View Full Version : Week of August 31st - September 6th (Nat Avg $2.62)
Right Lane Cruiser 08-31-2009, 06:20 AM Welcome back to the grind!
I'm driving the Elantra today and tomorrow since I have to pick up my daughter from her grandmother's house after work.
44F, 1mph headwind from the SW, clear:
63.6mpg for 22.2mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 64.9mpg over 280.6mi with 11.7g left and the guess gauge is indicating 15/16.
diamondlarry 08-31-2009, 07:03 AM Well, it looks like I'm going to have to move several hundred miles to my north to get the warm temps.:p This completely non-summer is getting absurd. I had 43°F this August 31st. morning and no wind. My daily average is at 86.7 mpg.
78.9 6.9
96.2 6.9
PaleMelanesian 08-31-2009, 08:13 AM 66 degrees in Texas, 72.8 mpg. My tank is down 1/10 to 73.3 / 554 miles and just barely below 1/2 on the gauge.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-31-2009, 08:21 AM Hm... I'm going to have to try harder to catch Andrew. ;)
PaleMelanesian 08-31-2009, 09:09 AM On a % basis, you're already ahead.
basjoos 08-31-2009, 12:27 PM Refilled for the first time since installing the B15Z1 (VX lean burn) engine in my car and got 81.2 mpg over 438 miles of mostly interstate driving. Its been up to 75mph on a level road without it dropping out of lean burn. It was showing 5 usec on the SuperMID, the ceiling for lean burn is at 6.1 usec, so I still have some headroom left at that speed. I'll have to find a highway with a higher PSL before I can continue trying to find the upper speed limit for lean burn operation (the max speed will probably will be RPM limited rather than load limited for lean burn). On a flat road, its getting 100mpg at 55mph and 120mpg at 35mph. It the car has the correct shape, you don't need a hybrid system to get good mileage on the highway. I think even an Insight-I would be hard pressed to match my highway mileage at normal highway speeds now.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-31-2009, 12:33 PM Pretty impressive!
55mph is about the max I can sustain 100mpg on flat land with no wind in my Insight. I don't drive faster than that (unless I'm on a downhill and need the speed to mount another hill) so I don't know what the mileage is like at higher speeds. What were you seeing for instantaneous at 75mph?
Looks like I might be able to outdo you at the lower speeds. 35mph in 5th gear on level ground and no wind is good for over 130mpg in my car.
PaleMelanesian 08-31-2009, 12:42 PM Sorry Sean, but you'll have to switch cars to beat me today. :D;)
76.8 mpg home for lunch
100 mpg back to work, warmed up, 10 mph tailwind, and 83 degrees. Avg speed 25 mph, including stops, on 35, 45 and 55 mph roads. Max speed 45 mph.
This brings my tank up to 73.7 mpg / 575 miles.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-31-2009, 12:51 PM Nicely done, Andrew!! :woot:
Let's see... that's 282% EPA for your car.
Looks like I'd have to hit 82mpg to exceed that in the Elantra -- no way am I going to hit 100mpg in the Elantra at anything over 0.4mi glide! What distance did you pull that off over?
lxmike 08-31-2009, 02:06 PM you guys make my measly 42-43 mpg trips look like you could do them in your sleep.
diamondlarry 08-31-2009, 03:04 PM We ended up with a sweltering 68°F for this last day of August. Nice try weather guessers. The wind has been NE@ 5 mph or less.
78.9 6.9-to wife's work
96.2 6.9-back home
94.0 6.3-to wife's work
110 6.3-back home
Average for today was 93.2 mpg.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-31-2009, 03:57 PM I couldn't hang onto the 71mpg average I had on the way over to pick up my daughter. :p
70F, 7mph cross/headwind from the WSW, sunny:
66.2mpg for 24.7mi (Work to home via mother-in-law's house)
The tank is back up to 65.0mpg over 305.3mi with 11.3g left and the guess gauge still indicates 15/16.
Day Total: 65.0mpg over 47.0mi
I've still got a trip to and from the doctor yet to make.
PaleMelanesian 08-31-2009, 04:09 PM "baby on board" has a way of lowering the average, doesn't it? :p
Right Lane Cruiser 08-31-2009, 04:12 PM Just a tad. ;)
DavidRN85 08-31-2009, 06:14 PM What a horrid day today. Driving to work this morning it was 48F :mad:
Somehow managed 48.6mpg driving to work with approx 10mph headwind
Driving home was a little better, calm conditions, 74F, 56.2mpg
On another note, refueled on Sunday, 842.4miles at 16.4 gallons. Another 51mpg tank.
Oh and changed the oil too, what a pain has plastic cover over the bottom of the engine, had to remove to plates to get to the oil filter and plug, took forever. But now have 0W-20 Mobil 1 and a fresh filter.
This will be a short tank, I'll be refueling on friday for a long labor day trip, should drive around 700 miles almost all highway, want to see how much is in the tank when I drive home on monday evening.
Right Lane Cruiser 08-31-2009, 06:36 PM Well, I couldn't quite pull off over 60mpg both ways. :p
71F down, 6mph wind from the SW, sunny,
70F back, 7mph wind from the S, still sunny:
62.6mpg for 3.7mi (Home to doctor's office)
59.9mpg for 4.1mi (Doctor's office to home )
The tank is back down a tick to 64.9mpg over 313.3mi with 11.2g left and the guess gauge still indicates about 15/16.
Day Total: 64.4mpg over 54.8mi

Looks like you learned your lesson and didn't push this time.:D
Right Lane Cruiser 08-31-2009, 06:49 PM Looks like you learned your lesson and didn't push this time.:D
You just had to get that little dig in, didn't you? :p
Actually, I've never had a lot of luck trying to push my Elantra on the side of the driveway. I think I managed to move it a total of 4" one time. :o
diamondlarry 08-31-2009, 06:56 PM You just had to get that little dig in, didn't you? :p
I do what I can.:p It was just a quick reminder of the "digging" you'd get if you injured yourself again; I dig only in a loving way. Yeah...yeah...that's it.:p
Die2self 08-31-2009, 07:21 PM 2 work (son was sick so no drop off)
- 21.4 / 13.4 (59F  and calm) included cold fluids and 2 stops not expected by traffic
home >
- 24.7 / 13.1 (69F E@8)
daily avg - 23.0 over 26 miles (SG is steady at 23.4) 31 days over 22.5
tank is just above 1/8 at 382.2 miles (SG says I have 138 miles left)
basjoos 08-31-2009, 07:59 PM Pretty impressive!

Looks like I might be able to outdo you at the lower speeds. 35mph in 5th gear on level ground and no wind is good for over 130mpg in my car.
This shows the effect of aero drag on mileage. At 35mph, the smaller and lighter Insight gets the better mileage as expected. At 55mph as aero becomes more important, mileage becomes the same. At higher speeds, the aerocivic should get better mileage than the Insight, especially once you exceed a speed where the Insight drops out of lean burn while the aerocivic still remains in lean burn.
Right Lane Cruiser 09-01-2009, 06:18 AM 48F, no wind, clear:
68.6mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work)
The tank is up to 65.2mpg over 335.7mi with 10.8g left and the guess gauge indicates about 13/16.
diamondlarry 09-01-2009, 06:50 AM I had 46°F this morning and there was no wind. The day average is at 92.6 mpg.

PaleMelanesian 09-01-2009, 08:25 AM Last night:

88.6 / 12.2 - to a friend's house to help with some renovations.
72.8 / 13 - back home late at night
77.8 / 10.7 this morning
Tank is now up to 73.9 / 622 miles and approaching 1/4 on the gauge.
Right Lane Cruiser 09-01-2009, 12:52 PM Had lunch with a good friend at an unfamiliar restaurant location.
67F up, 1mph tailwind from the S, sunny,
70F back, 12mph headwind from the S, still sunny:
51.8mpg for 4.4mi (Work to restaurant... couldn't figure out how to get into the lot at first! :o)
64.8mpg for 4.2mi (Restaurant back to work -- better when I know the route despite the headwind and trolling the lot for a slot! :D)
The tank is back down to 64.9mpg over 344.3mi with 10.7g left and the guess gauge indicates one needle width under 13/16.
Day Total: 65.1mpg over 31.0mi
PaleMelanesian 09-01-2009, 01:06 PM Lunch with a "good friend". ;)
45.2 mpg / 1.6 miles there - straight from parking lot to 55 mph to parking lot again.
64.4 mpg / 2.6 mi back - taking the side roads instead.
lxmike 09-01-2009, 02:58 PM Trying a diff route home from work now. the last set of traffic lights I come to is always red and I end up sitting there. So I'm taking the flyover and fas'ing into the shopping center and rolling through there. It adds a lil distance to my trip though... resulted in 46.1 mpg on ride home.
diamondlarry 09-01-2009, 03:08 PM We're up to 70°F and the wind is NE@ 5 mph. The daily is up to 97.2 mpg. I have ~10 miles left to go and I only need to get 110 mpg for the rest of the day to hit the 100 mpg mark.

90.7 6.3
92.2 5.8
117 6.9
diamondlarry 09-01-2009, 03:49 PM My car is doing it's Insight wanabe routine again and I'm lovin' it!:D The daily is up to 100.2 mpg. I think I can hit at least 95 mpg on the way back home.;)

72F, 10mph tailwind from the SSE, sunny:

The tank is back up to 65.2mpg over 368.7mi with 10.3g left and the guess gauge still shows one needle width under 13/16.

Pretty good job at that.:flag:
I think that went really well.:) The temperature is at our high of 70°F and the wind is ENE@ 5mph and under. Segment 5 is a new PR!:woot:

- 24.8 / 11.9 miles (77F Variable@5)
- 24.0 / 1.2 miles (amazing the same way to school, but with a hot engine and even up hill)
daily avg - 23.6 over 26.5 miles (32 days over 22.5)
tank is down to 23.3 (SG) but according to Avg of the days it is 23.8??
1/8 tank left with 409.1 miles (SG says I have 109 miles left ans 4.7 gals to fumes)
diamondlarry 09-02-2009, 06:51 AM Another chilly morning with 44°F and no wind. The daily average sits at 93.8 mpg. I will probably have a couple of trips this evening on my prime FE route. My daughter has mentioned wanting to start going again to her Wednesday night youth group meeting at Church. These are usually good for 90-100+ mpg. Here's something interesting I just realized: I only used yesterday the amount of fuel that would fit in to a 44oz Big Gulp. I like to think of it more as "a little sip.":p
90.7 6.9
97.2 6.9
PaleMelanesian 09-02-2009, 08:23 AM 70.9 home last night, 85 degrees
72.2 this morning, 66 degrees. I was not on my 'A' game, it could have been better.
This drops the tank down a tenth to 73.7 / 649 miles.
cpeter38 09-02-2009, 11:23 AM I've been struggling lately - I made the mistake of changing my calibration on the SGII according to the recommendation for fill amount. I think it is overcompensating, but there is no way I will know until I have more miles. I'm 156 miles into the tank and it is still pegged on full.
I know I should be reasonably happy w/280% of EPA, but having achieved better FE, it really is a daily grind. I hope my guess is correct that I just had some bad gas on the last tank ...
Die2self 09-02-2009, 01:38 PM no numbers from me today as I am staying home with a sick kid.
I guess I saved 1.+ gals of gas though :D and another day longer on this tank of gas.
diamondlarry 09-02-2009, 03:01 PM I'm up to 99.3 mpg for the day. I potentially have ~20 miles of driving left that will be on my 100+ mpg route.:)
90.7 6.9
97.2 6.9
96.7 5.9
115 7.0
Right Lane Cruiser 09-02-2009, 03:30 PM In order to make sure Blue Swayed doesn't sit unused too long I took a short trip to the bank and back.
73F, 10mph wind from the SE, sunny:
90.2mpg over 4.9mi (Home to bank and back)
The tank is back down to 105.0mpg over 369.7mi
Back to packing...
PaleMelanesian 09-02-2009, 03:41 PM Have a great trip! I hope the little princess handles traveling well.

Looks like my car's Insight imitation may pay off for today.:p:D
lxmike 09-02-2009, 06:10 PM My new route home resulted in lil over 43 mpg. temps here haven't been as hot as they usualy are this time of year. usualy we're still in the 90's and it was ONLY 86 on ride home. I screwed up and reset my sg fill amount , so I refuled sat night and then I forgot to reset my odometer in the car! :o
aaronl 09-02-2009, 11:25 PM 48.6 MPG for the day, much better than I expected. Mix of freeway and city driving, with some rush-hour traffic thrown in. Again, no advanced tactics to brag about, just shifting early and focusing on the road and the car. I've had this car for exactly 2 months, but I think the fact that I haven't even logged a tank yet is a decent excuse for not being fully comfortable with the transmission, and not burdening myself with advanced techniques.
Tank is supposedly at 47.4 MPG over about 335 miles. I'm eager to refuel and see if these numbers hold up. My guess is that the true number will be at least 42 MPG, hopefully better.
diamondlarry 09-03-2009, 06:27 AM Another chilly morning at 46°F and no wind. The daily average is at 97.2 mpg.
95.8 7.0
98.6 6.9
My daughter ended up staying home last night so yesterday's average was 99.3 mpg.
PaleMelanesian 09-03-2009, 08:10 AM 73.0 home last night
80.4 this morning. :D
That brings my tank up a notch to 73.8 / 670 miles. See-saw by a tenth back and forth. :o
diamondlarry 09-03-2009, 03:35 PM It's amazing what some nice weather will do for the FE. We ended up with a high of 77°F and the wind was ENE@ 5 mph.
95.8 7.0-to wife's work
98.6 6.9-back home
95.3 5.9-to wife's work
103 11.6-wife's work to my mom's
153 4.6-back home
Average for today was 103.6 mpg. The guess-gauge is reading 5 pips at just over 600 miles. FCD is reading 93.9 mpg for the tank.
Die2self 09-03-2009, 08:37 PM 2 school/work>
- 13.1 / 1.2 miles (63F SE@7)

daily avg = 24.4 over 26.4 miles (SG says I am steady at 23.3, yeah right:rolleyes:)
tank is just above the E with 435.9 miles (SG says I have 82.6 miles left on 3.6 gals)
diamondlarry 09-04-2009, 06:44 AM We started with 52°F and no wind. The daily average is at 93.8 mpg for now. With just under 650 miles on the tank, the MFD is reporting 93.9 mpg with 5 pips showing on the guess-gauge.
86.9 6.9
102 6.9
PaleMelanesian 09-04-2009, 08:08 AM 70.0 last night with a nasty headwind
80.4 this morning, less wind and nicely humid.
That leaves my tank steady at 73.8 mpg / 697 miles and down to 1/4 on the gauge.
diamondlarry 09-04-2009, 12:52 PM We're up to 74°F and there is no windspeed being measured. The daily average id up to 104.5 mpg. Tonight is my grocery run so I will have one more segment similar to segment 5 below but the extra traffic going to the store could easily erase those gains.
86.9 6.9
102 6.9

PaleMelanesian 09-04-2009, 12:57 PM I went home for lunch. Mid-90's temperature.
72.2 mpg there,
91.4 mpg back.
The tank average clicked up 3/10 to 74.1 and 718 miles.
diamondlarry 09-04-2009, 05:34 PM The shopping trip almost killed the average but I threw the book at it and caught some traffic breaks.:) We ended up with a high of 77°F and wind was SSE@ <5 mph
86.9 6.9-to wife's work
102 6.9-back home
97.8 6.0-to fill out job app

100 11.3-wife's work to Meijer
100 12.2-Meijer to my mom's
155 4.6-mom's to home
Average for today was 104.6 mpg. The FCD is showing 94.2 mpg at ~700 miles with 4 pips on the guess-gauge. I went down to 4 pips at ~680 miles. It looks like I have real good shot at my 1200+ mile tank if I can keep this up. I don't know if it's just coincidence or not but, it seems my FE numbers start to get noticeably better when I get down to the 1/2 tank mark.
diamondlarry 09-05-2009, 02:06 PM A very good day for FE today.:flag: We had 76°F and the wind was E@ 5-10 mph.
100 13.6-home to store for softener salt with a quick drop off of my wife at my mom's to mow the grass
116 7.3-store to gas station in Wakarusa to get Gatorade for my wife

159 4.6-mom's to home
Average for today was 113.7 mpg.
Die2self 09-05-2009, 04:18 PM I had to leave quickly after getting home yesterday so I have not been able to get the numbers in. Also had a fillup but was only able to get 23.9 out of it. I will post the numbers when I get back home and see what I was able to get with honda accord on the trip.
diamondlarry 09-06-2009, 10:16 AM With a temperature of 65°F and wind E@ 5 mph, I ended up with 92.4 mpg for the day. I was robbed of yet another 100+ mpg today because of an accidentally unplugged cord for the EBH.:ccry: What was so frustrating was that it still appeared plugged in but was pulled out just enough that it didn't make contact.
73.3 4.9
126 4.8
Die2self 09-07-2009, 09:11 PM Well the trip was fine but I hoped for better FE.
We had to have a tire fixed Friday before we could leave, they found 2 nails in it (it had been leaking 5 psi every 2 days.) after pumping it back up to 45 (they had only put in 32 si) on the way out of town and filling it up (wife got 34 MPG on the tank).
So up 71 to KC and then 435 West to K10 to Lawrance. Mostly 70 MPH higways, so I was on CC at 58 for most of it except when I could coast. AC was on for the family and some showers and wet roads
Drove around town just a little and to Topeka to visit the Zoo (more 58 MPH and coasting when I could)
Back home tonight same thing but with no rain and 1 stop for little bladders. :)
462.2 miles on 12.431 Gals = 37.2 MPG not bad but was expecting higer. I guess if I want higher I will have to put the SG in next time. But I don't want to loose all the data for the truck. The Car is only suppose to get 31 on the Hwy according to EPA and 29 Combined. Next set of tires will NOT be Firestones!!
Skwyre7 09-08-2009, 06:55 AM Two days last week I drove my normal afternoon commute from my house to the baby sitter's to pick up my son. This is an all-city route during rush hour with at least 16 stoplights. I am pleased to report that two days in a row, I achieved 50+ MPG runs! It's a great feeling when you get the light timing just right! :D
