General Electric Co.’s hybrid water heater, which is scheduled to begin production at Louisville’s Appliance Park in mid-2011, has won a “Best of What’s New” award from Popular Science in the magazine’s “Home Technology” category.

The water heater, which uses heat pump technology in combination with traditional electronic heating elements, was deemed one of the top 100 technological innovations of 2009 by Popular Science editors.

The water heater has received the Energy Star designation from the federal government for its energy efficiency. It can produce as much hot water as a traditional water heater, but the dual heating function can save consumers as much as $320, 62 percent a year, on energy expenses, according to a news release.

This is a good tank, but it's still hard to beat solar to make hot water.

The combination is nothing new; most of the heating plants in
warmer climates [like almost all houses in Florida] have reversible
heat pump systems for home heating/cooling with plain ol' resistive
elements [about 5 KW?] for extra boost when needed in colder weather.

How much is GE going to milk their vaporware before getting a product onto the market? It has been discussed here since early last year, (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9825) yet the product is still two years away?

These premature announcements function mostly to cut off the sales of the competitive products already on the market.
