The Oaktec Insight has three factors that make it unique in the world of special stage rallying. Firstly it uses an electrical hybrid system to capture energy that would be wasted during braking and retardation, and re-uses it to help accelerate the car by providing current to an electric assist motor. Secondly it has been developed to use renewable E85 bio-ethanol fuel in place of conventional unleaded petrol. This fuel gives strong power combined with ultra low emissions. The third factor that makes this car highly unusual in motorsport is that its hybrid power system drives through a continually variable automatic transmission, which gives the car better performance and driveability.

Clicking the link converts all the tildes to "%7E". You can go through your address bar and replace every instance of %7E with ~

It's the long way around, granted. But it works.

insight can use e85?

Not on a stock Insight - it's got to be a mod.

Rally racing is my absolute favorite sport. I'm a Medic on rally stages when the National Championship comes through Missouri. It's a blast!

Last year a Bio-D Golf averaged 35 mpg RACING! They came in the middle-of-the-pack with times, but that's amazing. Hopefully the Hybrid will show up here in February.

My Rally roots go back to when the Speed channel had the WRC on now and then. I even went out and bought the first 2003 Mitsu Lancer Evolution VIII in KC (kind-of a bad decision, but I got it out of my system -- 18 mpg combined -- but with 17-lbs of boost, nearly 300 hp from a 2.0L 4-cyl, and AWD, it was too tempting to drive it). My youth wore off and the plan began to phase-in more fuel-efficient vehicles in the household. Now the TSX (LEV-2/low-mid-30s MPG) is in the garage (wife's pick). My next car (maybe '09) will likely be a hybrid or clean Diesel.
