I love theological/philsophical questions like this. :D --Ed.

Reporting from Beijing -- Would Confucius drive a Hummer?

News that an obscure Chinese company has reached a tentative agreement to buy bankrupt General Motors' Hummer unit has people here pondering the larger meaning of Chinese ownership of the mother of all gas guzzlers.

The news has propelled Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. onto the radar screen of auto enthusiasts worldwide. And it underscores China's growing economic might at a time when U.S. industrial prowess is flagging.

China is already the U.S. government's largest creditor and the largest foreign provider of manufactured goods to the U.S. Now a Chinese firm is the first to salvage a piece of a fallen U.S. titan -- a point of no small pride for many in China.

The new owners are planning to push sales of the gargantuan vehicle here, where it is already a status symbol for China's newly rich.... http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-china-hummer4-2009jun04,0,2408812.story

Hmmmm.... I must not be a man after all. I've been livin' a dream all these years.

I don't get the Hummer. Who the heck can see it as a powerful vehicle? I see it as a large slow piece of crap.

Guys that brag about how much crap they can tow are boring. Speed is what you're supposed to brag about. Give me a vette.

I do not think this Purchase is about the hummer at all.
This is about the Company getting the INFORMATION regarding it.
Startup car company now with access to complete "Auto" and Manufacturing facility?
THey could ditch the actual Hummer and start building WHAT EVER in there.

I would bet that within 2 years - HUMMER itsself is gone and something much more marketable is coming out of the Gates.

Although - as China is expanding so fast - they could replace "Big Rigs" with Hummers as the dominate "work horse" for there growth... actually USE the towing ability

and - at the risk of sounding like a @$$ - they could probably fit 20 + people in there ( they ARE massive inside...

The timing of the sale of the civilian Hummers to China was ironic and just could not pass on it. BTW, HUMVEEs were not part of the sale.

I have not read all the Analects, but I suppose that Kong Fuzi would want farmers (or anyone) to use the most efficient vehicle for their needs. As far as urban bling, that is an easy "no".

If the photoshop gets CleanMPG on the wrong side of the Great Firewall, I'll let you know :)

The Chinese government may decide to reject the sale of Hummer on environmental grounds

The National Development and Reform Commission also is likely to say the Chinese buyer, a maker of construction machinery, lacks the expertise to run Hummer, China National Radio said late Thursday. It cited no source for the information.
