View Full Version : An attractive solution for a grille block! Sean T. 11-13-2009, 03:12 PM Finally installed my front end grille block yesterday... Can anybody find it? LOL http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/522/P1010052.JPG Sean T. 11-13-2009, 03:17 PM Here's a better picture! It's clear vinyl I ordered online, I just put it over the turn signal cavities and the upper grille. Any consensus on whether you think it will be helpful or not? Already tested the temperatures (it was real warm yesterday) and it hasn't effected them at all. http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/522/P1010054.JPG http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/522/P1010053.JPG JusBringIt 11-13-2009, 03:21 PM Why don't you upload them to the CleanMPG database? Those picture links actually require you to sign in, so you can't use them. Sean T. 11-13-2009, 03:31 PM I tried to upload them but didn't see a direct way to attach them to the post.... I'm new here :( I'll take another look and see if I can figure it out. JusBringIt 11-13-2009, 03:35 PM CleanMPG photo gallery (http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/) upload them ^ :) Sean T. 11-13-2009, 03:42 PM ***Fixed!!!! Thanks :D bestmapman 11-13-2009, 04:33 PM Can you post the link where you ordered it. Also, do you think it will do any damage taking it off. JusBringIt 11-13-2009, 06:38 PM Over the lower grill block would yield better results, however, how did you attach it? I had something similar before, but have since reverted back to my original. I hardly ever drive on the highway much less fast enough to really need it. I might do a grill block this winter for the colder tems though. nervousmini 11-13-2009, 10:01 PM Here's a pic of my upper grill block. http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/522/medium/IMG00038-20090522-1211.jpg I used the 3M stoneguard film, works great and comes off with no damage even after years in place. Sean T. 11-13-2009, 11:14 PM I ordered clear vinyl from a local mod shop (but I ordered it though eBay) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280279823192 It's adhesive on the back. Just like a sticker, but clear. My car breathes in from the bottom, so I'm a bit afraid blocking off the lower part might raise the engine temp too much. Although I plan on building an underbody shield in the future. I hadn't put too much though into removing it, although I was just told on ecomodder.com that after about a year it will become very difficult to remove... haven't looked into that yet. Although last year (before I had my front bumper painted) I had put some coroplast over the bottom although I don't remember how it effected the temperatures or mileage. http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/522/P4010191.JPG I did have this on for a while (when I had my OTHER old bumper) (yes, I've had about half a dozen bumpers) and it improved MPGs but wasn't practical. In windy conditions it would pull on the car (left and right) until one day I just had to pull over and rip it off cause it was just too unsafe. http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/522/IMG_1002.jpg tanwill 11-30-2009, 12:06 AM Ohh **** !! You will have overheat problem !! Right Lane Cruiser 11-30-2009, 07:31 AM Will, nearly all of us who use grill blocks keep a close eye on coolant temp via the ScanGauge. Those who don't typically can't use a ScanGauge in their vehicles for one reason or another. PaleMelanesian 11-30-2009, 10:31 AM I haven't had an overheating problem, with a complete grille block, even in the summer. I live in Texas. I watch the temperature with my Scangauge. Sean T. 12-03-2009, 10:34 PM The engine (on my car) actually doesn't hardly get any air from the upper grille. It's purely decorative. Anyways, turns out after a couple weeks in the weather, this stuff gets brittle and is super hard to peel off the paint in one piece. This is really only good as a permanent solution. Not good if you ever plan on removing it. abcdpeterson 12-03-2009, 10:46 PM nice info, Thanks Sean! Bm2Boats 12-12-2009, 07:41 PM where did you find this Vinyl sheet? Sean T. 12-12-2009, 11:05 PM Metrorestyling.com, but I bought it through their ebay auctions. nervousmini 12-13-2009, 08:45 AM The engine (on my car) actually doesn't hardly get any air from the upper grille. This is really only good as a permanent solution. Not good if you ever plan on removing it. The 3M stoneguard film doesn't do this - even after many years ( 5+ ) on the car. With a hair dryer/heat gun it peels right off with no damage to paint or plastic. Sean T. 12-13-2009, 10:52 PM Then I'd say if you plan on doing this then get the 3M stuff. The stuff I got was Avery brand IIRC. drimportracing 12-14-2009, 12:07 AM I'm going shopping! Thanks everyone! :D - Dale drimportracing 12-14-2009, 12:28 AM This is what I found, Scotchcal by 3M: http://cgi.ebay.com/3M-SCOTCHCAL-MARKING-FILM-PLOTTER-VINYL-24-x12-NEW_W0QQitemZ330363267474QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4ceb2f6992 It's 24" wide and $2.25 per foot, free shipping on the first foot and 25 cents for each additional in shipping. So 4 feet is $9.75 total. If you order multiple feet orders the length will be a continuous piece. And this is what 3M says it is: http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawebserver?66666UuZjcFSLXTt4Xf_nXMEEVuQEcuZgVs6EVs6E666666-- Note the following, 3M says: It is good for 6 months of exterior durability, pg1 under the Description heading and sub-heading of Advantages. It is removable within 1 year. pg1 in the Characteristics block. And is warranted for removal, by heat for 6 months. pg2 under the Removal heading. I'll do some more searching and see what else I can find. Updated, I just bought 3 feet for $6.75, the seller left no way to add the 50 cents for additional shipping costs. I'll let you know if I get it for that price and if it is usable as grill block material on my car. I'm thinking that the 1" or 2" strips also available on Ebay can be used to cover body gaps, ie: truck cab to bed, side gaps; temporary use for hood to fender, trunk to quarter-panels, passenger side fender to door It would be lighter than a silicon fill and cleaner aerodynamically. :D - Dale Sean T. 12-16-2009, 03:07 AM The stuff I bought has shattered by itself. Just from the freezing temperatures. I went out to my car after work today and it was all broken into pieces on the areas over the turn signals. drimportracing 12-16-2009, 03:11 AM Pics please! - Dale Sean T. 12-16-2009, 07:25 PM Rex is actually at the Dealership right now, they're trying to figure out his engine problems... so no pics for a while. bestmapman 12-17-2009, 07:50 AM When you get it back, pics please. Sean T. 12-19-2009, 09:35 PM Tried to take pics, but it just looks like there was a clear film on it that got all crackly... like peeling clearcoat or something. vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
