 01:00 PM Then you get people like me who are still active on the forum, still hypermile, but have gotten lazy about keeping track of tanks. (I think part of that has to do with my SG being stolen.)
pcs0snq 02-05-2010, 08:14 PM Thanks for the help Andrew. You never know how a note like this will be taken.
This is great! I've always had the same thought, but never thought to say anything about it.
Thank you!
Jess
pcs0snq 02-06-2010, 12:09 PM PaleMelanesian is the #8 ranked GAS car in the logs. The 7 cars above him are all retired or not posting results.....
PaleMelanesian 02-08-2010, 09:01 AM Thanks for seeing that. ;)
AerocivicLB is still active, and kicking my butt. He's also driving at highway speeds, when I'm rolling along at suburban speeds. Really, though, he's done a lot of work on that car, and mine is nearly stock. (grille block, scangauge, tire pressure)

RETIRED You are all alone at the top of the active loggers

PaleMelanesian 02-08-2010, 02:26 PM He swapped the engine for the VX lean-burn version and started a new log. Same car, only now with a lean-burn engine on top of it all.

pcs0snq 02-12-2010, 07:36 PM that's not fair
I am slack. I haven't even been hypermiling! :P My commute is wearing on me but I do have 86k on the FIT and haven't needed to change the brakes yet and I am only on my second set of tires with 40K on them. :)
The only problem I have been experiencing lately is the Electric Power Steering seems to not always work when I turn the car on. I thought that my FAS switch might have something to do with it and disconnected it but I still have the problem and I found on Fitfreak.net that others are having the same problem a $800 ESP unit fix. :( I may just live with it unless Honda does a recall which it think they should.
pcs0snq 02-20-2010, 08:42 AM Hey not only slack but MIA. Good to see you show up. Stay connected.
Honda says we have a defective window switch in the door that can cause fire. That makes a trifecta for me
2009 Camry Gas peddle (loss of control)
2008 Fit switch (fire)
1996 F-350 break switch (fire)
Race car has no recalls hee hee

Right Lane Cruiser 02-20-2010, 10:27 AM Which one is you in the picture?
pcs0snq 02-25-2010, 08:28 PM heavy duty racer with fire jacket on in the middle. I just won the season opener in my dragster in the pic, week before last at PBIR. Car is deadly consistent.
Also got a 62mpg, 100mile segment Tuesday, with the Fit.
carbon balanced
Right Lane Cruiser 02-25-2010, 09:22 PM Nice work, Paul!
uabcar 03-02-2010, 12:05 PM I still keep track of every tank. Just haven't updated my log in a while. I'm in OH and between the cold weather and winter gas, my FE is uninspiring- unfortunately causing me to HM less than usual.
Warm weather in on the way though and I'll be dialing up my HM efforts in a big way soon. Last year- with my still fairly new motor (~6k miles), I was unable to crack a 40mpg tank avg (almost all suburban driving).
I'm hopeful that the motor is looser now. Additionally, I'll be switching to 0w20 oil in the spring.
MnFocus 06-13-2010, 05:44 PM :) I still look in....slack on my logging in / gas logging though.
ItsNotAboutTheMoney 06-17-2010, 11:16 AM I log every tank in the Prius since that's "my" car, but I usually have to wait for the Civic's receipt. ;)
I usually have the Prius' tank posted to the CleanMPG log before I log it in my own spreadsheet. Since my lifetime average is still rising I'm keen to update it and update my signature. :D
