Well, duh. --Ed.

Ask any car company executive how they plan to turn a profit in the future and they'll rattle off plans to sell efficient and well-equipped small and midsize cars for premium prices.

John Mendel, Honda Motor Co.'s top U.S. auto executive, is well aware that the plans sound as if they were photocopied from the Japanese automaker's playbook.

The increasing competition faced by Honda's bread-and-butter models, the midsize Accord, compact Civic and CRV small crossover vehicle, is what keeps Mendel awake at night.

He says Honda will stay ahead of the pack with new technology and by introducing models in new market segments, but Mendel concedes it may have to update its cars more frequently as competitors keep getting better in quality, reliability and fuel economy.

"We don't have the gap that we had years ago,"... http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5hDZHgV1CP5RSdQe7eLL-xmq999ZA

I would hope that Honda changes the styling of the Accord. The current one is hideous looking IMO.

Well... the article is ALMOST correct when it said that no carmaker is making junk. Actually, there is ONE manufacturer that makes ONLY junk: Chrysler.

As far as fuel economy goes, why doesn't Honda make more use out of the CVT? That gearless transmission gets pretty "tall" at highway speeds. A CVT added to the Accord and the Fit would make for a nice improvement in highway mileage.

Define "junk"
Would you call a car that ran flawlessly for over 6 years, required nothing other than normal maintainence "junk". How about an AWD car that gets over 30 MPG with the CVT, and has been 100% trouble free for almost 3 years. Is that also "junk"? How about a V6 powered family sedan capable of high 30's economy running almost 200K miles with no problems other than normal wear items? WOuld you call that "junk"?

All 3 of the above are Chrysler corp vehicles i have either owned or still own. I have several other examples i could also list.

WOuld you call a car that is 5 years old and has rust holes in it "junk"? Would you call a car whose automatic transmission failed at 48K miles "junk"? WOuld you call a car that required new front brake pads every 13-15K miles "junk"? WOUld you call a car that required over $3,000 worth of repairs the first year out of warranty "junK"?
All 4 of the above happened to toyota and honda vehicles i have owned.
Interesting that you tout the use of a CVT, yet give Chrysler no credit for using it on the Caliber.
