October 9 was the day the world used a year's worth of resources. In other words, it will take 15 months to recover from what the earth used in 2006. Obviously the pace is quickening...
Past Eco Debt Days:
1987 - December 19
1990 - December 7
1995 - November 21
2000 - November 11
2005 - October 11
2006 - October 9Eco Footprints - Years it takes to recover from a year of use:
India - 0.4
China - 0.8
Brazil - 1.2
Russia - 2.4
Germany - 2.5
France - 3.0
UK - 3.1
US - 5.3In other words, for 2006, it will take 5.3 years to recover for the what the US consumed. To put in another way, If the entire world liked like America - 5.3 planets of resources would be consumed in 2006.
I'm aware that some will point out fossils fuels are not renewable, but the trend seems clear.
