Perspective on the Audi A3 1.6L TDI.
A sensation envelops some participants on Saturday as the route from Oslo via Gothenburg to Copenhagen feels like a return to civilization and a familiar way of life. This includes four lane highways, speeds of more than 60 mph, industrial areas left and right and a gently rolling landscape that is quite different than the rugged scenery of the preceding days drive. The higher speeds do not help efficiency unfortunately. The star of the event, the new Audi A3 1.6L TDI, achieved the days best at 71 mpgUS. The Audi A4 2.0 TDI e also achieved an excellent average over the 388 mile segment, this time at 53.4 mpgUS.
Today, the Audi TT 2.0 TDI pulled an exceptional consumption figure of 46 mpgUS! This is the most efficient way there is to drive a real sports car :D With exactly double the power, its big brother, the Audi TT RS, completed the day with an average of 34 mpgUS. Intelligent lightweight aluminum construction with both a TDI and TFSI powertrain is paying off for Audi.
On day 5, the Audi Efficiency Challenge group left Norway on the E6 continuing to run southwards along the Baltic Sea coast.
Road construction and poor weather were a Day 5 letdown after the sunny Friday afternoon drive to Oslo. This gives us hope for the next day; perhaps, the Challenge participants will get their share of the late summer heat wave in which Germany has been basking for days?
After 54 miles, the entourage reached Sweden. The four lane highway becomes a real Interstate with maximum speed limits as high as 75 mph. Really fast after four days in Norway ;) The rocky coastline with offshore islands and archipelagos still dominates the scenery however. Near Udevalla, two of Swedish superlatives are virtually side by side – the longest fjord, the 15-mile long Gullmaren, and the largest lake; with 2,148 square mile Lake Väner’s.
Gothenburg has a population of 500,000 and is Sweden’s second largest city. The port on the Kattegat was founded in 1619. In the 18th century it began brisk trade with England and the Far East. Alongside the intimate alleyways of the old town, criss-crossed by narrow canals, Gothenburg offers two universities, a modern opera house and Scandinavia’s largest windjammer – the 386 ft. long four-mast “Viking”, built in 1906. The table is set for lunch in Langedrag Vertshus, to the south west of the city.
The E6 continues southwards to Schonen, Sweden’s most southerly land. The gently rolling countryside, with its rich, loamy soil is the country’s agricultural area. The Fredriksdal open-air museum near Helsingborg tells its story.
For the time being, the most important structure in the region is the Öresund Bridge, which opened on 1 July 2000. It measures 4.8-miles in length with trains running on its lower level and four lanes of cars on the upper. The central element is the High Bridge, which lets ships up to 212 feet above the water. The bridge’s impressive pylons reach over are 673 feet into the sky. Heading west, the bridge ends on a man-made island in the Öresund and from there the journey continues through a tunnel to the Danish mainland.
The crossing is definitely worth it – Copenhagen, with its population of 500,000, is one of Scandinavia’s most attractive cities. Founded in the 13th century, the Danish capital now retains its 18th century baroque and classical appearance. The Christiansborg Castle, which is the seat of parliament, originates from the 1920s. Alongside is the renaissance complex of the Old Stock Exchange.
The romantic Nyhavn Street is a gastronomic centre, and on the promenade near the fortress, the Little Mermaid has been looking sadly out over the water for the last 96 years. The statue commemorating the legendary fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen stands just 4 ft. high. The Tivoli Gardens opposite the Central Station are an old recreational classic.
