An interesting foray into luxury service. How much will this actually cost the company? --Ed.

If you are lucky enough to be the proud owner of the Tesla Roadster but live far away from one of the four dealers in the country, do not fret, Tesla Motors has you covered if your car needs service.

Hearkening back to a time long gone, and doing what physicians used to do in the good 'ol days, Tesla will do house calls to customer's homes or businesses, so an owner does not have to arrange to get it to the dealer. The reason for this is they do not want to have an over saturated market with multiple dealerships, such as seen with the big 3. This helps keep overhead costs down while providing personalized customer service. It also allows money to be put into car development. This personalized service is a key priority given the Tesla customer is spending a considerable amount of money, in the six-figure range. This level of service is not complimentary though, customers are charged "$1 for every roundtrip mile its technicians travel, from showroom to garage, with a minimum charge of $100 per trip." (Yahoo Finance/AP). The closest dealer locally is in Manhattan. The company tried this model already with a recall concern earlier in the year, customers were pleased. This program applies to not only new car purchases but is retroactive to previous purchasers.

Interesting concept. I wonder if they would either:

1) Travel with the tools and parts to handle pretty much anything.
2) Do enough diagnostics over the phone (maybe even letting the car do some of the talking) and travel with the parts and tools to handle whatever sounds most likely.
3) Take 1 trip to diagnose, then a second to make the repair.

I wonder if this will inspire others to go beyond the glass repair and oil change guys and take more service options on the road.

When the 1st Model T came out, it was the original DIYer Car. Came with a myriad of tools and some parts.

I think it's possible for Tesla to diagnose over the Internet if you can link the to the ECU thru OBD II/CAN BUS with Notebook computer and software. Aren't all vehicles required to have them by now?

Wouldn't that be awesome? Run Diagnostics and email them the Data.

Does the DOT mandate the OBD II / CAN BUS?
