http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/2/European_Union_Flag.jpg Traffic beats the A3 TDI down a notch or two :( (cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=234978)

As the third and final wave of journalists head out for their first segment, they experience first hand the Czech Republic which places a significant amount of resources into monitoring traffic according to Audi. The first standstill begins just a few hundred feet after the border with the first heavy goods vehicle check point prior to a number of speed traps along the highway and trunk roads before culminating in Prague. Then there is the security for the Augustine Hotel which is located near the Czech parliament and is the group’s destination for the night. It is quickly learned by the participants that many Czech drivers have their own interpretations of their country’s traffic regulations ;)
As with any fuel economy challenge, added traffic control officers no matter the country or locale will not cause concern for the Audi Efficiency Challenge participants. Each day, they receive an average speed target that leaves no room for dawdling; although, today, this is difficult to calculate due to a number of construction zones along the way. Naturally, maintaining the respective speed limit is part of efficient driving, and today, the decent averages prove what we all know, following speed limits works :)
The Audi A3 1.6L TDI completed the difficult leg from Berlin to Prague with an average consumption of 63.5 mpgUS. The Audi A5 Sportback 2.0 TFSI achieved a decent 44.4 mpgUS.
From the centre of Berlin, the group had a short drive along the city’s grand boulevard, past Tempelhof Airport on the autobahn and then headed due south.
Lunch is served at Schloss Pillnitz. The summer residence in the south east of the city is yet another architectural treasure, and the Challenge vehicles line up in the garden for a perfect photo shoot. Following the Elbe upriver, the route takes the B172 to the Czech border and onwards to Prague. The Czech Republic lies in the heart of Europe, from a geographical, cultural and historical perspective. It has many faces; it is a land of opposites and equilibrium, a European microcosm.
The golden city on the Vltava is over 1,000 years old and includes a fully preserved cityscape with many of its architectural treasures still intact. The gigantic castle complex (Hradčany), Charles Bridge and its statues, the lively Wenceslas Square and the Guildhall in the Old Town with its astronomical clock are all historical highlights. The overnight quarters for the Efficiency Challenge, the Augustine Hotel in Prague’s “Lesser Quarter” incorporates part of the St. Thomas Augustine Monastery, which boasts a library dating back to the late Middle Ages.
Prague was founded in 1348 and includes Charles University, Central Europe’s first seat of higher education. Czechs, Jews and Germans lived together here. On September 30, 1989, the city played host to the beginning of the end of the Eastern Bloc when German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher stood on the balcony of the West German Embassy and told the refugees from the DDR that they were allowed to leave.
