A3 and A3 Sportback now join the 62 mpgUS club.
The new A3 powered by a four-cylinder TDI delivers 105 HP at 4,400 rpm and 184 lb-ft. between 1,500 and 2,500 from a displacement of 1,598 cc. With the 1.6L TDI, the A3 propels the three-door from 0 to 62 mph in 11.2 seconds with a top speed of 118 mph. More importantly however, the A3 achieves an Audi first, 61.90 mpgUS combined on the NEDC due to new technology. Namely, Start-stop.
During braking and coasting phases, the energy-recovery system intelligently controls the alternator to recover energy, which is temporarily stored in the battery. This energy is then fed back into the electrical system during acceleration — thus reducing the load on the alternator saving fuel.
Additionally, the A3 includes five-speed MT featuring a seven percent taller final drive ratio and a gear-change indicator in the instrument cluster helps the driver to select the proper gear for improved fuel economy.
The new Audi A3 1.6 TDI models boast even more innovations from Audi’s Modular Efficiency Platform. The vehicle’s body is slightly lower to the ground reducing the frontal area plus includes specially designed aero covers on the body and the underbody reducing aerodynamic drag. The 195/65 R15 tires excel via especially low rolling resistance.
Audi will begin selling the A3 1.6 TDI in the first half of 2010. Prices will be similar to those models already on the market which offer the same performance.
