In the insight-II there are so many gauges like realtime fuel efficiency (mpg), EV-assist and Regen.

I was wondering, is it worth to mount a Scangauge II display, if you only want the best fuel efficiency by applying the advanced hypermiling techniques?

xcel and others like to daisy chain 2 SGII's. Many things are not shown or are only shown roughly on the gauges provided. Engine temp, engine lod, tps ...

do these gauges you mention like engine temp necessary for fuel efficiency purposes?

TPS for me at least is crucial.

Engine temp, if you have a grill block, it becomes real helpful in finding what temp gives you the most efficiency. My ecu uses coolant temp and the warmer it is the better it is up to a certain point.

You can do fine without SGII. You can do better with it. To squeeze every ounce, some use 2 units. You can move SG from car to car. It will read and clear error codes.

To me it is worth it. Payback from fuel savings can be reasonable.

Until cars give all info digitally from the OBDII interface, some of the advanced techniques and even fairly basic techniques require more info.

For the new Insight it can be helpful because it will let you track ignition timing and also exact water temperature -- both of which are important components of several fuel economy saving modes in the vehicle.

If you read up on how it is useful in the HCH-II, you'll see the ways that it is useful in your new car.

A scangauge is always a good thing to have, not only for the extra information it provides but also because it may help retrieve to odd DTC code should you ever need to do it at a later time.

The instrumentation on your Insight is nothing short of awesome and you are even provided with a great engine coolant indicator, which is something many of us wish we had. ;)
However, the indicator does not tell you how cold the engine is and how long you have to wait until your hybrid functions become available. The scangauge in the other hand gives you the means to determine that and a lot more quite easily.

Now i understand about the engine temp (especially in winter time) and error codes.

In one of the advanced hypermiling techniques articles http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14295 two other indicators were also mentioned

IGN - Keep IGN between 30 and 36
LOD - Monitor LOD values between 40-60


Are above indicators necessary for the technique mentioned or the indicators that tarabell mentioned in her article (iFCD, EV-assist, Regen) are good enough as well?

Sadly, the IGN and LOD combination no longer holds value for the Insight II since it does not have the third stage I-VTEC of the HCH-II.

However, In your case I would give prefernce to the ScanGauge's air intake temperature, coolant temp gauge, 12V gauge, instantaneous MPG, and even perhaps the LOD and TPS.

Since the Insight II still has a few unique attributes, we are working on an FAQ and a techniques guide which will hopefully be relased very soon. :)
