According to the EPA, the upcoming Audi A3 TDI will be rated at 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway, with a combined rating of 34 mpg. Those numbers are an exact match for the ratings of the A3’s 2010 Golf and Jetta TDI cousins when those cars are equipped with the 6-speed DSG transmission. The 6-speed dual clutch transmission will be the only transmission available on the A3 TDI, while Audi’s quattro all wheel drive system will not be available.

The A3 TDI uses the familiar VW Group 2.0 common rail diesel engine, producing 140hp and 236lb-ft of torque. The engine provides enough power to move the A3 TDI from 0-0-60mph in under 9 seconds. Emissions reduction is accomplished though EGR, a particulate filter, and exhaust catalysts. The A3 TDI will be the first diesel powered luxury vehicle to meet US EPA emissions regulations without the use of a urea system.

The A3 TDI is expected to carry a base price of under $30,000 and should reach dealers in December. It is expected that the car will qualify for a $1300 federal income tax credit.

Under $30k is good! Not great, obviously, but better by comparison to most of the German diesel offerings. The thing about Audi is that what they call "base" is usually pretty decked-out.

Well, it's an Audi so that makes it a luxury car. Too bad there's no manual.

If I had known that Audi was planning this when I bought my BMW diesel I may well have waited.I love the Bimmer but a lower price, better mileage and a bigger gov't incentive probably would have caused me to go with the A3.
