BMW Motorrad Days 2009 parade.

Munich, Germany -- Once a year, the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a Mecca for BMW motorcycle riders and enthusiasts from around the world hosts the three days of Motorrad.

This year, more than 30,000 visitors, enthusiasts and riders from more than 30 nations found there way to this picturesque town at the foot of the mountain to enjoy the world's largest BMW Motorcycle Party. The longest distance traveled to the event was a group of 8-riders who rode all the way from Beijing, China!

From logistical point of view, BMW Motorrad Days 2009 was quite the undertaking. More than 700 individuals were employed for preparation of the event. Apart from guests who booked rooms in and around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, approximately 1,420 additional overnight accommodations were provided in addition to more than 1,400 tent camping enthusiasts who were located in the camping area adjacent to the venue.

This year’s focus was on the Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport and the racing version of the all-new BMW S 1000 RR.

In addition to the BMW S 1000 RR highlight, the freestyle area was an active venue as Chris Pfeiffer, indoor street motorcycle freestyle world champion, showed his riding skills to the crowd.

With breathtaking stunts by the world's best motorcycle acrobat, Chris on a BMW F 800 R performed riding skill the bordered on the impossible. The four Stunt Riding World and European Champion and four times winner at the Erzberg Rodeo truly captivated the crowd.

On the Enduro trail x-track, Enduro riders Gerhard Forster, Andreas Latvians Bichler, Juha Salminen, Simo Kirssi and Bernd went toe to toe on BMW G 450 X’s.

No less exciting was the action of two mountain bikers Igor Obu and Andreas Schuster. Obu made a name for himself ten years ago when he rode his mountain bike down the Olympic Ski Jump in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and flew 42.11 meters at 70 mph before landing safely. Schuster left attendees breathless with a jump from ramp to ramp clearing over 22 feet.

In addition, two motorcycle adventurers, Michael Martin and Doris Wiedemann gave a presentation on their "long-haul Sprechstunde." In their latest project "Desert Planet", both described how they had ridden BMW’s F 800 GS’ from the southernmost point in Key West in Florida to the icy Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean.

For the less adventurous, five experienced BMW and Husqvarna bike instructors were on hand the entire weekend offering free rider training for those in attendance.

Those who prefer asphalt were offered test rides of BMW models representing the entire range of bikes on a road course encompassing the picturesque area in and around Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Numerous live musical acts took center stage at this years Motorrad 2009 including the party band "Blechblos'n" on Friday evening and "Gary and Gerry and the used underwear" on Saturday evening. The Austrian band "Tricycle" and “Switha's Band" provided the finest in alternative rock direct from Portugal.

Finally, two lucky attendees won individual BMW F 800 R and F 800 GS’ as part of a raffle held on Friday and Saturday evening.

By all appearances, it looked like fun, sounded like fun and we can only wish we were there in person :)

I had to translate much of the descriptions of the event from German so do not judge me for being less than 100% accurate ;)

There are quite a few BMW bike rallies in North America:

Wayne, we'll see some fellow BMW riders on our jaunt. You'll find them to be friendly, touring-oriented riders who enjoy road trips. Rallies are a good excuse for a trip somewhere, and usually involve camping at the rally site.

What could be better than packing up the bike, riding to a rally site, camping with fellow riders, and getting away from it all?
