2009 Mini Cooper - $19,500 to start (including destination), 32 mpgUS combined on the 08 EPA and very fun to drive.

Go-kart-driving fun, an interior that provides the maximum amount of car in the minimum amount of space and a myriad of personalization possibilities keep the 2010 MINI Cooper and Cooper S Hardtops on top of the small-car premium segment as sales continue to be strong.

The naturally-aspirated engine in the Cooper, also 1.6 liters, features fully-variable valve timing and control and accelerates to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds, with top speed of 126 mph. All the while achieving 37 mpgUS on the highway, the most of any non-hybrid other than the Micro Smart Fortwo.

During October, MINI dealers all over the US will join in the “Motor-Tober” spirit (a made up Mini holiday) by hosting local test drive events that encourage customers to spend time behind the wheel of the entire MINI lineup, including the Hardtop, Convertible and Clubman models.

Fuel Efficient Non-Hybrids

The “Big 7” fuel efficient non-hybrids September 2009 sales were down significantly from September 2008 with a decrease of 24% offsetting last months C4C gains of 44.3 percent. For the year, the fuel efficient non-hybrid group is down 25.8 percent. Very similar to the entire automobile market both for the month and for the year to date.

The compact class sales lead is still a back and forth battle with the former follower now the leader and the back and forth sales battle continues unabated... This month, it was the Corolla’s turn to take the reigns with a strong sales presence vs. its arch nemesis, the Civic.

For September, the Corolla was received by 20,741 new owners, a small decrease of just 6.6% compared to September of 2008. For the year, Corolla sales are off 22.8 percent.

The Civics September 2009 sales were not as vibrant with just 16,093 vehicles sold, a decrease of 28.4 percent vs. September 2008. YTD, Civic sales are off 26.9 percent.

The Honda Fit had a poor month but is extending its lead over its Toyota rival in the Yaris for B-Class sized Sub-compact sales leader. For the month, 3,284 vehicles were sold, a decrease of 51.6% vs. September 2008. For the year, sales are off 12.1 percent. A good showing considering the apparently (NOT) recovering automobile marketplace.

In September, the Yaris saw its most severe fall-off of the year with just 1,907 vehicles sold, a massive 68 percent decline vs. September of 2008. For the year, sales are off 42.4 percent.

The Mini is where the action was as sales were up 9.7% to 4,128 vehicles compared to the same period a year ago. For the year, sales are still off 14.0 percent.

September sales of the Chevrolet Aveo saw the C4C hangover in earnest as last months record selling sales of 12,733 turned into a dismal aftermath with just 1,906 vehicles sold, down 54.3 percent vs. Sept. of 08. For the year, Aveo sales are off 32.5 percent.

The Smart Fortwo’s popularity is quickly fading form its first year glory days. Just 814 vehicles were sold in September, down 42.2 percent from the year ago period. For the year, sales are off 31.6%.

Hybrid’s

Hybrids in September sales saw the 2010 Prius and Lexus RXh being purchased in volumes above their September 2008 sales achievements. The HS 250h had its best ever month but it is way too early to call this vehicle a success.

The “Big 6” not including the Insight-II, Fusion or HS hybrids September 2009 sales were down 21.5 percent from September 2008. For the YTD, hybrid sales as a whole were down a rather stark 29.3 percent vs. 2008 YTD.

The Toyota Prius posted sales of 10,984 in September; a decrease of 3.0 percent due to the extra day of sales even though total volume was up vs. September of 2008. For the year, sales are off by 19.4 percent YTD by comparison to 2008.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid has seen its better days with its worst showing in recent memory. Just 872 vehicles were purchased in September, down 69.9 percent from the same period a year ago. YTD, TCH total sales are off 52.9 percent.

The Honda Insight-II reported sales of 1,746 vehicles for the month, a large decline vs. the 4,226 vehicles sold last month thanks to C4C. This is in comparison to its normal sales of 2,000 – 2,800 per month from its launch earlier this year.

The Honda Civic Hybrid sales were decimated. Just 152 vehicles were sold, down 92.8% percent vs. September of 2008. For the year to date, sales are off 48.4 percent. Dealers cannot even order them for lack of supply so it appears as if Honda has all but given up on our most fuel efficient highway cruiser :ccry:

The Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrids posted total sales of 1,260 vehicles. For the year, 12,602 have been sold.

The Ford Escape Hybrid saw just 878 vehicles sold in September, down 14.9 percent vs. the same period a year ago. For 2009 YTD, total sales are off 10.3 percent.

The Lexus RX 450h had another good month by comparison to Sept. 2008 with 1,168 vehicles sold, up 50.7 percent. For 2009 YTD, total sales are off 18.9 percent.

A total of 1,011 GM hybrid vehicles were delivered in the month of September. So far, in 2009, GM has delivered 12,555 hybrid vehicles.

It's going to be a long winter if this isn't just C4C aftertaste.
