View Full Version : New Prius’ at almost invoice.
Hi All:
___Since the Prius II’s are finally beginning to stack up on Toyota dealerships lots, the prices are getting downright reasonable. The latest purchase I saw was $100 over invoice at a Toyota dealership in Frederick, MD. Just a heads up for those shopping for a nice Christmas gift for your wife ;)
___The TCH’s is a whole other ball game … I guess it will be a while before we begin to see those at $24K + TTL :(
___Good Luck

tigerhonaker 11-22-2006, 04:20 PM There is a Line of Toyota Prius Hybrids down the street from where I live. Like 4-Miles from this Computer I'm typing on.
Then at the Honda Dealer they have a roll of HCH II's in stock. Same distance from where I am sitting.

The time is right if one wants a New Hybrid. :woot:
brick 11-22-2006, 11:23 PM Bah. It hurts to read these posts and then realize that buying a new car wouldn't be anywhere near reasonable. I almost turned into the Toyota dealer on my way by today but managed to keep going. Quite a few new Prius mixed in, along with a couple of used (but overpriced) models that I stopped to look at two weeks ago. Still haven't driven one because I'm afraid I'll try to take it home! Makes me wonder what the market place will look like in a couple of years, when I will be able to at least rationalize a trade.
On a less selfish note, it's kinda sad that people have suddenly quit buying these things since gasoline made its temporary dip into the low $2's. You would think that the scramble would still be on due to people trying to get theirs before things get bad again.
**EDIT**
I just checked their inventory on line....9 of them sitting there!
Hi Tim:
___With your capabilities, new route, and new locale to come, I would bet 60 + would be in the bag. Have you done the math vs. the 02 Accord? Just making you blink and salivate at the same time ;)

TonyPSchaefer 11-24-2006, 10:55 PM I drove through the lot of Classic Toyota in Waukegan this afternoon; there were at least three Prii sitting on the lot. I didn't look at the packages, but they were there.
Definitely, the Prius is becoming for familiar.
Hi Tony:
___I have never seen one at Classic in my life although I do not drive by but once every 3 or 4 months … Still kind of interesting to hear about them on the lots around the country and that people are actually picking them up near invoice finally.

Umm...This is pretty bad. Bad like somebody is going to have to hold me back. I had only done informal, not-too-accurate calculations based on cost vs. gas. I hadn't gotten into the details including insurance, maintenance, and residual value, so I just put together a spreadsheet to see what it really looks like over the next 5 years. Here's how it worked out:
Honda Accord (2002):
Total Cash Investment: $4050
Total Insurance: $8220
Total Gas: $8356.8 (@ $3.25/gal)
Maintenance: $1500 (VERY rough estimate, if nothing goes wrong)
Residual value: $2800 (Based on a 10 year old Accord @ 140,000mi)
Total 5 year cost: $19326 (est.)
Toyota Prius (2007):
Total Cash Investment: $16220
Total Insurance: $9000
Total Gas: $4875 (@ $3.25/gal)
Total Maintenance: $600 (Also VERY rough, no major failures)
Residual Value: $10000 (Tough to estimate, but based on 90000mi)
Total 5 year cost: $20695 (est.)
So for an extra $1368 ($273/year) I could be driving a Prius. Only thing is that doesn't count the fact that I would have an extra 7-8 grand tied up in a car rather than accruing interest somewhere, which is another ~$1200 or so. And I would estimate that the numbers are all subject to +/- at least 10% since insurance and maintenance numbers are probably poor estimates. But still, TCO comes out a whole lot closer than I would have thought!
**EDIT**
I just realized that I left something out. That's based on MSRP, and I would come out ahead if I got it closer to invoice and managed to get the tax credit. (MSRP is based on the lowest trimline that includes VSC.)
Hi Tim:
___Those numbers are tough to look at. The kicker is going to be the guess of $3.00 plus or $2.25 minus for fuel costs from 08 forward.
___I count 14 of them in stock at the Toyota dealership Tony mentioned above. Within 7 miles of my home in fact.

___When/if the MDX finally goes, I might just have to head on over for a little talk ;)

While I was car shopping last week, ther were 15 Prii at Leith Toyota in Raliegh. On black Friday I stopped at a Honda dealership near pittsburgh. They had zero HCHII. Evidently they are still flying off the lots up there. No TCH at either Toyota that I visited (Raliegh, Pittsburgh). Both quoted me 27-28k if and when they got one.
Hi All:
___We should probably create a “Prices Paid” thread or forum for those interested but another 07 Prius II is in the hands of a new owner in LA of all places. Just $200 over for a package #2.
Prius Package #2 in Los Angeles: $200 over invoice. (http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/WebX?14@@.f0a4a16/386)
___With these kinds of prices and the $1,575 tax credit, I bet the Prius II will start encroaching on Civic EX and Corolla LE sales in the not to distant future if this keeps up! At invoice + a few hundred $’s, the Prius II is beating up on the compacts in terms of out the door/off the lot prices by far.

Hi All:
___I couldn’t believe what I just saw this morning. An individual is posting in the Edmunds - Prices Paid and buying experience forum that there are (120) 2007 Prius II’s on the ground at Sunnyale Toyota in or around San Francisco of all places. His next post stated that there was 62 on the ground at Piercey Toyota in the same locale and they were offering (41) package 4 equipped Prius II’s for just $400 over invoice. With 41 on the lot, I bet you offer them $150 over tomorrow and you are driving home with a brand new Prius II (package 4 equipped) for $23,700 minus the $1,575 tax credit + TTL. We are talking San Francisco, home of the $3,000 - $5,000 markup above MSRP for years now! If you are looking, I would say there are some decent bargains to be had all over the country and it is about time …
___I have to add there are some great deals on the 2007 FEH’s as well. With the $2,500 in rebates and that monster tax credit, these things can be driven off the lots for < $20,500 with the safety package!
___Good Luck
