The Audi A3 and A3 Sportback 1.2 TFSI are rated at 42.8 mpgUS combined on the NEDC (~ 35 mpgUS combined on the 08 EPA).
Audi will unveil a special new vehicle at Frankfurt’s International Motor Show (IAA). Namely the exceptionally efficient A3 1.2 TFSI. The innovative engine embodies Audi’s conviction that dynamics and efficiency are not mutually exclusive; on the contrary, they go hand in hand and are mutually complementary.
Efficient Downsizing: Audi A3 and A3 Sportback 1.2 TFSI
Downsizing is a cornerstone of Audi’s efficiency strategy — and Audi is relentlessly committed. The A3 model line will soon introduce yet another turbocharged gasoline engine featuring lower displacement. It unites maximum performance with minimum consumption.
Designed from scratch, the new 1.2 TFSI generates 105 HP from a displacement of 1.197L. Typical of Audi’s TFSI program over the years, direct gasoline injection and turbocharging complement one another. Thanks to an aluminum crankcase, this four-cylinder engine weighs just 197 pounds; this remarkably low weight also boosts efficiency.
The 1.2 TFSI has been optimized to minimize friction. Eight valves are actuated by a SOHC. A low pressure common-rail system injects the fuel. All electric control valves operate the turbocharger’s wastegate; boost pressure builds up spontaneously and scavenging losses drop.
This small engines 105 HP is just one part of the story. This 1.2L generates 129 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm helping to propel the three-door A3 1.2 TFSI to 60 in less than 11 seconds with a top speed of 118 mph. More importantly, the 1.2L is rated at 42.8 mpgUS on the NEDC (~ 35 mpgUS combined on the 08 EPA) on gasoline.
European sales of the A3 and A3 Sportback 1.2 TFSI will begin in the first quarter of 2010. The new engine will initially be paired with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission.
