These videos depict a senseless battle of hybrids and a diesel... care to guess what the final results are? I could not believe it either.
Too bad the FE results were likely rock-bottom.:(
I'll let the videos do the talking:
A race pitting the Gen 2 Prius vs Gen 2 Civic Hybrid vs Gen 2 Insight vs a Toyota IQ

A race pitting the Gen 3 Prius vs Gen 2 Insight vs a TSI Golf

That's actually what I'd expect from a tight roadcourse like that.
One of the many reasons that racers don't use full-time parallel hybrid systems.

The thing that surprised me was not the fact that the Prius out accelerated the competition. No, there's been much video evidence that confirms the Prius besting its counterparts.
What surprised me is what happens as the laps unfold and the resulting positions for each vehicle. Very interesting indeed.

From my experience with the Prius, it seems like its handling would put it at a disadvantage in such a matchup.

Awesome! The results confirm a lot of my experience, having recently driven 3 of these cars:
That's just embarrassing how many carlengths the Prius got ahead of the Insight off the line in the second video. No surprise, but no help once you're past the first lap.
I'm also not surprised the Insight eventually pulled ahead of the other hybrids -- better handling/roadholding and more GO once it is up to track speed.
I'm pleasantly surprised how closely the iQ stuck with the others.
Not surprising the Golf TSI stomped both the Insight and the Prius. A Golf TDI would have been a closer match, both in terms of track performance and fuel usage. My gas Jetta could hang well with this crowd, but I think my nose-heavy Golf TDI (with an acceleration profile more like the Prius than the Insight) would have a hard time keeping up. With 50% more power than mine a new TDI Golf might be a good match though. Or maybe still overmatched.
Hilarious hearing all the tires squeal like pigs as these economy cars rounded the tight bends.
It would also be at least interesting to compare the fuel economy of each car under these conditions.
