Only in France --Ed.

The Renault company has run into trouble with young French parents over the name of its latest car. They are unhappy that the firm has bestowed the name Zoé on its forthcoming all-electric offspring.

This is not the first time that Renault has caused discontent since it began giving its vehicles cute feminine names in the late 1980s. Clio and Mégane dropped from favour for girls after the car maker used them for two popular models. At least no-one was called Twingo or Safrane, names which Renault made up for other models. Scots were bemused by the choice four years ago of the pedestrian surname Logan for the low-cost car that has been a European hit for Renault. The oddest of all coinages was the Renault Vel-Satis, the company's luxury car, which has been a failure. The name was supposed to conjure up something futuristic.

With Zoé, Renault is taking a name that has been fashionable for the past few years in France. Its defenders think they have a chance to stop the company from devaluing it because the car remains at the concept stage and could be released under another name.

Petitions have sprung up on the internet. Sébastien Mortreux, from the northern town of Auby, is gathering signatures witha text that calls Renault's action shameful. ... http://timescorrespondents.typepad.com/charles_bremner/2009/11/renault-in-trouble-over-a-car-named-zo%C3%A9.html

Renault could just change the name to "Sue".

[As in "Lawsuit"]

I know of someone who has a last name of "Preuss" (which I believe is pronounced "Prius").

My best friend Allie Moore actually thinks it would be cool to have a car (or PHEV upgrade) named after her.

And of course, there's the auto company Tesla, named after a famous scientist.

So what's the big deal?

Maybe a moral issue? doesn't make sense in our society, but...who knows...

And then there's Mercedes... (True story: when I first met someone named Mercedes, the first thing I thought was cars.)

Ford, Chevrolet, Buick, Dodge, Cadillac, Edsel, and many others were also people's names first.

So long as Renault doesn't get overzealous about trademark protection I don't see the big deal.

How could you EVER name your daughter after my ex witch.....the one that got rid of me (a bald, chubby, loud, hairy, old, tired mail man) and marry a college student (young, handsome, quiet, muscular, unibrow) from Turkey:banane58:.....and we are of Greek decent!!!

Showing the news article of their wedding made my Greek Orthodox Church divorce easy!:biglol:

When I hear the name Mercedes, first thing I think is high maintenance... ;)

All vehicles are supposed to be saturated in testosterone: Ram, Charger, Mustang, Viper, Hemi engines, rumbling Harleys, snarling sport bikes, not-cute-Calibers, V-8's, V-10's, glass-pack mufflers, ad nauseum.

You can't name a vehicle with a girl's name. It's not allowed!

I've a similar problem with my car - the company name, Vauxhall, is named after a London borough (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vauxhall) so when I go to London to visit my friends, and when they talk about Vauxhall, Londoners think first of the borough, I (like all other non-Londoners) think first of the car company. This is an extremely minor issue though, who cares!

I suggest they file a patent if they don't want the name to be used :D.
