By early evening, Germany’s election results were being finalized with Angela Merkel elected as Chancellor for another four years. Subdued celebration at the various government party headquarters was ongoing but on the streets Berlin, there was little fanfare. Either way, the Audi Efficiency Challenge group found there way through the eerily quiet streets to their final days destination at a hotel in the city center.
The sixth day of the Efficiency Challenge saw the second wave of drivers pass on the reigns to the third. From the rugged but beautiful Trondheim, Norway to the cityscape of Berlin, the drivers proved not only able to match the fuel economy ratings of their Audi’s but in many cases far exceed them...
The A3 Sportback 1.6L TDI pulled a best of the day 81.1 mpgUS and set a fuel economy record for the tour. The high-performance sports models were not to be left out as an Audi S4 achieved 30.1 mpgUS.
This segment began on Sunday morning in Copenhagen, Denmark and headed south along the E55 highway. Accompanied by the warm sunshine, the group crossed the suspension bridge connecting Seeland with the neighboring island of Falster. On Falster, the E55 turns into a country road and diverts from the Vogelfluglinie (migratory bird route), ending in Gedser. The town has less than 1,000 inhabitants, but represents an important ferry port to Germany. A Scandlines ship ferried the convoy to Warnemünde, taking a little under two hours to travel almost 31 miles.
Participants in the Efficiency Challenge have no interest in all that as they are fully focused on their efficient driving style. Even while on the German autobahn! The speed limits are vastly different from those in Scandinavia – something that is immediately apparent. The first traffic jam is also quick to make an appearance – although, thankfully, it is a small one. The route continues southwards past the Mecklenburg lake district and its natural parks, heading for the next big city.
Berlin! Capital of Germany, 344 square miles and 3.4 million inhabitants. Berlin is known as one of Europe’s greatest cultural centers but also as a tourist attraction. Berlin has great history, architecture, extensive recreational facilities and a dazzling nightlife. Only the wall is gone, apart from three last pieces.
Participants of the Efficiency Challenge spend the night in the Hotel de Rome on Behrenstraße in the heart of the city. The city’s great structures are only a stone’s throw from here – the State Opera House, the Arsenal, the Historical Museum and the Museum Island, the Maxim-Gorki Theatre, the Cathedral, the Schinkel Museum, the Brandenburger Gate and the Reichstag parliament building. Potsdamer Square and the St. Nicholas Quarter – the heart of Berlin – are also within walking distance. From the sparkling hi-tech architecture to the restored cosy atmosphere of the Old Town – that, too, is one of the many contrasts presented by the city of Berlin. And is, in its own right, a journey from A to B.
The recently arrived participants of the third group appear to have barely any interest in the landmarks but instead spend the evening in celebration with the victors of the second wave.
