Business First of Columbus - 2:26 PM EDT Friday

Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. (http://www.bizjournals.com/search/bin/search?q=%22Honda%20of%20America%20Manufacturing%20Inc%22&t=columbus) said Friday a strike at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (http://columbus.bizjournals.com/columbus/gen/Goodyear_Tire_&_Rubber_Co_56095.html) won't affect the automaker's Central Ohio operations.

The United Steelworkers of America (http://www.bizjournals.com/search/bin/search?q=%22United%20Steelworkers%20of%20America%22&t=columbus) ordered a strike Thursday at Akron-based Goodyear after the union and the company failed to agree on a contract that Goodyear said it needs to survive against foreign competitors.

The strike involves 12,000 employees at the tire maker's 16 U.S. and Canadian plants.

Honda spokesman Ron Lietzke said Goodyear isn't the automaker's largest tire supplier and the strike isn't expected to hurt the manufacturer's operations. Honda makes automobiles, sport utility vehicles and motorcycles for its Honda and Acura badges at four assembly plants in Central Ohio, where more than 13,000 people work.

Meanwhile, Goodyear said it will keep operations going with the help of salaried personnel, inventory and tires from overseas.

Without giving details, the company said its latest offer protected jobs and pensions, but the union, which made contract concessions three years ago, said the proposal would have included two plant closings.

A company spokesman said talks wouldn't resume until Saturday at the earliest.
Goodyear (NYSE:GT) reported $19.7 billion in sales last year.

Marysville-based Honda of America Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Honda Motor Company Ltd. (http://www.bizjournals.com/search/bin/search?q=%22Honda%20Motor%20Company%20Ltd%22&t=columbus) (NYSE:HMC), runs plants in Marysville, Russells Point, Anna and East Liberty, and a research and development center in Raymond.
