View Full Version : Video: Who the Heck Should I Hire (as NFL Coach)
Chuck 12-24-2009, 10:05 AM While the video is directed at Daniel Synder and the Redskins, it could be the Raiders, Cowboys, and several other teams.
Poll: which teams will be looking at new coaches at the end of this season?

peacefrog_0521 12-25-2009, 02:01 PM Well obviously the Redskins...if anyone's stupid enough to take that job. They don't seem to be "Horny for Zorny" anymore. I've only heard of Mike Shanahan on the short list. He should only take it if he gets part-ownership of the franchise and absolute, complete authority over football decisions.
I foresee the following as of current standings:
- Tampa Bay Bucs: Raheem Morris is over his head and isn't getting it done. Sacking his coordinator at the start of the season didn't have the desired effect. Was Gruden really that bad?
- SEA Seahawks: Kind of the same story as Tampa, with Jim Mora. I'm actually surprised to see them at 5-9 though, I thought they were worse. The tipping points may be that the fans and Paul Allen expected better, and especially from someone with the name "Jim Mora".
- Cleveland Browns: He may have improved his position to "on the bubble", as the Pittsburgh Steelers managed to make Eric Mangini look like ManGenius again. Against Kansas City though, that was all Josh Cribbs and Jerome Harrison. (And if they don't give Cribbs a better contract he'll be playing somewhere else next year anyway.) And I do not give them credit for their win over Buffalo, that was a fluke.
- STL Rams: Steve Spagnuolo is probably better than his record implies, but "you're only as good as your record", and he will become the sacrificial lamb, especially if/when new ownership comes in. It may be the best thing that happens to him; he'll probably move on as a DEF coordinator and win another Superbowl.
- I had Kansas City on this list, but other than the 3-11 record, I don't really see any tipping points (first-year coach, no ownership change pending, etc.). So Todd Haley might be safe for a year, especially since they also beat the Steelers.
Teams I didn't vote for but are ones to watch over the next few weeks:
- Carolina Panthers' John Fox: Probably saved his job by beating the Vikings. But my theory is that Bill Cowher might be campaigning for that job since he moved back to North
Carolina. (Unfortunately he became a Carolina Hurricanes fan in the process and embarrassed himself in the playoff series against the Penguins.)
- JAX Jaguars Jack Del Rio: May have saved his job by almost beating the Colts, and a playoff berth will secure him. A 7-9 record might see his demise, though he did a good job getting his team back together earlier in the year.
- Dallas Cowboys' Wade "Little Bummerooski" Philips: They've beaten an undefeated team, and got the December monkey off their backs. But if they somehow miss the playoffs, or get knocked out of the first round, the fans and Jerry Jones won't stand for it. They are almost as bad as the Redskins in this regard.
- New York "Football" Giants: Tom Coughlin might get caught up if he doesn't make the playoffs, since his Superbowl afterglow has worn off, and his team's late-season slide has soured the New York fan base. This probably has more to do with losing Steve Spagnuolo. A new stadium next year might be an excuse for the Giants to make a change.
Other comments and Honorable Mentions:
- BAL Ravens: I don't think John Harbaugh was ever on the hot seat, but he probably helped his cause greatly by beating the Steelers on national television.
- Buffalo Bills: They already made their coaching change mid-season, and unless someone better comes along (I though Shanahan was also on this short list), they'll probably keep Perry Fewell. (Isn't the the lead singer from Jane's Addiction?)
- Pittsburgh Steelers' Mike Tomlin: With the afterglow of our unprecedented SIXTH Superbowl trophy, and the front office's policy of patience with head coaches (Tomlin is the 3rd in 40 years, while I think the rest of the league has had 40 coaching changes in 3 years), Tomlin is safe, especially after beating the Packers in dramatic fashion. Beating the "Baltimore Browns" this weekend would help also. Next year needs to be a big improvement though, especially as Dan Rooney doesn't make all of the football decisions himself anymore, and their Director of Football Operations, Kevin Colbert, might think differently from the family.
- Jeff Fisher is probably safe in Tennessee, but only because of Vince Young and Chris Johnson. But who knows, maybe that might not even be enough. Some fool in the front office might get it in their head that Fisher's longest-active coaching tenure might now be a liability.
- Detroit Lions: They probably don't need a head coaching change as much as a change at GM, and especially ownership. William Clay Ford is old, senile, drunk, detached from reality, insulated from the outside world, surrounded by "yes" men, and is somewhat distracted by the goings on at his other pet project, Ford Motor Company. Many in Detroit are clamoring for him to turn over ownership of the team to Bill Ford Jr., especially since it was Junior (who already holds the title of Vice Chairman) who came out in the press last year and called for Matt Millen's dismissal - and it happened within a few days. Few remember it was Junior who convinced dad to hire Millen in the first place. In any case, replacing Millen with the comedy team of Lewand and Mayhew, two holdovers from the Millen-era, have not had the desired effect.
Chuck 12-25-2009, 02:33 PM Taking a coaching job in Oakland or Washington is a sucide mission...Shannahan will get 7 million to do nothing next year, so why not wait for a better opportunity than the Redskins?
Jim Zorn is not that bad - it's the situation....he was an excellent quarterbacks coach originally hired as offensive coordinator, then promoted to head coach when nobody else was interested.
Teams I predict will have vacancies:
Browns
Redskins
Raiders
Bills
Bucs
SeahawksOther teams that could easily pull the trigger:
Cowboys
Texans
Panthers
Rams
JaguarsThe Steelers, Giants, and Titans are not going to switch coaches.
In the NFC, Wade Phillips is about the only coach with an uncertain fate: it's how he does in the playoffs. Maybe some uncertainity with the Rams and Bucs - 1st year coaches generally don't get fired, but it does happen and both have had seasons bad enough it would be no suprize.
This weekend will make the AFC picture much clearer: six teams are ready to take a wildcard spot if the Ravens or Broncos fall.
There will be 8-10 new head coaches, maybe more for the 2010 season....Jan 4 could set a record for NFL unemployment.
peacefrog_0521 12-25-2009, 08:48 PM I'm not so sure now about Jeff Fisher, watching the rout by the Chargers tonight. I think the Titans have clearly suffered too much on defense, with the departure of Jim Schwartz and Albert Haynesworth. Even so, I'm more convinced with each play that Jeff Fisher will be fired after this season, whether deserved or not.
Chuck 12-25-2009, 08:52 PM I hope Jeff Fisher survives and think Bud Adams is foolish to let him go.
If so, he will get a very friendly call from Jerry Jones.
peacefrog_0521 01-03-2010, 05:15 PM AP is reporting that Jim Zorn and the entire Redskins' coaching staff will be relieved of their duties tomorrow...

Chuck 01-03-2010, 05:37 PM I hope Zorn's next gig is for a team that is NOT looking for their seventh coach in a decade.
Chuck 01-04-2010, 11:10 AM Zorn got fired as expected.
Less expected, the entire Bills coaching staff fired.
Tom Cable @ Oakland may be next.

I'm almost upset that Tom Cable may be fired. He stepped in as an interim and exceeded everyone's expectations. Even though they were 5-11 this year, most of those 5 wins were over very good teams which were expected to roll over the Raiders (all with winning records, except the Chefs). His team believes in him, and the alleged assault seems to be a non-issue (the guy probably deserved it in any case).
Remember last year when the Raiders were often used in the same sentence with the Lions? No more, and that's largely due to The Cable Guy. He understood that JaMarcus Russell isn't the guy to QB this team, though somehow he got Russell to stage a huge win over the Broncos.
Unfortunately, Russell's biggest supporter is Al Davis. And that's all that matters.
I'm convinced that Dan Snyder is Al Davis' illegitimate son.

Chuck 01-08-2010, 08:41 AM Holmgren is not going to fire the Man Genius.
Chuck 01-09-2010, 09:27 AM Jim Mora fired in Seattle - they are trying to hire Pete Carroll at the speed the Redskins did getting Mike Shanannahan.
Mora out as coach of Seahawks; Carroll next? (http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/34770305/ns/sports-nfl/)
