Hello all,
Been on EcoModder and here for 6 months now. Been reading here but not posting yet.
Engineer in defense industry. Live in Tucson AZ but work in San Jose CA. Project car is my commuter in San Jose. (Have to make up for all that Kerosene that Soutwest uses to get me home on the weekends)
Project car: 97 Mazda Protege DX 1.5L manual.
Current Mods: A/C delete, PS delete, Backseat delete, Pass seat and airbag delete, Spare/jack delete. Replaced stock rear rims with Honda V/X rims and 155 tires. Saved 6 lbs per wheel. 0w/20 oil. Added ScanguageII. Lower grill block for faster warm-ups. Total weight saved so far 159lbs. (Now if I could only loose 20lbs)
Commute: 5.5 miles one way 22 stop lights. Last tank average speed 22mph. So I'm concentrating on lightweighting and timing traffic lights.
Planned Mods(next 6 months): Remove outer crankshaft pulley. (Not needed no A/C,PS)
Replace front wheels with 155 tires and V/X rims.
LED lights then downsize battery/alternator.
Engine kill switch so I don't loose digital odometer when I kill engine coasting to stop light.
Future Mods (out there):
Remove 13Gallon fuel tank and replace with 5-7gallon spare tire well tank. My commute is so short I only fill up every 8-9weeks. I carry around 30-40 lbs of fuel for a month.
High tech (Ceramic or percision) wheel bearings and lubricant.
Smaller rear brakes (Smaller drums, and/or alluminum drums from Smart car or old Honda CRX, etc)
Smaller radiator. 1.5L engine with 13x25 inch radiator. I think I can go smaller.
Remove glass, crank, plastic shell from rear doors: insert lexan.
Lightweight muffler/exhaust also clean up under aero when I remove gas tank.
Last 3 tanks: (6 months) 39mpg. See fuel log on EcoModder.
