2010 Toyota Prius-III - $22,000 to start and 50 mpgUS combined on the 08 EPA.
June saw fuel efficient hybrid and non-hybrid sales off 39 percent from the same period a year ago and this time, well below that of the overall marketplace that was off 27.7 percent.
The 2010 Toyota Prius’ debut in June came with plenty of fanfare. From excellent reviews to entertaining commercials, the Prius’ many months of sales decline ended with a 6% uptick while sales of most models from every manufacturer shoed steep declines.
Loaded with innovation and featuring more than 1,000 patents, the 2010 Toyota Prius arrived at US Toyota Dealers with an equally impressive price tag: starting at just $22,000, the next-generation Prius costs less than its 2009 model predecessor.
Featuring Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive and an innovative complement of intuitive technology and standard equipment, the 2010 Toyota Prius delivers value without equal.
More performance thanks to a Hybrid Synergy Drive that is 90 per cent newly-developed.
Less money at the pump, thanks to improved fuel consumption at an estimated 50 mpgUS combined.
More innovation, in the form of more than 1,000 patents covering everything from essential performance and safety systems to available comfort and convenience features.
Less resistance, thanks to an aerodynamic body design that delivers Toyota’s best coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.25, thereby improving fuel efficiency and reducing road noise.
More versatility, thanks to the ample and flexible hatchback design and improvements to boost winter performance.
More comfort, from additional rear-seat legroom to Toyota’s first available solar-powered ventilation system that pre-cools the Prius cabin in summer.
Less footprint, thanks to the new Prius’ ability to operate in electric-only mode, improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and the use of environmentally-responsible manufacturing methods and materials, such as plant-derived, carbon neutral plastics and available LED headlights.
More safety with a full suite of vehicle control systems, active headrests and seven airbags as standard equipment.
“Back in the 80’s, Toyota was defined by the Corolla... In the 90’s, it was the Camry... Now, Toyota is defined by the Prius,” said Bob Carter, Toyota’s Group VP and GM of Toyota Motor Sales. “That is how important this car is to us.”
Fuel Efficient Non-Hybrids
The “Big 7” fuel efficient non-hybrids sales saw an overall decline of 38.5 percent YTD vs. 2008. Different this month however was the decline was worse than the overall automobile markets. Of course these models are coming up against an unusually strong backdrop of June 2008 sales when gasoline was approaching $4.00 per gallon and in many cases, you could not find these fuel misers on the lot no matter how much you were willing to pay.
The back and forth battle for compact class sales supremacy between the Corolla and Civic continues. Two months ago, it was the Civic. Last month, the Corolla and this month, the Civic again pulls to the top of the class.
For June, the Civic saw 20,654 vehicles sold, a decrease of 49.7 percent compared to June of 2008. For the year, Civic sales are off 41.8 percent and still heading south with each months conclusion.
Corolla’s June sales saw 19,935 vehicles sold. A decline of 54.6 percent vs. June of 2008. YTD, Corolla sales are off 37.0 percent.
In June, the Toyota Yaris saw 5,243 units sold, a 40.6 percent decline vs. the June of 2008. For the year, sales are off 39.9 percent.
For now the fourth month in a row, the Honda Fit sales were off 46.4 percent in June with a total of 5,585 vehicles sold. For the year, sales are off 24.8 percent.
For the sixth month in a row, Mini’s sales have fallen yet again. 4,105vehicles were sold, down 21.2 percent from to the same period a year ago. For the year, sales are off 20.9 percent.
Sales of the Chevrolet Aveo have been decimated with no recovery in sight. This month saw sales of the Aveo at 2,217 vehicles in June, down 50.9 percent vs. June of 2008. For the year, Aveo sales are off 61.0 percent.
The Smart Fortwo sales are all but insignificant here in the US. Used mainly as an offset so Mercedes can continue to sell FSP’s without gas guzzling taxes applied, the Fortwo saw 1,116 new owners in June, down 56.2 percent compared to June of 2008.

Hybrid’s
The “Big 6” fuel efficient non-hybrids sales (not including the FFH/MMH or Insight-II) saw an overall decline of 41.7 percent in 2009 YTD vs. 2008. Besides the all-new Prius and Fusion Hybrid, no other hybrid escaped the sales decline as all manufacturers experienced the free fall in total sales.
The Toyota Prius posted June sales of 12,998, a surprising increase of 6.1 percent vs. the June 2008 sales period. For the year, sales are off by 38.6 percent. Now that the new 2010 Prius-III is available, it will be interesting to see if its uptake accelerates or stagnates in the very weak economy.
The Toyota Camry Hybrid saw sales of 2,093 vehicles in June, down 34.2 percent from the same period a year ago. 09 YTD, total sales are off 57.1 percent. For the second month in a row, TCH’s have been purchased for as little as $22,750 which makes it an attractive proposition for those not interested the Fusion Hybrid but still want a fuel efficient mid-sized sedan.
The Honda Civic Hybrid posted total sales of 1,583 vehicles, down 43.9 percent vs. June of 2008. For the year to date, sales are off 34.8 percent. Let us hope the Honda powers that be apply the April incentive package to bring a brand new 2009 HCH-II back down to $18,500.
The Honda Insight-II reported sales of 2,079 vehicles for the month. It appears its launch momentum has now been broken as sales decreased sharply form last months 2,780 units. The 2010 Insight-II can be found for a few hundred $’s over invoice around the country.
The Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids individual sales included 1,405 vehicles, down 29.5 percent from the same period a year ago. For 2009 YTD, total sales are off 30.5 percent.
The HiHy saw just 1,069 vehicles sold in June, down 30.2 percent from the same period a year ago. For 2009 YTD, total sales are off 51 percent.
The 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrid reported sales of 2,244 vehicles combined for the month. Sales are still increasing with an approximately 10% increase over last months numbers. Let us hope the trend continues.
The all-new Lexus RX 400h hybrid took a huge hit with just 527 vehicles sold in June, down 62.0 percent from the same period a year ago. For 2009 YTD, total sales are off 35.4 percent.
Sales of GM’s hybrids saw a total of 1,454 hybrid vehicles including the Chevrolet Malibu, Tahoe and Silverado, GMC Yukon and Sierra, Cadillac Escalade, Saturn Aura and Vue Hybrids delivered in the month of June. YTD, GM has sold 8,349 hybrids.
