Japan Sept new vehicle
sales down 7.4 pct

TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Domestic sales of new cars, trucks and buses, excluding mini-vehicles, fell by 7.4 pct year-on-year last month to 362,810 vehicles, declining for the 15th straight month, because of rising prices of gasoline, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) said.
Car sales last month were down 8.9 pct at 300,359, sales of buses rose 15.3 pct to 1,669 and truck sales increased 0.3 pct to 60,782, the association said.
Separately, the Japan Mini-vehicle Association reported that mini-vehicle sales last month, at 184,156, were 5.0 pct higher than a year earlier, increasing for the ninth consecutive month.
Sales of six of Japan's 12 auto makers fell last month.
Toyota Motor Corp's sales of standard-size cars fell by 6.7 pct to 142,084, Nissan Motor Co's by 13.6 pct to 66,434, Honda Motor Co's by 11.5 pct to 45,653, Mitsubishi Motor Corp's by 11.7 pct to 7,180, Mazda Motor Corp's by 12.9 pct to 22,112 and sales by Fuji Heavy Industries, which makes Subarus, were down 21.7 pct at 10,179.
Among truck makers, Isuzu Motors sales increased by 13.5 pct to 12,912 vehilces, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp's by 20.2 pct to 7,993 and Nissan Diesel Motor Co's by 9.1 pct to 3,504, while sales by Hino Motors, a Toyota subsidiary, were unchanged at 7,315.
Among makers of mini-vehicles, Suzuki Motor Corp's sales fell 9.6 pct to 348,524 vehicles, while sales by Daihatsu Motor Co, another Toyota unit, rose 8.4 pct to 52,097.
For the fiscal first half ended last month, domestic sales of new vehicles fell 7.5 pct year-on-year to 1.74 mln, the JAMA said.
Car sales in the fiscal first half were down 9.6 pct at 1.44 mln and sales of buses declined 1.3 pct to 8,116, while truck sales increased 5.1 pct to 286,942, the JAMA said.
The Japan Mini-vehicle Association reported that in the fiscal first half sales of mini-vehicles rose 4.9 pct year-on-year to 961,721.
