Michael Martin fording a river in Iceland on his trusty 09 BMW 1200 GS Adventure - $16,750 to start and a steady 51 mpg at 56 mph.,750.00
Since 1991, motorcycle adventurer and desert expert, Michael Martin has ridden to the ends of the earth with a variety of BMW GS’. His bike travels have taken him from the source of the Nile, across Africa and across desert regions of three Continents including Asia, Australia and America.
The 46-year-old Munich native now wants to go one step further by crossing the dry deserts of ice and volcanic outcrops while riding a 2009 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure across the world.
The project, Desert Planet, intends to introduce us to our relationship with the earth in both pictures and words with an emphasis on global climate change.
The project began earlier this month in the volcanic deserts of Iceland. After an extended lecture tour this fall, Michael will set out next March to the icy wastes of Greenland and northern Siberia comparing the dry deserts, ice producing glaciers and volcanically active deserts together.
Michael Martin and his BMW R 1200 GS Adventure are already familiar with crossing the Sahara, Gobi and Atacama deserts. Regions he will be exploring during this adventure will include the Saudi desert, Rub al Kahli, the Patagonian wilderness, Kamchatka or the Tibetan Chang Tang in order to document life in all of its fascinating forms.
Finally, he will continue across the icy wastes of Antarctica with a final destination at the South Pole in early 2012.

The BMW 1200 GS Adventure taking Michael to places never before ridden or driven in many cases.
The BMW R 1200 GS Adventure Michael will be riding is OEM stock other than a BMW supplied Touratech luggage system, ceramic clutch, GPS, high beams and a skid plate to protect the oil pan.
Michael will be traveling without escort or external film team thus ensuring the highest authenticity and adventure. The latest film and photographic technology plus decades of experience should provide professional and exceptional results.

Absolutely stunning pics of the ice deserts.
Highlights of his career include lectures at the Royal Geographical Society in London, the world climate conference in Montreal, at the UN meeting in Tokyo and the UN Desert Conference in Buenos Aires. In 2006, Martin had the honor to make the official calendar of the UNCCD and the UN climate secretariat. His picture book "Deserts of the Earth - 365 days" was the official companion book of the UN desert year. This work was translated into six languages.
The film "The Deserts of the Earth" took over five years to produce and has been seen in over 30 countries with great fanfare.
This October, his nationwide book and lecture tour "30 year Adventure" reveals his most recent trip to Iceland with a hint to this latest project, “Desert Planet”.
In the fall of 2014, a worldwide publication of the illustrated book, a TV series and plans for a new presentation will be launched. The project is supported by the desert planet of the Royal Geographic Society, the UNCCD, the desert, the United Nations Secretariat, as well as BMW motorcycles.
