2011 Prius-III PHEV-12 – Price unknown, AER 12-miles.

Toyota’s future is to highlight its concepts at the motor shows it attends. This years Tokyo show is no different with Toyota unveiling a broad array of concept vehicles with near future technologies.

This year, Toyota exhibit theme is "Harmonious Drive—A New Tomorrow for People and the Planet". This theme expresses Toyota’s commitment to making cars that exude individuality but are also in harmony with society.

The Toyota display will include a compact rear-wheel-drive sports car that embodies the joy of driving and the pleasure of ownership—the fundamental appeal of all automobiles according to Toyota. The display will also include (2) environmentally friendly concepts which we have all been waiting for intently including the Prius-III PHEV and a recently updated FT-BEV suitable for short-distance trips.

During the Tokyo Motor Show, TMC will also display its concept vehicles virtually on Toyota Metapolis, which is a Japanese-language marketing website featuring a virtual city. The virtual vehicle display is planned to go online on October 21 at Metropolis (http://metapolis.toyota.co.jp).

The First Toyota Vehicle with a Li-Ion Battery – 2010 Prius-III PHEV-12

Toyota has positioned a PHEV as the ideal environmentally-considerate vehicle best suited for widespread use given its responses to the diversification of energy sources at present.

The Prius-III PHEV Concept is the first Toyota vehicle that uses a Li-Ion battery as the traction battery. It is a PHEV concept l that can be charged from an external power source such as a household circuit.

Since Prius-III PHEV Concept has a Li-Ion battery, power amounting to a multiple of that a NiMH of similar size and weight can store is now possible. As a result, the cruising range in electric vehicle mode is far longer than that of a Prius-III with its OEM NiMH pack. The fuel economy of the third-generation Prius is 89 mpgUS on the Japan 10-15 cycle. The Prius-III PHEV Concept is targeted to achieve at least a 129.4 mpgUS rating. Charged from an external power source, it extends the cruising range in EV mode, maximizing the benefits as an environmentally-conscious vehicle. As the cruising distance of the PHEV increases, environmental benefits far surpass those of the regular Prius including lower CO2 emissions, smog forming emissions and reduced consumption of fossil fuels.

Approximate charging times from an ordinary household circuit are 3-hours at 100V and 1 hour and 40 minutes at 200V. Toyota has set a minimum BEV cruising range of at least 12-miles on a full charge. Enabling the vehicle to be recharged externally allows it to operate as an EV mode for short trips and as a standard fuel efficient HEV for longer ones. In other words, the Prius-III PHEV Concept is the ideal combination of an EV and a HEV for the near future.

Toyota plans to participate in the BEV & PHEV programs sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to encourage the widespread use of BEVs and PHEVs. The Prius-III PHEV Concept brings Toyota one step closer to the ultimate environmentally-considerate automobile.

FT-EV II Electric Vehicle - The Future of Mobility

The FT-EV II stands for "Future Toyota Electric Vehicle II". It is a concept car that was created from the Toyota Hybrid System technology in the pursuit of the ultimate environmentally-considerate vehicle. Its Li-Ion battery provides an AER of at least 54 miles on a full charge and a maximum speed in excess of 62 mph which are both more than enough to meet everyday needs. Since it is a full BEV, it is the most environmentally-considerate main stream automobile that Toyota can introduce.
Ultra-efficient package with body more compact than ultra-compact "iQ", but still with seating for four.

Drive-by-wire technology enables joystick operation of all functions including accelerator, brakes and steering wheel; ample legroom provided by elimination of accelerator and brake pedals.

Vehicle designed with low front cowl and auxiliary window below windshield for outstanding forward visibility; further consideration paid to safety around vehicle led to see-through LED rear combination taillights.
A distinctive, compact body with bright exterior colors has been designed in accordance with “Vibrant Clarity”, Toyota’s new Japanese design philosophy. The compact exterior and retro-futuristic interior feature designs evoke images of the future.

The vehicle has no steering wheel or foot pedals and has not been designed simply as a means of transport. The console incorporates communications functions to achieve a seamless link with information, expressing the new vehicle concept of the electric vehicle as an information device.

Enhanced communication functions enable the linking of individual drivers' information on a network allowing the vehicle to connect with services that go beyond car navigation including information tailored to the drivers music and movie preferences. Furthermore, the vehicle can connect to home networks to play a role in storing energy and saving large volumes of data, making the vehicle a new information device in the networked society of the future.

The FT-EV II is not simply an electric vehicle designed for a post-fossil fuel era, but is a sustainable concept car that focuses on the relationship between cars, people and society of the future.

The FT-EV II is primarily designed for short-distance travel and is positioned as a commuter vehicle for urban use, but as it integrates communications, it will become a device that can provide completely new links between vehicles and people.

The FT-86 ("86" pronounced "hachi roku"), a compact rear-wheel-drive sports car, provides driving excitement.

Over the past several years, the need for motor vehicles that take global warming and other environmental issues into account ahs risen. There are needs for sports cars that make the heart beat faster. According to Toyota, the time is right for a new generation of sports cars. In response to these needs, Toyota has developed the FT-86 Concept, a sports car equipped with a 2L boxer engine that evokes the pleasure of vehicle ownership.

The stylish concept captures the heart with the "functional utility" of its highly-refined body. It is the creation of Toyota Europe Design Development known as ED2, which has established body lines that take into consideration a low center of gravity and aerodynamics. The interior is distinctive, featuring an instrument panel with a gray and white base, gauges with red neon lights and digital displays, and a navigation system. In addition, a zipper that evokes an image of interior lapping with minimal covering of a highly-refined body presents a striking display.

As the name "Future Toyota 86 Concept" implies, the FT-86 Concept, which will be exhibited at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, is a new 86 Toyota with a flash red finish. It is a compact, rear-wheel drive sports concept car that embodies speed and the excitement of driving that give cars their appeal as well as environmental performance.

While interesting, the "out there" nature of the FT-EV II just shows how little commitment to production Toyota actually has for this vehicle. :(

I like the sport coupe concept, but do we really need another high powered guzzler?

Hi Sean:

___I was a bit disappointed in the FT-BEV-II myself as the handlebar controls WILL NEVER make it into production. A 10 mph accident and you are impaled by a handlebar... If Toyota would have maintained the iQ theme and simply converted it to a BEV as SMART has done with its ED, this could be a future production ready vehicle. As it sits, its just eye candy :(

___I was just glad to see new pics of the Prius-III PHEV and that is why I was excited to get this up so early in the morning.

___The Sports car... I almost skipped placing a pic in the list as it generates all the excitement of stale bread in my eyes

___Good Luck
