Elkhart Lake, WI. -- The 26 drivers competing in Round 6 of the SCCA Pro Racing - Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup put in a long day today at Road America with qualifying at 8 am followed by the race at 7 pm.

When the checkered flag flew, the weekend belonged to Timmy Megenbier who led each session. The Melrose Park, Illinois native began Saturday's action by winning his second pole position of the season after suffering a tire puncture early in the session. The race also featured a great deal of action and saw many of the title-contending drivers jockeying for position. Megenbier led all but one lap during the race, relinquishing his lead to eventual fourth-place finisher, Andy Lee for a single lap early on in the race. The podium also included AJ Nealey (2nd) and Joey Atterbury (3rd) who gained seven positions during the race.

The win is Megenbier's series-leading third victory of the season but after the race, series officials penalized him 30 points for blocking Andy Lee on the last lap. Despite this penalty, Megenbier walks away from this weekend with 218 points and a 25-point lead in the Championship battle. Andy Lee (198) and Joey Atterbury (193) rounding out the top three in the standings.

"Today was a really crazy day with my problems during qualifying and all of the action during the race," Megenbier said. "At the start, I got a really good jump and was able to pull away a bit, but then the caution came out and brought them up to me. Andy Lee and I had a great battle after the second caution, and he was able to get around me at one point. Thankfully, I was able to keep my head and get him back just before the final lap. Obviously, I'm disappointed with the penalty decision, but I still have the lead in the Championship and that's what important. I'll try to make up the points I lost today when we get to Mosport."

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series returns to action August 29-30 at Mosport for Round 7 of the season.

Wonder what FE they get for the race;-) I get about 7-8 MPG in my 1.6L Miata at racing speeds.

Hi Jim:

___In the report leading up to the Road America - Elkhart Lake, WI TDI Cup Race (cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24116), VW was claiming 20 to 25 mpg for the RACE! Average speeds for the first three races were running in the mid to high 60’s with a lot of hard braking and acceleration IIRC so 20 + is doing really really well! Road America is a bit longer and faster track so I assume the FE was down in the mid-teens as the average speeds were probably in the high 70-‘s more than likely if not higher?

___Good Luck

I can tell you first hand. When a TDI is pushed it can produce.

To date I have not driven a hybrid or FE miser that can do as much right as a TDI Jetta over all,,, as a drivers car.

To bad its not a yota or Honda,,, and Honda blew there chance at it. :(

Just to add some data points on race fuel mileage from my SCCA road racing experience:

1986 VW Golf GTI (IT preparation), 6-7 mpg
1995 Dodge Neon (SSC prep), 7-8 mpg

These figures are from Sears Point, Laguna Seca, and Thunderhill race tracks in California, for races that didn't have full-course caution flags. The Neon was heavier (2550 lb vs 2250 lb with driver), but had a lower drag body and a more advanced fuel injection system.
