Additional Efficient Dynamics optimizations include cleaner aerodynamics, low rolling resistance tires, lightweight engineering, taller final drive, optimized warm-up behavior and ancillary units operating and controlled on demand such as the electrical fuel pump and the detachable A/C compressor. The rear-wheel drive X1 sDrive18d achieves an astounding for a small cross-over, 45.2 mpgUS combined on the NEDC (approximately 37 mpgUS combined) while still offering BMW’s best in class ride and handling experience.

Interior

The interior, in turn, is finished in natural colors. As an alternative to the seat upholstery finished as standard in Elektra cloth, there is also Median cloth in sporting striped design as well as Nevada leather. Then the customer also has the choice of no less than seven trim colors and five variants of trim bars.

The optional Cool Elegance Design Package incorporates sports seats in Oyster-colored leather upholstery and black/yellow piping on the backrest as well as trim bars in Bright Wave wood. With it, the lower section of the instrument panel and the centre console likewise come in Oyster.

A further amenity is the separate storage compartment beneath the floor of the luggage compartment as such.

Safety

DSC Dynamic Stability Control in the BMW X1 comprises not only the ABS anti-lock brake function, Dynamic Brake Control and CBC Cornering Brake Control, but also DTC Dynamic Traction Control. This latter function raises the stability control thresholds to a higher level, making it easier for the driver to set off on snow and sand with the wheels allowed to spin slightly.

On the BMW X1 xDrive28i DSC comes additionally with Dry Braking in the wet, Fading Compensation and a Start-Off Assistant.

The torsionally rigid body shell of the BMW X1 is based on BMW’s intelligent technology using high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel wherever appropriate. The choice of materials and the arrangement and geometry of the various support bars, load-bearing elements and reinforcements serve from the start to ensure maximum safety in a collision together with minimum weight and the highest possible standard of agility. Forces acting on the body shell in the event of an accident are diverted through the engine supports and the suspension along several load paths in order to avoid extreme loads acting on individual structural elements and a possible impairment of the stable passenger cell.

Within the BMW X1, front, side and side curtain airbags, three-point inertia-reel seat belts all round, belt force limiters, belt latch tensioners at the front and ISOFIX child seat fastenings on the rear seats are standard.

Halogen DRL’s are standard with optional Bi-xenon headlights including positioning and DRL’s combined with LED light conductors on the rear lights available.

Apart from a High-Beam Assistant and a rain sensor, the BMW X1 is also available with Adaptive Headlights illuminating the road ahead in the appropriate angle, following the steering wheel. 2011 BMW X1 – Crossover.

Conclusions?

If BMW cannot sell enough MINI’s to make up for BMW's inability to meet the upcoming manufacturers' CAFÉ standards on its own, you can bet the return of the 4-cylinder is imminent and in doing so, the super diesel will surely appear on our shores.

Hmmm, too bad GM didn't get smart more quickly. A 250 lb ft 160 hp motor could drive all their 1/2 ton pickups and the 5000 lb SUVs/minivans etc.
The pitiful diesel GM offered in 1/2 ton Suburbans and pickups in the 80's was known to get an honest 23-25 mpg highway It wasn't turbocharged; its specs were roughly 150 hp and about 250 lb-ft- just like these motors.

Very large SUVs are dead(new sales)-strictly for the very affluent, but pickups and vans will be around a long time. A 4 cyl TD would be perfect for them.

I hope they bring this to the US with a 2l Diesel, AWD and manual gearbox. I would be interested for sure.
