I'm now on my third tank of fuel in the new Fusion Hybrid. I've achieved 40.5 MPG on the first two tanks and expect further improvement with the third. Compared to my 1998 F-150 at 14-16 MPG on average, I'm highly satisfied.
My commute to work is 13.3 miles and I consistently achieve 47-49 MPG on the commute. I've had a high of 53 MPG and a low of 43 MPG. It largely depends on how many red lights I encounter. I've found that a 10 minute delay in leaving the house has a great effect of gas mileage (the earlier the better where I live).
I'm also finding that faster driving can actually achieve better MPG on my commute (45 mph versus 35 mph). It's kind of counterintuitive sometimes, but before purchasing the Fusion I never really gave any of this much thought at all. Also choosing when to shift to neutral and when not to has an effect as well. It's kind of cool figuring this stuff out.
I estimate that turning off the A/C is worth 5 MPG before I even turn the key in the ignition.
