The unique BMW 320d EfficientDynamics sedan is rated at 57.4 mpgUS combined on the NEDC with an engine capable of producing 163 HP according to the manufacturer.

BMW is creating a moving target with quarterly updates that continue to improve the fuel economy of their latest and greatest European SuperDiesels. Additionally, BMW maintained the performance and handling dynamics of a vehicle worthy of wearing the BMW moniker. The new BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition will be presented for the first time at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine included in the “d” includes an all-aluminum crankcase, turbocharging with variable intake geometry and common-rail direct fuel injection complete with piezo-injectors. With the engine and the entire car modified for an even higher standard of efficiency compared to the standard 320d, this sedan targets the Europeans with improved aerodynamics, an extra-tall final drive, and an innovative two-mass flywheel incorporating a centrifugal-force pendulum.

The upcoming 320d EfficientDynamics Edition will be BMW’s most fuel efficient automobile once released. In the fiercely contested compact segment, the 320d is a very attractive premium fuel miser for the driver focusing on superior fuel economy without foregoing the sporting driving characteristics of a BMW.

The improved efficiency offered by existing BMW 3 Series models using EfficientDynamics are currently superior to their competitors and their latest, the new 320d EfficientDynamics, takes the BMW brand to an entirely new level when it comes to environmental performance.

We need that car here, please !!!!!!!!!!!

I like my hchii, but would love to get a BMW with that fuel mileage

Wow, the BMW 3-series must be very different in Europe.

Yes, they have a huge lineup of models and engines there, from a 116hp diesel to a 306hp twin turbo gasoline.

If there just wasn't a urea tank. I like the TDI system a lot better.

I actually am starting to like the urea tank. It's a little more maintenance -- but filling an extra tank every oil change doesn't seem too challenging. The efficiency tradeoff to meet emissions without urea bugs me a little.

yea since the NON urea system has regen mode, and the car hates to be driven on cold starts.

The urea system has DPF regenerations too, but they are less frequent. The urea engines have less focus on in-cylinder NOx reduction than the VW 2.0 TDI. This has a couple effects. First, it helps the efficiency a little compared to the EGR method needed to cut NOx in the engine. Second, the extra EGR leads to more particulates. Finally, NOx can be used to help passively regenerate the particulate filter, requiring less active regenerations where fuel is injected. Since the urea engines make more NOx, this means they generally have less active particulate filter regenerations.

I have read that a SCR system is also more compatible with fuel injectors in the exhaust stream, but haven't figured out why yet. Putting a fuel injector there means post injection for regenerating particulate filters isn't needed, allowing higher concentrations of biodiesel.

Finally, meeting emissions without SCR needs some expensive catalysts. Purely hypothesizing here, but I am wondering if we would have a TSX diesel here today if Honda had decided to go with SCR.

Yes, BMW - we need this in the US. Please bring a manual, Touring (wagon) version. I don't think urea injection is much of an issue - the main down side is space for the extra tank.
