My 100K page (http://techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/cars/maint100k/) clearly shows how iridium "dual-tip" plugs wear
down. And how the substrate of the ground electrode does too,
if the gap has gotten a little misaligned.
.
None of the articles mention what it *means* to have a hotter
or colder plug, and why it might be important. To this day I'm
not 100% sure myself; it seemed to have something to do with how
long the insulator is relative to the plug shell, and how fast
heat can get passed from the electrode area to the cylinder head.
A little quick googling turns up this (http://www.strappe.com/plugs.html) which seems to explain
it a bit better.
.
None of the articles mention the benefits of a little anti-seize
on the plug threads to prevent the threads binding and spalling
several thousand hot miles down the road. Very important for an
engine that's going to have them in there for 100,000 miles, and
never done at the factory [even Toyota] so it's up to the owner
to take care of that early in car's lifecycle.
