2009 Audi A3 wagon and hatch with a hybridized 1.6L TDI - $33,450 to start and 57 mpgUS combined on the NEDC.

Audi is currently launching its latest A3 and it includes a Start/Stop with regenerative braking hybrid system. With a fuel economy rating of 57 mpgUS combined on the NEDC, the A3 w/ its brand new 105 HP 1.6L TDI can reach 60 in less than 11 seconds and includes a top speed of 121 mph.

The standard start/stop system is especially effective during city driving. As soon as the vehicle comes to a stop, the shift lever is in neutral, and the driver removes their foot from the clutch pedal, the system turns the engine off. The engine then turns back on as soon as the clutch pedal is depressed.

Fuel savings begin before the A3 even shuts down at traffic lights. Aided by the alternator based energy-recovery system, kinetic energy is converted to usable electrical energy during a vehicle’s coasting and braking phases temporarily storing it in the battery. The vehicle's battery supplies this stored energy to electrical components reducing alternator load yielding a fuel savings of up to 3%.
