Chicago had its first measurable snowfall today. The earliest in history. Talking with Pravus in chat got me thinking. What are some of the more environmentally friendly ways to clear snow that would require more than a shovel?

Ohf'krissake. One reason I moved up to Boston was that I *like*
shoveling snow. Sure, the lone human can't do it quite as fast
as various mechanized means, but there's still something gratifying
about getting that "perfect carve" while redefining the boundaries
of one's driveway based entirely on how much work one is willing
to put into it. It's a utilitarian art form.

Heh. Well, it is fun if your parking lot isn't that big. But there are times when one man can't do it all and when your slave labor... Err children are too small to help out.

At home I use a leaf blower. Cleans the driveway and the car. On the road I use a 2 piece Ryobi snowblower. Broken down ii fits in the back of the insight. you youngens can use a shovel. When you get old and broken down don't come crying to me.

No doubt Wayne would default into a P&G routine:D , so effectivly the volume of snow actually removed would depend on how much snow is falling at the time:eek: .

Unless you are able to talk him into steady state, you could be losing ground.:)

___To hell w/ P&G, I send the kids out to shovel snow :D

___In all actuality, I used to use the ATV w/ a plow for our 150 footer but have gone back to the old fashioned way and my back is breaking because of it. Getting the kids involved is sometimes like pulling teeth :(

Holy crap!

We could cover the roads so that the snow didn't fall on the road to begin with. Snow don't fall on tunnels!

Or maybe they could make a snow blower that clears two 8 inch wide tracks instead of the whole road. A hypermiling snowblower? Then we just drive in the tracks until the snow melts? ;-)

My preferred method is a margarita, some Jimmy Buffet in the iPod, and a good shovel. Trust me, once you get Buffet cranked and a good sweat going, you lose track that it's 25F.

Man, that thing's a beast! 2 passes and my driveway would be done -- then you could start on the street :D

I love the "Hybrid" sticker -- the neighbors ask, "I didn't know Honda made a Hybrid Snowblower."

Playing it up..."Yup, gas/electric. I usually get about 1200 steps per gallon"

Neighbor, "Wow, mine only gets 880"

I'm with hobbit on this one. I guess I don't have a huge amount to shovel, but I have the driveway up to a 3 car garage and sidewalk on two sides of my yard (I'm on a corner). During heavy snows, I just shovel multiple times while it is still coming down. I think I may need to get a new, more ergonomical, snow shovel. This should help avoid any lower back strain.

I believe our first measureable snowfall was on October 17. When I first moved to the area in 97, we had a snowfall on October 24 that gave us over 30 inches. I love snow.
