A least something is selling for GM --Ed.

"Excitement" is not a word people have associated with General Motors cars in recent years. But the company now has a new model that's actually generating some buzz — the redesigned Camaro.

The sleek, two-door coupe looks like a cross between a '60s muscle car and a spaceship. And even in a terrible economy, dealers have sold more than 15,000 in its first several months on the market.

Living Out Childhood Dreams

Some of Greg Smith's fondest memories were in a Camaro. He recalls being 13 years old, with his friend's older brother at the wheel, barreling across the desert outside Tucson at 100 miles per hour.

"There was nothing like leaving your seat when you go over a little rise. Even though you have your seat belt on, you still get a little air," Smith says. "You kind of feel like you're in another world."

Buying a Camaro was never practical, but Smith, who is now 53 and designs commercial signs for a living, couldn't resist; he ordered a Camaro in February and picked it up last week in Maryland.

It looks cool and I'm sure it's a blast to drive, but come on. :(

According to my printbook, the Camaro V6 weighs 3750 pounds - same as the 2010 Equinox 4cyl FWD (that gets 32mpg) and only 300 more than a Malibu (that gets 33mpg). Dropping in the 2.4L DI Ecotec would probably knock off another 100 pounds or more out of the Camaro.

After the newness wears off, they should release a "Midlife Crisis" edition, with the Ecotec and tall gearing for EPA numbers as good as the current Equinox/Malibu. Fuel economy is definitely not what the Camaro is all about, but since they are selling them almost exclusively to "50-something year old" executives, why stuff all that power under the hood when it will be used only to drive to the office?

I like the Camaro styling but would not consider it at all without the 4cyl. Even with the V6, it would irk me to have to throw the book at it just to get to 40mpg when all my other cars can hit that without trying too hard.

Americans have never been into economy cars. Toyota only sold 8660 Priuses in March, so Chevy may well have sold as many gas guzzling Camaros this Spring - and made a better profit on every one.

That's darn near 700 lbs over my Contour SVT w/a V6 - and I thought it is an FSP!!!

The car is a coupe version of the Holden Commodore. Which is the Pontiac G8 here. It was simple as heck for GM to bring Camaro to the USA.

And yes it is a blast to drive. But IMHO its not as hard core as the G8 GXP. Which is very close the the Commodore over all. I saw a new G8 GXP here for sale at the rock bottom price of $25k. Thats over $10k off MSRP. Hell of a weekend warrior for that kind of money.

Pontiac was even thinking of bringing the Ute G8 as they call them down under. And call it El Camino. Ute's are very popular in Auzzy. http://jalopnik.com/366699/2010-pontiac-g8-sport-truck-the-el-camino-is-back

Google Holden if your interested in what GM is doing down under.
